Official Match Thread Portsmouth v Southend United

Other week it was Norwood and Jackson... this week it's Marquis. Let's face it, Goodship isn't anything like them. We can't expect him to be. But unfortunately, that is the difference.

Goodship's very good chance was a typical shot of a player lacking confidence. He's actually played some nice passes in this game and has found space a lot. He just needs a goal.

In a game of mainly errors from both team, until the 40th minute the only bits of quality came from us. But we are so terrified of going forwards in case we leave gaps behind... and in the last 5 mins of the half we just kept backing off and letting them have the ball until they were around 30 yards out. Then it's just one decent ball in to undo the defence.

Well we are going to have to attack now.

Sounds familiar.

They had a throw on the edge of their box. It ended up in our goal after 11 unchallenged passes. The 12th pass floated into our box and Marquis can miss unchallenged on the middle of the 6 yard box. All too familiar.

In a perverse way I think we are still well and truly in this game. Portsmouth are bordering on just as lax with the ball as us. If Hutchinson, Cox and Goodship had all found the target with their shots then we would be smiling. Need to keep it tight for the first ten minutes of the second half and then push on for an equaliser. COYB

The first half mentality was to be compact and not concede , this half the whole mentality has to be to commit players forward and get tighter to their players when they have the ball

Huge miss for Portsmouth. Curtis' left wing cross finds an unmarked Harrison who somehow heads over from close range
