Has anyone thought that Freddie might still not be 100% fit ?

When he came on vs Gills his knee was heavily strapped -- perhaps PS wants to rest him as much as possible.

Just a thought.

I reckon he'll feature in the JPT game on Tuesday, as has been pointed out before PS covered this subject at the Pie and a Pint night so all the conspiracy theorists can think again.

As Ken says (and I said the other day), during the Gills game, his knee was heavily strapped so he's clearly NOT fit enough to play for any length of time, and if we can keep Corr on our books, not playing for a year, then I think Fred deserves to have a bit of slack cut.

PS please come clean about Eastwood. Get the doubters back on your side and a few words about the situation might cure the split.

Why would/should Sturrock reveal anything about the subtleties of the situation surrounding Eastwood? How impressed would you be if, in the circumstance that you weren't performing as expected in your job, your line manager revealed in a public note to stockholders the reasons why he thought you weren't fit to fulfill your role?

I can see the thinking behind opting for Benyon instead of Eastwood yesterday. Freddy has always been more effective outside of the box, whereas I'd imagine Benyon has scored most of his goals inside and has certainly been previously billed as a "Fox in the Box". With Tomlin still on the pitch, a player who works the channels and genuinely performs in and around the area, replacing Corr with Eastwood would have removed our threat inside the 18-yard box. Brentford can then push up a little higher, squeezing the midfield and forcing more pressure onto us. We can debate Benyon's ability - I personally think a move away would suit both parties - but that won't change the type of player Eastwood is and how his introduction may not have helped us in that particular scenario yesterday.

Freds first touch is still sublime as ever. Whenever he's been put on for his standard 7 minute cameo he does does something simple but breathtaking like lay a ball off or trap and pass in the same movement.

Unfortunately he isn't featuring in PS's plans so I don't think he'll have any sort of impact again on a game in a Southend shirt.

How can anyone say he is not the same player when he gets a ten minute cameo at best every other game. Tomlin was **** at the start of the season and was given ten games odd to find his form. Freddy has not been given a look in. He comes on and shows control and vision and yet he doesnt ever get a look in. Yesterday was the ultimate insult to a Southend legend.

Tomlin was never ****. His movement and skill were always brilliant, creating and making space, it just took him time to score goals.

We can speculate for ever but until something official comes from the manager/club no-one knows the full facts, so why the big fuss ?

The 'ultimate insult' would be to play him in place of someone else when he's clearly not good enough. It would be embarrassing, and it would reflect very badly on Sturrock. To compare him with Tomlin, who showed all kinds of qualities even when he wasn't scoring, is absurd.

Agreed, the injury thing doesn't not cut it with me.. if your on the bench your fit enough to play, if not leave him in the stands.
Fred is like southend silverware, you wouldn't keep a trophy in a knackered old cupboard you would treat it with respect.
Freddy has done it for us before, has Benyon?
If PS doesn't get us promotion this year I think that would be his lot, will we remember PS then?, Fred is a bit of Southend's Gloriest past he is leaving to rot, a lot of us remember that time with fondness, so seeing him not get a look in ****'s some of us off.

COS THEY LOVEEEEEE IT!

The reason Eastwood hasn't been playing is because Tomlin and Britt have been unplayable for defenders.

He'll get his chance. He's clearly not 100% fit. We all know what he can do so does Sturrock. Let's chill!

With no disrespect intended, it hardly matters that it doesn't cut it with you. The manager picks the team and you asked him to 'come clean' with the fans. He's already come clean with the fans - so if you're not going to accept his answers, stop asking the questions.

Given that PS is ultimately going to be judged on results, he's hardly going to leave Eastwood on the bench if he thought he was going to be the best chance of getting them. I don't even come close to the negativity that some people feel about Eastwood right now, but I for one am glad that the manager is picking his teams based on what he knows about their capabilities NOW rather than many years ago. If he was the best choice, Sturrock would be playing him. Why wouldn't he?

It's frustrating cos we ALL want to see a fit Eastwood smashing them in, but if the manager doesn't think he's worthy of a place right now, that's good enough for me. He's in a far better position to judge.

Yesterday was a great game to watch, but one thing is causing a bit of a split among blues supporters... the treatment of Eastwood.
For me yesterday it was a disgrace to see Benyon get on before Fred, who next if front of him for striker "Bentley", nothing against Benyon, but UNLESS Eastwood was injured he should not be getting on before him if we needed a goal.
Freddy is a Southend Legend, his goals, his transfer money, success when he was part of the team.... so while he is here he needs to be treated well... PS you have not got us promoted yet so not sure we hold you in the same manner we do Freddy.
PS please come clean about Eastwood. Get the doubters back on your side and a few words about the situation might cure the split.
If Eastwood gave Southend as much respect as you do Eastwood maybe he would be playing

People complaining about the lack of goals seem to forget he's played very few. Hard to make an impact in a few 10 minute appearances.

So from Corr to Smith and back to Eastwood...much gossip, theory and drivel, and most of it no doubt completely at odds with reality, but I guess that the point of the zone (if we restricted ourselves to what we actually knew something aboiut there would be one post a week).

Freddy has injury and fitness problems. The former are exasperating the latter because it preventing hom training properly. On both New Years Day and yesterday he needed a fitness test just to make the bench. Far from PS having no faith, the fact that he is still relentlesly putting on the bench despite all the problems is precisely because he sees the underlying quality and that he can change a game.

He could have put him on yesterday- but playing him with an injury would probably have ruled him out for Tues and maybe longer still. Let's see what happens Tues.

I think we forget that like Corr, Freddy missed all of last season starting just one game, and had a knee op that meant he, unlike Corr, missed pre-season. Ongoing niggles and issues are not uncommon against this background- but not being able to train fully on top of all this then the situation really is not surprising (or rather the surprise would be if we were surprised).

The job the club has done with BBBC's fitness issues has been excellent, they have to be trusted to handle Freddy correctly too. A fit Eastwood is in my view absolutely still Championship class.

Yes I agree with this and think this what PS will do

Any striker can 'put them self about'. Stick me on the pitch and I'd run around a lot. Fred is far more likely to create or score a goal than a player who has scored 4 goals since Jan 2011. Even on tues vs the gills he created a gilt edged chance for corr.

Seems Luggy doesn't want Fred or Benyon so should get rid of both if that's the case because both will be on a decent wage I imagine.

I don't have stats on assists, but they've actually got identical goalscoring records from open play in the league over that time frame.

People complaining about the lack of goals seem to forget he's played very few. Hard to make an impact in a few 10 minute appearances.

Is this about Benyon or Eastwood?

Eastwood 9 (12 sub) appearances in the league plus 2 (+4 sub) appearances in the cup.

Benyon 10 (10 sub) appearances in the league plus 2 (+4 sub) appearances in the cup.

Did anyone see Eastwood warming up at any time during yesterday's match ?

Perhaps PS didn't want to risk him ?

As already stated yesterday, Eastwood is prone yo ding his own thing and against a higher division team like Brentford, discipline and shapes is needed and Eastwood does not have this.

I have not seen anything of Eastwood so far this season to prove that he brings anything to the game either.

What Benyon did was put himself about, he harried the Brentford defence and tried to force them into an error.

*yawn*

Benyon is pony, and a waste of wages\space. Needs to be shipped out asap. Yesterdays game was completely suited to a Freddy winner.

Benyon brings sod all to the game. He will leave this club a nobody who achieved nothing and will be forgotten within months.
