According to the Echo today PB is close to signing an extended contract with Southend. His current one expires in the summer of 2018. It's thought that this will extend his contract by one year to 2019.

Good news for some, apoplexy for others. If it happens it could be seen as a sign of loyalty....(you know intuitively that my last comment will bring a few responses), we shall see.

I'm completely gobsmacked that you were the first one to respond AB:smiles:. It seems there is just one more contractual paragraph to be agreed, so this may have legs.

Not a huge PB fan, but this does show commitment. On the other hand if he did really well with us, and a Prem club came in for his services, i dont think a contract would stop him going anyway.

It would entitle us to more compensation if a bigger club comes knocking. Good idea for all parties if you ask me

So if we start the season as we finished it we could be rock bottom come Xmas, that is then 2 and a half years of compensation we have to pay up. Risky if you ask me

Only half the story though.....if we start the season as we did last time around then we could be up around the play-offs.

It is a tough call.
There must be so many add on and sub clauses, releases, and other supposed issues such as Roslin/Horton/tanning/tv times that it may take until 2020 to work out.
A good Phil is very good but a poor Phil is pure pantomime dame.

Knowing the building job he's got on his hands this summer, and he's struggled to do successfully elsewhere previously, this is a big risk by Ron.

Hasn't done enough to deserve this if you ask me, at Christmas maybe, but not given our form since. If Bolton hadn't been sniffing around I doubt he'd be anywhere near a new contract.

As said before massive risk by Ron and in my opinion a huge mistake. Why not keep his contract as it is for the time being. This is going to bite us in the arse!

But still better than having a manager like Steve EVans!!!!

As PB would certainly demand escape clauses if a bigger club came calling, couldn't we include escape clauses if the first half of the forthcoming season turned out to be as bad as the last half of the season which has just finished?

OH, so that's the big new Stadium news.

Completely agree. I reckon there is more to this than we will know or find out.

Equally, if we start the season really well and are in the automatic/play-off mix, it becomes harder to poach PB as the compensation will be more due to the length left on his contract.

Bolton aren't the only Club to have sniffed around PB during his tenure with Southend.

I think this is a good move by the Club. A lot of talk has been made about players becoming unsettled because of speculation over PB's position at the Club, and him signing an extension to his current contract shows his future is with the Club.

Whilst the end of the season was disappointing, he has been a success at the Club so far. Reaching the play-offs, then winning promotion, then guiding us to safety in our first season back in League One. He has a tough job on his hands this summer, but him signing an extension shows the current crop of players, and players we have already spoken to about coming to the football club, that he is here to stay.

So here we go again in the bizarre world of Shrimperzone. All we hear around Payne and Bentley is if we want to keep them why did we not extend their contacts early. Clearly Ron has been listening to your good advise..!!

PB was criticised for not showing the required level of loyalty to the club- now he is about to make a very clear commitment that does just that.

For some Ron and PB can never win- whatever they do they will be criticised for, even if its the very thing that those criticising them have been asking them to do.

The detractors have wonderful ideas who would be better. Sometimes local PE teachers sometimes people like Paul Cook. The latter we were assured was many times better as a manager- and Portsmouth were certain to go up as champions. Or not it appears- even on a playing budget commensurate with gates of 16,000 they fail to achieve what PB achieved (of course the detractors will say he didn't achieve anything as going up via the playoffs somehow doesn't count).

For me I will be very happy if he signs an extended contract. If it brings stability it will be good and for me PB is one of the best managers outside the top two divisions, and better than some in the top two divisions. Ron is a loyal chairman and Tilly had a long long run, PS was given pretty much to the end of his 3 year contract and so we can be pretty certain that unless a top club comes waving the chequebook PB will be here long term as well (like it or not).

When he signs it is for me time for supporters to focus on supporting the manager and the team. As for the obsession with not being able to post without turning the subject into a criticism of the manager- hopefully this fetish will disappear gracefully..
