Pick a best game for each player (past or present)

Pick a southend player, past or present, and then pick their best ever performance in a game (give a reason why)... it doesn't have to be a big game, or even a good result... but something that sticks in your memory.

I'll go for:

Kevin Maher
Southend 5 QPR 0 - CCC - 9/02/07
Two stunning goals and he bossed the midfield from start to finish... simply superb from our most decorated captain

JCR
West Brom H 3-1 01/01/2007

Scores his only goals in a first-half rout and two pretty good goals with shots from outside the box, something he failed to do in the other (insert amount here) games.

Jay Smith, home against Cambridge, August 2002.

Thought we really had something special on our hands, such a shame his career was ruined by injury.

Efe Sodje, 0-3 defeat to Col U at home in the CCC.

Fantastic headed assist in the opening minute, showing great awareness also ;)

Mike Marsh 5-2 win versus Bolton. He looked like a man playing against boys.

Ricky Otto 6-1 win versus Oxford. Mooney scored a hat-trick and Ricky was man of the match, that takes some doing.

Gary Jones 5-2 win versus Padova. I believe he was possessed by the ghost of Harold Halse on this night.

Stan Collymore 3-0 win versus Bristol Rovers. Beat them by himself. Literally.

Only game Gordon Connelly played well for Southend, if memory serves me right 2.0 down at HT versus Brighton and we came back to win 3.2 Connelly was amazing and Alan Little told everyone he would be the dogs bollox, sadly it never came to anything

I'm stuck with Macca:

2-1 away at Macclesfield, with two goals

or

Preston away, at his old team with a stunning volley and a 3-2 win

Wasn't Macca outstanding away at Preston? I didn't go but remember hearing the commentary and reports afterwards.

Wayne Gray - Bristol Rovers (H) the year we got promoted to league 1. He was Unstoppable that night, chasing lost causes on numerous occasions and somehow winning the ball, he was a powerhouse that night and rovers simply couldn't handle him. Scored from the spot as well IIRC.

And to top it all we went top of the league!!!

Cant argue with most of the selections

My particular stand out was Keith Jones - 0-1 against Everton at Goodison Park, but the man was immense in the middle against a Premier League outfit who were lucky to beat us, and their fans clapped us off the pitch !

Others that stand in the memory, were Macca at Macclesfield, Maher at home to QPR and Freddy Eastwood at Chesterfield in the 4-3 win ...

Excellent choice - remember Benji was immense on that day too. Keith Jones was a fantastic player, would love to have seen him and a fully fit Mike Marsh playing in the same central midfield.

Further to my post on the ex-Shrimpers thread, I'd have to go for, somewhat randomly, David "High Tower" Howell ,who was a defensive rock in a hard fought 1-0 win against Middlesbrough at Roots Hall on Sept 11, 1993, 15 years to the day tomorrow.

Kept Bernie Slaven et al at bay all game...great memories.

Gareth Risbridger vs Darlington, 11 August 2001

Only a minute plus stoppages, but what a minute plus stoppages..
