As PB would certainly demand escape clauses if a bigger club came calling, couldn't we include escape clauses if the first half of the forthcoming season turned out to be as bad as the last half of the season which has just finished?

PB's escape clauses involve large six figure compensation payments so in fact this is the clause that evens the playing field with the fact that we pay the compensation if we sack him- Ron probably is not hugely concerned about that as he changes managers on average about once a decade..

Equally, if we start the season really well and are in the automatic/play-off mix, it becomes harder to poach PB as the compensation will be more due to the length left on his contract.

Bolton aren't the only Club to have sniffed around PB during his tenure with Southend.

I think this is a good move by the Club. A lot of talk has been made about players becoming unsettled because of speculation over PB's position at the Club, and him signing an extension to his current contract shows his future is with the Club.

Whilst the end of the season was disappointing, he has been a success at the Club so far. Reaching the play-offs, then winning promotion, then guiding us to safety in our first season back in League One. He has a tough job on his hands this summer, but him signing an extension shows the current crop of players, and players we have already spoken to about coming to the football club, that he is here to stay.

Agree- people in the game know that PB's stock has risen and other opportunities are potentially there. They also know that PB has a big compensation clause in his contract, a chairman that believes in him - and so I think a contract extension then makes a very positive statement about where the club sees itself. If the uncertainty was, we were assured, putting players off then the opposite should be true (although be prepared to be told how somehow it isn't..)

Is it?

Both are egotistical pricks but it's very hard to argue with Evans' CV

All Evans success has come when he’s had a comparativelymassive budget to work with. Boston, Crawley and Rotherham (until they hitChampionship) were spending heaps on wages compared to their competitors. Takeaway the seasons he didn’t have the best budget in the league and his CV isvery average.

Yes, if there is one area we can't point the finger at Ron, it would be compensation for managers in the last ten years. Think how much the likes of Leeds must have paid out in that time.

Frankly, I find it inconceivable that Phil Brown is still in a job at Southend. His tenure has been absolutely abysmal and we are rewarding him with an improved contract. Let's face it three full season's and all he has done is:

In his first season reach the play-offs
Second season play-offs again and victory in the Final at Wembley
Third season consolidate in League One with by-and-large the same players that were in League Two

Sounds like the start of a 'What has he ever doe for us' sketch:smile:

You do know it's JUNE the first, not April the first, right?? ;o)

And with Boston they were paying players 2 sets of wages,1 legal the other in a plain brown envelope.Ken Charlery who played for us on loan went to Boston for £150 a week which the league knew about and a separate wage which they didn't.

One thing you've got to remember about Phil Brown is that he is in the public eye a lot! Can't think of another league one or two manager who pops up on national tv or radio more then he does. So his not just in the general publics eye but the footballing worlds eye. I garentee thag whenever a manager gets the sack, at championship or league one level, possibly even the bottom four places in the premiership (although I doubt it) Phils name will be on a list of potential candidates. Not at the top of the list but there somewhere purely because he is always popping up, making publicity for himself. Protecting ourselves so we can achieve as much compensation as possible if one of these clubs was to come knocking is a good idea.

Brown set to sign new Blues deal

SOUTHEND United manager Phil Brown is to sign an extended contract before the start of the new season, Echosport can reveal.

Similarly, Crawley had very creative accounting practices....:winking:
