Kane Ferdinand played most his games in Midfield but played just off the lone striker several times, daggers away last season when he got 2 springs to mind. He also played right back when clohessy missed a game or too through suspension. Also came through the youth ranks as a centre back

Good call, although debatable whether that's up front or in midfield.

And on that note what about his former team-mate Anthony Grant? Grant played centre-back, right-back, full-back and all across the midfield. For about half an hour against Barnet he was the furthest forward, but I think he was probably the furthest advanced in a 4-5-1 rather than the deeper of the two in a 4-4-1-1

If my memory serves me right Julian Hails had an odd game pushed up front?

Hmm, interesting one. Definitely had a lengthy career in midfield and then as a full-back and I him being pushed up front rings a bell. Anyone else remember this?

Roy McDonough

When did he start a match in midfield?

Didn't Ryan hall play left back once in his first season with us, pretty sure he's played up front as well

Another cracking call, but I think it was against Hereford when we won 4-0. Looking at soccerbase Johhny Herd went off injured after 18 minutes and Harry Crawford came on.

tony bentley came from stoke as an old time right winger moved to right mid then right back and captain good player

Big Dave Martin (not the recent DM) played everywhere for us.

Beat me to it, Rich. Just in case of any query, he played up front v Derby in the Littlewoods the year after we beat them, so that must have been '88. It was a home tie and I think we lost 2-1.

Benno is God.

Mickey Beesley and Tony Hadley were before my time. Where did they play - centre-back or full-back, central midfield or outwide?

Tony Hadley played as a centre-back, centre-midfield and centre-forwrad - so a true playedat back, mid and up-top, none of this wishy-washy played wide in a front 3 (which can jsut as easily be wide in a midfield 5).

As did the original Dave Martin. Very strange decision to play him against Mark Wright though when Donut was available.

I'm convinced Titus played for us more than once, and Tes appeared as a centre back at Newcastle United a few times.

I dont think Titus Bramble ever played for Southend United - Clubs include, Ipswich, Colchester, Wigan, Newcastle, and Sunderland....

To be fair, I'm pretty sure Morley started a game in a strikers positon. Can't really say that he played as a striker though, just that he was on the pitch and every other position was covered by someone else. God he was ****. Wonder what he's upt these days...

You're right pal, Morley played a few games up front for us.....and was as dire there as he was at the back. He is 35 now and plays for the mighty Bangor City.

Went up to see him play there. It was a beautiful day, had a spot of lunch and it came to less than a fiver.

Keith Dublin up front

Andy Rammell at Center Back are my 2 most favourite swapped positions ..

Years late but I second the Julian Hails call. Definitely had a few games as one of the front three in a 4-3-3.

Bilel played at the back often, wing and at centre forward. I would however like to erase Brown's (still mystifying) decision to start him in midfield at Wembley (dropping Ryan Leonard in the process) v Crewe in what turned out to be his last ever match For Southend.

Mike Beesley joined Southend United on the eve of 1962-63 a centre-forward he came from West Ham United along with winger Derek Woodley. In his first 6 league games he scored 8 times for the club(think this record still stands??). He left at the end of the 1964-65 season having scored 36 league & cup goals in 87 matches and joined Peterborough United.
After a couple of seasons with the Posh he rejoined Southend United being signed by Ernie Shepherd & in the following 4 seasons played mainly in defence or midfield scoring just 13 times in over 150 league and cup matches. In Mike's second spell with the club we were unbeaten in the matches in which he scored. He was released at the end of the 1970-71 season by the then manager Arthur Rowley.
Being slightly biased probably one of the best utility players the club has had over the last 50+years.
I first wrote to Mike Beesley as a 13 year old kid living in Little Wakering in 1962 and over 55 years later I am pleased to say we still meet up from time to time for a chat about the 60's and it is a real pleasure to be able to call him a friend.
