Phillips is a shrimper

Blimey, me agreeing with Wiggy over something other than Flavs - who'd have thought it :stunned:

That should ring alarm bells!

He's done nothing wrong, the £40k/£4k thing was, I believe, an honest mistake.

Pretyy big and IMHO unforgivable "mistake".

Other media sources have reported on one or more of the issues mentioned here.

Of course they have Kay - but they all got it from his original story. He isn't one amongst many, he is the sole source. I take it you know him personally, otherwise I can't understand why you arte being his apologist.

It's not only me Tom, there are others recognising the fact that he is reporting information that we really ought to know about. What I object to is our local Club sounding off at the local newspaper when things come out which they don't want to - surely that is the job of every professional journalist?

Let's just see what happens over the next month, that's all I'm saying.

But it's his job to report facts, not speculation - especially when that speculation is in itself damaging to the club. We shall see. And I'm not sure I would use the word "professional" about his reporting so far.

I do hope you aren't getting all sanctimonious here over someone who exists in a profession which you profess to want to join. I think, in reality, when you realise the kind of deadlines people work to you might accept that mistakes DO happen, and that the extra zero is perfectly possible as an oversight - proof reading doesn't always pick up everything. With all that went on last week I believe Chris was working to quite strict deadlines and having to report a lot of stuff, as well as editing the letters. I'm just saying cut him some slack.

I've worked for a paper for nigh on two months, a distinctly similar publication to the Echo including harsh deadlines. Mistakes DO happen, but with spelling the odd word. Great care is taken over figures and names especially because of the fragile nature of a possible mistake.

You make a mistake? You retract it and issue an apology in the very next issue. I've yet to see Phillips come out and say "Yep, I misplaced a 0... Sorry about that, I was completely wrong".

You chose to miss my main point though, that the figure was quoted as £40k throughout the article, not just in a passing statement once in the piece.

I have heard , through different sources, most of the stories that have surfaced over the last few months and I reserve judgement as usually there is no smoke without fire. I will make up my mind at some time in the future as I trust no-one.

I just hope Uncle Sainsbury gets his purse out or there could be trouble.

Wahey. Here we go with the 'i know something you don't know' crap. I'm not an apologist for journalists, but their job (as I understand it) is to factually report events that are in the public interest... Unfortunately the incentives nowdays have seen the move more towards either copy-and-pasting news, or towards opinion and commentary. quality investigative journalism is a dying art. Their job isn't exclusively to damage people by revealing sensitive info, however if grounded in fact and in the public interest then it's vital. Chunks of CPs recent articles have being factually wrong, and damaging to the club that we all love. ron martin might not be a saint, however I'm still yet to see solid facts that he is doing anything other than looking to ensure SUFCs future.

If I misplaced a zero in my job, I'd probably find myself in the dole queue... Along with many others on here I'm sure. Deadlines and pressure can lead to mistakes, but I'm with ESB that I seems pretty staggering that an apparently agreed figure somehow found an extra nought. Even so if it's a genuine mistake then both a public and private apology would go a long way to reparing relations with both the echo readers and the club. Instead CP comes over as a bit of a nob, hiding behind the fact that he has a season ticket. However Ron isn't out of the woods either, I'm personally still not impressed that Spinner hasn't been paid

Rather like you hiding behind your keyboard in fact? Sorry, I disagree. People used to make mistakes with zeroes often in the Bank, never cost them any job - and I lost £500 once! **** happens, you deal with it. Ron ought to be experienced enough in business to know when he gets caught out, and not carry on this little vendetta he has. And if he or Garry are reading this, then offer still stands.

And as to your allegation above - we have the council approval of the plans and the HMRC hearing coming up, that's what I meant.

Everyone saying Chris/Echo should apologise - didnt they issue an apology in the following days paper for the missprint - AND Ron acknowledged this too in his statement.

They did Paul, but I think that in itself was criticised for being a small paragraph inside the back page. Nit picking I think, it was on the page with all the letters and in a coloured box to make it reasonably clear, so you couldn't really not see it.

I can't believe what I have just read in his article. Claims to be a Shrimper, then sticks the knife in again on the flimsiest evidence (not all the players clapped). FFS, there may be any number of reasons why not all the players clapped - but by gum they played as if their hearts were in it all right.

Dreadful, spiteful, lazy incompetent reporting -shame on you Philips.

Exactly, it was a Friday night and they probably couldn't wait to get down Drummonds or Turtle Bay.

Have a bit of sympathy for the lad. He's still young, gets paid an absolute pittance, and is a Shrimper through and through. I think it's brilliant he's asking questions, and the moment that stops, we might as well all live in Russia.

He hasn't damaged anything, he hasn't asset-stripped the club, he hasn't released players, or done anything which, in a few weeks, will be forgotten about.

fair enough, i didn't see that apology

Wow, some perspective.

True enough, but in bringing more negative publicity to the club, his articles found their way into National newspapers and Television, surrounding an incredibly sensitive issue, surely he needs to handle that situation with the utmost care? He might be a young lad still, but he's had that job for a while now...

I'm glad he's asking questions aswell, but he might aswell have not bothered... As he asked the question, then printed the embelished figure anyway.

CP in my eyes has done nothing wrong,Martin on the other hand seems hellbent on the demise of the football club. When our leader stated pre season a further 2 million loss before a ball has been kicked in anger..I was astonished!!The season lasts for 10 months so the huge loss equates to 200k per month..It does not make any sense to me at all.

Surely putting the name of Southend United into the national press is a good thing. Isn't there no such thing as bad publicity?

At Leeds we have had boycotts of the YEP and such like which now results in stories ok'd by Bates first. I admire the lad for asking searching questions when he knows it may come back to haunt him. The easy thing would be to ignore whats happening

Completely agree with all of that. £40K for £4K was a massive howler, but that aside, I think Chris is entirely right to be asking the questions he's posing Ron. Let's not forget that 24hrs before Ron's PR masterpiece, we were all baying for blood (GK's, admittedly)... and yet, one carefully crafted statement from Ron later, we're all eating out of his hand.

Don't get me wrong, I think Ron's doing a good job on the whole. But he can't go around not paying wages with impunity, and he can't expect the tax-man to dance to his tune. He's good, but he's not a magician; and just sometimes, he has to conform to the rules that apply to you and me.

I'll hold my hands up and proclaim him as the club's knight in shining white armour if and when we play our first game at FF. Until then, I'll remain a wee bit scpetical.

Matt
