Thought last night's sponsors' evening, held for the first time at the Holiday Inn in Basildon, was a very good evening. The food was much improved on what the Cliffs has offered the last few years - a bit more basic, but much more generous portions, served at the right temperature and very tasty. Coffee was also miles better. Venue worked well, with parking overflow in Bas Vegas, not too far too walk. Staff also seemed more able so I thought the venue was a really good choice. Much easier for the players and staff too, many of whom live outside of Southend itself.
Adam Duffill performed at various points during the evening, good as always but too loud in my opinion. For a lot of people, this is their only chance to get to spend time with the players so they want to talk to them, and, at times, it was hard to hear. Comedian compere was good too, we found him quite funny, but didn't feel he was quite right for the evening.
The magician going round before and during the meal was ok, but personally, I thought the one we'd had the last two years was better, but appreciate you need to change things from time to time.
Breaks between main course and dessert and then dessert and coffee meant both the magician and comedian were given plenty of time to entertain.
Players all seemed very relaxed - couple not in attendance, including the Zone's LCP (who, I understand, was unwell), James Golding, Danny Waldron and Jack Wood.
Oh, and I won heads and tails!
