Phillips is a shrimper

Yep, and I really think it's time now for Ron to forget this "feud". Barrett, Mildy and Barney I believe, were the three, although it's worth noting Macca had been subbed through injury otherwise he would have done so as he always does.

It's something I've been less than happy about for a long time, Moussa, Grant, Franno - none of them ever do it at home. I have no idea why, although Franno may well feel aggrieved with sections of the Roots Hall crowd. That's why it was so refreshing having John White who came to applaud at the end of every game during his short time here.

Yes, their body language - as I predicted - spoke volumes, but guys, just remember we were 100% behind you, least you could do is acknowledge that fact.

I'm sure Macca did, unless I'm going mad! :dim: He is usually the final person to clap the fans.

I am one of those 'giving Philips grief' though I've not seen anyone claim he is responsible for things you are defending him over.
The following comments of his have all made me wary of him:
1) Asking why aren't Southend signing players when ColU are even though they have lower crowds. Philips deliberately overlooked fact ColU have wealthy owner.
2) Exaggerating money owed to Spencer Prior and trying to make it look club owed money to Little Havens.
3) Saying Prior had ' heard stories of players not being paid'. Suggests to me he asked Prior if players had told him they hadn't been paid and Prior replied they hadn't but he had heard the stories.
4) Building up the anti-King protest before the Orient game event hough it turned out to be a damp squib
5) His obsession with trying to justify himself.

OS indicates Gary Lockett wants to return to board. May be true, may be false. Who knows. Why speculate that there is some negative motive for his stepping down.

Since you are asking Philips critics to see the big picture, what is your solution to current financial problems club faces?

But to be fair, as far as i know, (regarding your 2nd point) the club DID owe money, and only after the story was published did PR Ron get his cheque book out. CP doesn't deserve criticism for that IMO.

Point 3, i haven't seen Prior refute the story anywhere else? Surely if CP had blown the story out of context etc, then Prior would have got wind of it and not been happy.

Point 4, It wasn't just CP that was reporting the unrest with fans and the board, Soccer AM mentioned it, Football League Show mentioned it, we were even in the Racing Post! CP was just doing his job. He wasn't glorifying the protests, merely reporting it.

Spot on, dont think its fair to blame Chris for this as didnt the campaign for 'protests' start right here on SZ and then Facebook? He was just reporting it and yea, probably added fuel to the fire - but he didnt light it.

Don't buy that for one second... CP's job, as a journalist, is to be fair and accurate at all times. If he's not, then he's not only being a pretty shoddy jounalist, he's leaving himself open for libel. Reporting £40,000 as the fee instead of £4,000 is sloppy journalism, but the fact he checked the fee with the club before going to print, and then decided to go with his own version anyway, destroys any defence he has.

His own unprofessionalism cost him the club's trust, nothing else.

Hallelujah Spot on Mr ESB

Phillips is a shoody journo at a shoddy paper, im sure he meant no harm but the media world is changing too be honest i dont think we (SUFC) need the Echo.

I've always been happy with Chris Phillips reporting and Bernie Friend before him. RM's tetchiness with CP and the Echo does him no favours.

Ron Martin is the fraud, Bernie Friend and Chris Phillips were/are refreshing and honest supporters of Southend. A win against possibly the worst Borient side for 10 years and Ron is let off the hook again. Master P.R man, hope the shovells go in for the new stadium come November or it will be yet another ******** lesson that you have all fallen for!

Wiggy... you really need to get laid

Blimey, me agreeing with Wiggy over something other than Flavs - who'd have thought it :stunned: He's done nothing wrong, the £40k/£4k thing was, I believe, an honest mistake. Other media sources have reported on one or more of the issues mentioned here.

Point 1. He had to call the club in order to clarify the figure owed with the club. So, whereas £40k was never mentioned between the two parties, £4k sure as hell was.

Point 2. Pages are usually proof read at least twice before going to print. The original article mentioned the figure of £40k more than once... The likelihood of all instances being an "honest mistake"? Second to none.

Point 3. A Professional Football Club owes some £4,000? Shock horror, If we're going down the petty cash root, there'd be two stories for every day of the year. A Professional Football Club owes £40,000... Some of which to a Charity? Now that's newsworthy...

I'll stand firm in my profession, I know some journalists like to embelish the facts slightly in order to sell papers and some are more trustworthy. I also know the likelihood of a Club Chairman rubbishing stories to spin negative press... But to me, there's only one outcome here, and I'm shocked more people aren't backing the chairman over repeat offender like Chris Phillips.

Nothing wrong with agreeing with me, they all do eventually on here although never admit it!

Wiggy you daft bint, take a chill pill..I am sure deep down in CP's heart he is SUFC through and through..and also I take his attitude on board that he has to print what he hears. In fact I admire him for sometimes digging...Sensationalism I don't just for a story that now seems 100% out of context with the facts.

Who knows if a shovel will hit the ground soon....There will be nobody more than me on this website wiping egg off his face if it does not. I have faith and from what I know we will succeed.

I do hope you aren't getting all sanctimonious here over someone who exists in a profession which you profess to want to join. I think, in reality, when you realise the kind of deadlines people work to you might accept that mistakes DO happen, and that the extra zero is perfectly possible as an oversight - proof reading doesn't always pick up everything. With all that went on last week I believe Chris was working to quite strict deadlines and having to report a lot of stuff, as well as editing the letters. I'm just saying cut him some slack.

If I misplaced a zero in my job, I'd probably find myself in the dole queue... Along with many others on here I'm sure. Deadlines and pressure can lead to mistakes, but I'm with ESB that I seems pretty staggering that an apparently agreed figure somehow found an extra nought. Even so if it's a genuine mistake then both a public and private apology would go a long way to reparing relations with both the echo readers and the club. Instead CP comes over as a bit of a nob, hiding behind the fact that he has a season ticket. However Ron isn't out of the woods either, I'm personally still not impressed that Spinner hasn't been paid

I think that is there is fault on both sides. Chris Phillips should have got the amount right as it was the most critical part of the report and there is a huge difference between 4k and 40k. However, that doesn't take away from the fact that we did owe Prior an amount of money which should have been paid more promptly.

I can't believe what I have just read in his article. Claims to be a Shrimper, then sticks the knife in again on the flimsiest evidence (not all the players clapped). FFS, there may be any number of reasons why not all the players clapped - but by gum they played as if their hearts were in it all right.

Dreadful, spiteful, lazy incompetent reporting -shame on you Philips.
