Funny how these people go missing when Southend are doing well

I’m still here mate. I make no apology for thinking around the turn of the year when the performances were dodgy and results were **** that maybe, KM wasn’t the right man to take us further. Since then, I’ve well and truly been made to eat some humble pie and will admit that I jumped the gun, that I got it wrong. The form over the second half of the season has been very good, albeit with some still questionable results against teams who have ended up relegated but that doesn’t matter now. I wish KM, his staff and players all the very best in the playoffs and hope that they can continue to prove me to be the fool that I sometimes appear to be and go on and take us back to the EFL.

As I said, the players and our management teams are 3 more wins from being Southend Utd legends. We haven’t won 3 in a row yet, this season, this is the best time to break the curse!!

I think there has also been a change in form with a slight change in personnel and style of play within the formations we use.

Husin, who I hold my hand up to being critical of earlier in the season is now playing deeper and playing a linking role between defence and midfield, which he is doing very well and seems to be more suitable to, which has created the two benefits that I can see, others might see more.

1. It allows Moreton, when fit to spread the ball with his longer passing range, knowing Husin will be the deep support.

2. with Husin dropping deeper that has allowed KAF a run in the side, which he has no doubt benefitted from and we have seen what he brings and how he can close down and pressure defences further up the park, as well as using his pace when the opportunity arises whilst we are in possession.

We have also gone a little more direct than earlier in the season, which again makes defences a little more wary of pushing up too far, particularly when we have KAF and Bonne on the pitch at the same time.

Our form since 1st Jan has us 4th in the table over that period. It will be interesting to see how we and Rochdale approach the opening minutes of our eliminator, however I hope the tweeks in tactics and incoming personnel give them more to think about us.

Fair play

I think getting a decent centre half (centre halves) is when it changed for the better.

I have a dream ...

That some of those old North Bank/PAK boys might be able to don their old butcher's coats for the semi-final with Forest Green Rovers.
Aaaah yes I remember those butcher's coats very well, although I do believe that they were a little bit later than the period of time when I spent most of my mis-spent youth in the North Bank as a regular member of the legendary PAK. Before the white coats came into fashion one of the early friends that I came across was a chap called John (no surname), I was indeed really envious of his regular away garb and apart from the regulation blue & white scarf which we would always wear away from home but often had to hide John always wore a type of khaki army jacket with various S.U.F.C logos written on it. When I first started working in the mid 60's I then decided to buy something similar for myself and remember clearly writing one of many things on the lower back which was "B******S TO STOCKPORT"(much to Mum's disgust). This was after a rather unsavoury incident that had happened to us on a car-park after we had been beaten 4-1 at Edgeley Park back in Easter 1967.

I’m curious as to whether this now means Maher is on a longer leash for you now that he’s demonstrated that he can turn things around? E.g. if we have a couple of injuries and start falling behind, knowing what you now know, will you want COSU to replace Maher or reinforce the squad?

I think getting a decent centre half (centre halves) is when it changed for the better.

I think it was as much the forwards as the defenders.

Getting Charley Kendall meant we could press from the front, keep our forwards fresher etc. He gave us energy. Then once we signed Hopper we really started motoring as we could hold the ball up top, we could commit to playing three up front etc.

I suppose ultimately it was therefore being able to replace Cardwell and Kensdale (and did we need two players to replace each - eg Golding and Goodliffe for Kensdale and Kendall and Hopper for Cardwell?).

The worry is both Golding and Goodliffe are only on loan. The good news is there shouldn’t be any impediment to doing business this summer - whether it’s them or someone else.

Knowing what I know now and seeing how he has been able to turn our season around from what looked like just a mid table, nothing really happening side to a playoff contender.. I'm certainly willing to take a back seat and just let things plan out. KM has showed that he is able to make little adjustments, especially to player roles and personnel (something I was critical off) within his way of playing that has benefited not only the individual but for the team as a whole. I was sceptical at best with some of the signings he made, especially during the summer (I know, we were living off scraps) but the signings of the likes of LCP, Goodliffe who has come good, Golding and Kendall have given me enough hope to believe that a summer with that level of recruitment to add to an already good squad would see us really give the top spot a push next season. Another criticism of mine was that I wasn't entirely convinced KM was improving players he had at his disposal. For example, it seemed to take an age for him to be willing to put KAF in from the start but once he did, it's clear for all to see the improvement he has made over the course of the season half of the season especially. The likes of Husin and Coker have also improved in recent weeks and that can only be down to the belief KM has instilled in them and the work they are doing on the training pitch.

To summarise, I think sometimes we as football fans let our emotions and our opinions get in the way of what actually is the bigger picture. I maintained even throughout my spell of doubting whether or not KM was the right man for the job that I still had nothing but respect for him and for what he had done for this football club as a player and now as manager. I am probably guilty of getting a bit carried away when we string a couple of wins together (it's back to back promotions from here on fellas kinda thing) to getting a tad bit over the top in my reaction to a string of defeats, that's something for me personally to work on being better on though.

Great post.
You sound a bit keyboard warriorish tbh.
Love differing opinions.
Hate those who clearly wish for negative outcomes to back up their original stance...that's the difference.

Let’s please refrain from calling other posters keyboard warriors if we disagree with others. It doesn’t further the conversation.

All I have seen you do recently is have unsubtle digs at the Maher out brigade. I have actually found the die hard Maher inners to be more aggressive and rude. I have no issues with your opinion but I find your trying to incite those that disagree a bit disrespectful and massively tiresome. I say what I feel, sometimes maybe not put it how people like which is to my detriment, and as yet am still a way away from being a Maher in supporter based on what I have seen of late, not fully against him either but not jumping on the Messiah bandwagon.

From the Rochdale fans forum:

Spoke with a Southend fan today and was surprised he wasn’t more upbeat. He said they will simply sit and try and grab a goal out of something. I hope not because that is the worst scenario for us. Come the day the first goal will be vital. He mentioned they only have one fit centre half right now.
