Good question.

Personally, I'd love Chris Powell and maybe Adam Barrett to pair up, with Tilly as an advisor. I think they'd play attractive football and know the club, the supporters and the expectations/budgets.

I'm not one for big name managers. Peter Taylor, for example, didn't really work for us and the jury is still out on PB for me.

Kenny Jackett does have a decent CV, but I'd take a Danny Cowley first, over him. Young and seems to be successful wherever he has gone.

A hungry younger manager would be my preference, with some good advisors around him.

The club have Clarky and Dave Crown around on matchdays, so they would be handy for advice, if asked.

I loved Chris Powell as a player but I'm yet to be convinced as a manager. It's a small sample size but the only realty successful season was the promotion season with Charlton, the others were disappointing or average. I'd love it if Barrett became a successful manager but it would be one hell of a risk, I know you are only suggesting him as an assistant but that is something I am weary of too. A manager should pick his own assistant as someone they know they can work with and shares their footballing ethos. Pairing people together just because they are both good clubmen isn't the way forward.

Agree with Big Names to a certain extent, not many make their way back after falling out of the top leagues.

I'd be happy with Cowley, he seems to be very driven with a clear plan that he implements to great effect so far. Again it is a small sample size but it is one without any blots yet. I think a young up and coming manager would be my choice too if we could get the right guy, but it would have to be the right guy. Other than Cowley I can't really think of a stand out candidate?

Agreed, but any manager is a risk of sorts.

Most have an up and down career, at best and some are chequered and more.

In the main, Powelly has a decent record. Cowley the stand out.

Problem with football is that it's a merry-go-round of hopping around clubs. Sometimes it works for a manager and sometimes it doesn't.

Adkins is a good example and one touted on here.

It's a gamble, whoever gets the job, hence my thinking that someone who knows our set-up and could connect with the club, fans and players is at least half a shoo-in.

Mark Cooper would be a decent shout. Led Swindon to the L1 play offs in 14-15 and now leading the national league with Forest Green,

If we are going route of someone new ... for me , Dean Austin ! I've read such great things about him ...

Jackett or Cotterill or Adkins would be my top 3 choice and they know League 1 inside and out, not many jobs is available & managering Southend Utd always an attractive option for any manager who is willing to drop down a division as any success would see crowds rise easily, much more potential than most of clubs at this level.
The other two ok ..but he'll no to Adkins he hates Southend if he got job I wouldn't go to games 100% .

If Brown was sacked would Justin Edinburgh be a suitable candidate/replacement??

Before anyone thinks this is an "Anti-Brown" thread it is not. I am one of the many that still thinks that our season will turn around and the early season form will not continue for much longer.

However, I have seen on many other threads the name of Kenny Jackett being mentioned as a suitable replacement if PB was to go and many suggest that Chris Powell as an ex Blue is the ideal candidate.

I am hearing stories though of discontent on the other side of the river at Gillingham. Their 2016 form is very similar to ours.

P 35 W 9, D 10, L 16. GF 44, GA 53 Pts 37 compared to ours P 36 W 7 D 10 L 19 GF 40 GA 60 Pts 31

Would anyone consider Justin Edinburgh as a suitable replacement? Or is this for similar to ours and the Gills fans should give him the chance to turn it around.

Personally, after the drubbing that they gave us at the beginning of the season I would not have expected them to be in a similar position to us.

Not for me.

I like JE but I would just be pretty underwhelmed if we appointed him. He hasn't done enough to show he's any better than what we've got at the moment in all honesty.

Surely it should be Edinburgh and Harris once they are both sacked. Who cares how well they have performed at other clubs. They are ex shrimpers and that's all you need to be better than PB. If you don't believe me just read anyone of over 100 threads on this subject.

My son's coach recently did his grade 2 UEFA badge and spent some time with professional clubs. While he was really disappointed with the likes of Sheringham at Stevenage he was totally impressed with Edinburgh. The training was quality and everyone (from office staff to first-team pros) seemed in awe of him.

I would go for Francisco Cagigao as manager, with David Roche, Mark Salter and James Lawson as the backroom team.
I don't see how that could fail

I like your irony...

There are many (including myself when being blind to reality) who want Chris Powell, Edinburgh, Harris etc - because they are ex-Shrimpers.

Next time we require a manager (I hope we start winning again ..so it is a long time ahead) - we need the best man for the job. Our record of bringing ex-Shrimpers back is abysmal. From Peter Taylor as manager to Barnard & Eastwood as players. Dreadful and particularly sad failures second time around. Such a bloody shame.
I would be VERY wary.

Look at Forest and one of their all-time icons - Stuart Pearce. They should have kept the burning glow of love & pride from the past - not end up with sacking a legend. It rarely works.

On the other hand: Tilson, Prior, Edwards and hopefully Maher.

Maher and AB ,end of ,fact.

I hope not. How much managerial experience?
Does the Job Spec for Manager at Southend United say "No football League or even 1st Team managerial skills, knowledge or experience are required - oh but must be a supporters favourite".

Exasperated at the thought.

I agree with this assessment. Sentiment should not get in the way of clear-eyed judgement. I am hoping also there is no need for a new manager. However, should a vacancy arise I think either Kenny Jackett or Justin Edinburgh would be strong candidates on the basis of their track-records and ability to operate with a limited budget.
