Players signed from rivals

Harry, you might be getting mixed up with Gary Moore who we signed round about the same time. He came from the 'cod-heads'.

No Tony, Owen Simpson is a Grimsby lad and went back there when his footb all career was over. I knew he played for Colchester but really didn't remember us signing him from Col Ewe. He scored one of the memorable Roots Hall goals when he hammered a left foot shot from all of 40 yards into the North Bank goal against Northampton.

I used to see him regularly as he lived in seaview road in leigh, a turning off the broadway. The season we signed him, at our game at colchester i got talking to some female (i think!) who asked me to give her best wishes to him with a message of who she (it) was. I relayed this to him when i next saw him and he remembered the intividual. Incidently, i lost an engraved lighter outside layer road in 1976 and no-one ever handed it in. Thieving swine or just illiterate?.

Only one of the list so far has legendary status at both clubs. Super Roy McDonut

I have often thought that Big Roy must be the only man on the planet (dead or alive)that would have both Colchester and Southend fans turning up in numbers to sing his praises at a testimonial/charity match.

As for people that have gone from Southend to Colchester; Paul Roberts, Jeff Hull and the other Tony Hadley.

As for our 'legends', didn't Steve McGavin play a few games for you ?

I think the situation has mainly been the other way round with your lads leaving to join us, some of which were not very good....

My memory goes back a long way so how about some of these for the old timers on here, and also the not so old ;)

Peter Bullock
Gary Moore
Kirk Game
John Kurila
Jason Cook
Alex Smith
Nicky Smith
Dave Martin
Bobby Howlett

To name but a few

Guttridge ....

Double agents mate. We got the best out of them and then sent them onto you to screw you up.

Glad to see it mainly worked... lol

J Boere - Wet Spam

I think I'll let Lord Walker fill us in on whether or not he thought Boere was value for money.

*feels the bile rising in his throat*

Two points of order, Stats:

1. We signed Boere from Palace.
2. West Ham aren't really our rivals, much as we would like them to be.

You know for someone that usually makes a lot of sense in their posts you really are letting your emotions rule your head on this one Matt.

I refer you to the post I made in the 'Heath and White in' thread. Let me know your thoughts on my opinions because I truly am at a loss as to understand the thinking behind your above post.

This is football. The heart and the gut rule the head at least half the time.

I can't help feeling a bit sullied by the thought that we're taking a loan from our inferior county rivals. They are, on every rational basis, a smaller club than us - fewer fans, less impressive history, shorter history, fewer achievements in football, finished below us in the league last season.

It therefore sticks in the craw that we're having to knock on their door to ask if we can borrow a couple of guys who can't get into their first team. It's like we've gone to borrow some shampoo off the kid in the playground with greasy hair who no one likes... it's more than a little embarrassing.

Have to take issue with you there MtS. They are very much our rivals, maybe not so much on the pitch in recent seasons, but they are our main competitors for the hearts and minds of the people of South Essex. Driving along the A127/A12 last night I noticed two of those repulsive Ray Winstone billboards - I nearly vomited over my upholstery. I hate them. I hate everything about them. That makes them rivals.

And Brett Angell, I still love you for THAT goal.

In the rivalry stakes, Southend is to West Ham as Dagenham & Redbridge is to Southend.

Just because they're close by, just because we feel that they nick our fans, just because we hate them... doesn't make them our rivals, IMHO.

I prefer to look at it in the way that we need defenders and there are 2 up the road that Tilly rates higher than Lambert so we've got them on a "try before you buy" basis. If they do a good job and fit in (which they might) then we will be all sorted thanks.

Over the last 3 seasons Col U have certainly won the bragging rights, did MUCH better than us in the CCC (mainly due to Cureton and Iwelhomo or whatever is name is) and last year played us off the park for an hour at the Hall and we were lucky to draw.

We only finished above them because they had a new ground and, in my opinion, almost every game was an away game for them until they got used to the stadium. And who knows? If Heath and White had been in their side last season they may have finished higher. We'll never know.

They certainly aren't mugs, anyway, and have league experience. Should be able to do a job, wages unlikely to be an issue, no danger of having to relocate and they're willing to come.

Sounds ok to me.

West Ham have always been rivals for support , rather than on the pitch.

I always had a soft spot for West ham, having a load of mates who supported them in the late 70's....then they got that Shop in Clifftown road and I have hated them ever since

How many fans have the Daggers nicked? Only Dagenham Kev, and they're welcome to him!

1. By that rationale we're a bigger club by 3 to 2... ;)

2. To be fair don't you trust Tilson's judgement of a player over Lambert's? To quote a certain Orient legend now playing for the Farmers who shall remain nameless: "I like it there fine, by the gaffer is a complete c***"

1. By that rationale we're a bigger club by 3 to 2... ;)

The second and fourth reasons were essentially tautological, making it 2-2.

:p

It's a fair point - and I do trust Tilson's judgment on the whole. But it's also clear that we are perhaps more financially strapped this season than we have been for a very long time - hence the concern at being reduced to taking loans from the farm-hands...
