Promotion and relegation 2019/20 season

Could the two seasons be merged? 2019/20 merges with 2020/21 to form one giant season of 92 games? The 2019/21 season. That way you still gain from the position you’re in if you’re at the top, and are rightly disadvantaged if you’re currently at the bottom.

So rather than our misery lasting just 9 more games we make it 55 games instead...Most would rather have a dose of corona.

I can envisage a scenario where we get it just about back to 'normality' just for Qatar World Cup to kick off in November 2022 and ruin it all again. I'm as opposed to a World Cup being at that time of the year as the next person but that may end up being factored in soon.
I still don't see the elite leagues in Europe playing a World Cup mid-season so the 21/22 season to run from December 2021 to September 2022 factor in the June 2021 Euros and various other continents own competitions so actually need to allow for that for the season prior too as well.
Making my head spin, something has to give.
I can see there being no domestic cup competitions next year for one thing....
Only upside to all this is the Checkatrade becomes no more... ?

I'd have to agree with Westcliff. If you start from a position of minimising cases of discontent with the chosen solution then you have to find a way of keeping the biggest losers in that scenario happy.

In my view that's:
  • Liverpool (deserved Champions)
  • Man City and Leicester (almost certainly Champions League qualifiers)
  • Aston Villa (could reasonably win their game in hand and escape relegation)
  • Leeds, West Brom (fairly good bets for automatic promotion)
  • Charlton (they'd believe they have a good chance of escaping relegation)
  • Coventry (7 points clear and a game in hand make them almost certain of promotion
  • possibly the current top 3 in League 2 (not quite so clear here).
Stop the season as it is now with no relegations and a revamped 20-21 season and you reduce the risk of litigtion and long-running discontent to a minimum. You can mitigate that further by giving all EFL clubs some of that lovely Premier League cash.

Oh, and completely undeservedly, we get to stay in League One :)
I said ages ago, I do think the only way this can be resolved without massive legal proceedings is to void the season and start again. I however don't think it will be next season. There is precedent for this... it happened during WWII, albeit after only a few games.

The 20/21 season I don't think will start either... perhaps run next season as a series of small tournaments and friendlies - as they did in the war years - and start again properly in 2021/22 with the same clubs in the same leagues they are currently in. Euro competitions have the same entrants as they did this year.

It's not ideal, but there is enough money in football for it to support itself - what's needed is a huge reality check by the Premiership and for them to support the lower league structure, otherwise there is a real likelihood that they will be no pyramid system left.

The best option would be to scrap that nonsense in Qatar along with FIFA. Then dish out some long sentences for Blatter and Platini.... to be served in a Qatar jail. Then have the Euros in 2022 instead. followed by a proper WC in 2024, here in Britain of course. All run by a new organisation who have football rather than their own personal gain as the main focus.

With all the money we would not just save but also create by the switch.....£1M per game for teams for just playing in the Checkatrade.......What fair person amongst you could argue against that.

I think this would be radical. However, certainly the fairest way to adjust to the current situation and create an equal opportunity for all clubs in their current position. It would also generate an extra unique challenge for lots of clubs like ours, Could we get out of being relegated ? If so, at least it would be deserved by our performances on the pitch. I think the greater issue is when can the paying public get to attend games again ?

I know we are almost all resigned to relegation should the season finish with current positions confirmed but just think, how would AFC Wimbledon or Rochdale fans feel if the season is completed behind closed doors with half fit and injury prone players and they are overtaken by us, or much more likely Tranmere and slip into the relegation places with no input from the fans?

There is no easy answer to this disaster season I'm afraid. The more I look at it the more I think that voiding it would be the best thing to do.

Until we know when we can start it's all hypothetical, deadlines have already come and gone. I've got flights I need to rebook for the Euros and the fact they haven't announced the individual dates for that yet makes me think that there's not even much certainty there either.

No,the teams who have performed extremely well deserve promotion—the more I read all the equivocation, the more my original introduction for this thread makes absolute good sense.

You’d be wrong ,though,Stuart. WBA’s promotion, like that of Leeds and all the others whose performances have earned them one of the top positions, is entirely coincidental to what clearly seems to be the obvious and fairest solution.
And wrong again,WBA are not my favourites—-Southend United are ! Like for so many other fans, they are my 2nd team. Their widespread popularity amongst football followers stems from the fact that they’ve always been a well-run club who have tried ,except under Pulis (despite some success ,hated by their fans), to play attractive football.

Megson?

It’s simple, top 2 in each division go up automatically, no relegation at all, top 3 from league 2 go up, top of conference (Barrow) go up to replace Bury FC. For 2020/21, change to bottom 6 to go down in each division, leaving just bottom 2 to go down from League 2, it’s make sense.

Michael Gove reckons that pubs could have to stay shut until Christmas, I can't see them starting a new football season before then if that's the case.

Playing behind closed doors makes no sense at all because of the risks involved to the players and the support staff along with any medical support needed.

At the end of the day football is just a game, perhaps this season should end like the average game of monopoly, with an upturned board, tantrums and no-one talking to each other for a few hours

I fear that’s how it will end

Gary Megson, yes indeed! Thank you ! Two exciting promotions with glorious football— no-one should forget class acts like genius Jason Koumas laying on countless goals for the likes of super Bob Taylor,Jason Roberts(Cyrille’s nephew) and goal-machine Lee Hughes.

There appears to be an important meeting of League Two clubs tomorrow, with an increasing number apparently coming to the conclusion that it would be best to end the season now and there's a possibility that this could be put to a vote. This would clearly have implications for League One and Andy Holt, the owner of Accrington is also pushing for that outcome, claiming that it would be financially crippling to attempt to finish this season's fixtures behind closed doors.

Cancel the season now. No ups or downs! I am selfish and want a get out of jail card thanks. I like what Sol has done for us under the incredible situations that he has had to cope with. I have every confidence we would not be in the same position next season. UTB forever. Onwards and Upwards. xxx

Hmm, Barrow are 4 pts ahead of in form Harrogate and have to play at Wetherby Road, so they lose, just a point behind, not that clear really is it?

It is being muted that smaller local leagues are an option again to ease travel.
Larger play offs?
Live TV streaming to the away team''s big screen ground to ease travel yet get more income? And small away area in grounds so crowd can disperse wider, and less policing.

Don't really like the idea of a simple play-off deciding the promotion issue. Off the top of my head what about 4 regional leagues with the top four, at the end of the season, qualifying for something like the 'top 14' in rugby union here. These would be drawn into four national leagues with a home and away match. Rather like the Champions League the top two of each league would then enter a knock out phase. I presume we would finish with a final with both sides assured of promotion............but only one could be League Champion. Maybe a little 'rough around the edges but could something like that work???
