Phillips is a shrimper

In a very measured article Chris Phillips remains committed but largely unrepentant.
http://www.echo-news.co.uk/sport/th...still_a_Shrimper_through_and_through/?ref=rss

Did anyone else remark on the fact he noted, about there being only three players who stayed on the pitch, to thank the fans, after the final whistle?

Yep, and I really think it's time now for Ron to forget this "feud". Barrett, Mildy and Barney I believe, were the three, although it's worth noting Macca had been subbed through injury otherwise he would have done so as he always does.

It's something I've been less than happy about for a long time, Moussa, Grant, Franno - none of them ever do it at home. I have no idea why, although Franno may well feel aggrieved with sections of the Roots Hall crowd. That's why it was so refreshing having John White who came to applaud at the end of every game during his short time here.

Yes, their body language - as I predicted - spoke volumes, but guys, just remember we were 100% behind you, least you could do is acknowledge that fact.

I'm fairly sure Macca was out there.

Which of the other three weren't then? Had to dash so only saw Barrett and Barney, thought I saw Mildy too, he usually does. Not usual to come back on the pitch at the end once you've been subbed - and Macca's body language was NOT good.

Mildy was definitely still there as well. After one of the goals went in, his celebrations and screams of "COME ON!!!" to the West Stand were great to see

Barrett, McCormack, Barnard & Tilson did the rounds. Most of the newer lot didn't bother, but they usually don't either so that's nothing too remarkable.

I did notice that the players left the field quicker than usual.
Four stayed back longer - mildy, macca, barratt & barney.
What significance it had is pure speculation
As the 'king out' banner had been taken to the front of the west stand at the end of the game, it could just as easily be interpreted as the players not wanting to be associated with that.
I don't doubt Philips is a genuine Southend fan who wants the best for the club but his recent efforts seemed to have tried to play up the current difficulties.
Don't disagree with him that he should report the good and the bad but there is more than one way of doing that. Printing incorrect facts and misleading statements is not IMO the right way to do it.

I've always been happy with Chris Phillips reporting and Bernie Friend before him. RM's tetchiness with CP and the Echo does him no favours.

CPs only "crime" was reporting stories surrounding going on at Roots Hall,Granted it seems CP added an extra nought but hey ho no ones perfect,Phillips will never harm Southend United FC,Just maybe giving fans a heads up on how the club is being run.

Some of you need to look at the bigger picture instead of giving Phillips grief.

Was Phillips gulity of the following events!!

Club soon to be in debt for £7,000,000
Main assets all sold
Possible closure in the next few weeks
Tilson possibly being undermined and forced to work with no money and unable to sign any player on a permanent deal

I have faith in Phillips and certainly have little faith in persons running the football club,Maybe the reason why Mr Lockett bailed out?

We all know there are severe difficulties regarding finances and i think we would all be shocked to find out otherwise, but we won't i guess.
Chris is trying to convey to us these difficulties and i don't blame him on that part, but he has to understand that when the club want to hang on to every penny for as long as possible, then we will upset those who are waiting for money.

No need to shout about hundreds signing up on facebook to organise a demonstration though eh Chris? After all, it wasn't the case was it at the match?

The upshot of it all is basically bad press for the club. At a time where we desperately need to sell more tickets and Phillips goes round scaring off families who may have turned up for example.

I am one of those 'giving Philips grief' though I've not seen anyone claim he is responsible for things you are defending him over.
The following comments of his have all made me wary of him:
1) Asking why aren't Southend signing players when ColU are even though they have lower crowds. Philips deliberately overlooked fact ColU have wealthy owner.
2) Exaggerating money owed to Spencer Prior and trying to make it look club owed money to Little Havens.
3) Saying Prior had ' heard stories of players not being paid'. Suggests to me he asked Prior if players had told him they hadn't been paid and Prior replied they hadn't but he had heard the stories.
4) Building up the anti-King protest before the Orient game event hough it turned out to be a damp squib
5) His obsession with trying to justify himself.

OS indicates Gary Lockett wants to return to board. May be true, may be false. Who knows. Why speculate that there is some negative motive for his stepping down.

Since you are asking Philips critics to see the big picture, what is your solution to current financial problems club faces?

If Chris Phillips is a true blue then how comes he sensationalised his main story in the Echo the other night by adding a zero making £4000 into £40,000......mmmm maybe £4000 wont sell as many papers as £40k eh Chris ?? We all know that the club is in serious debt so that was a bit of a non story on its own wasnt it. And it was nice to see that the apology took up a just a fraction of the front and backpage his original article did. Methinks Chris could be the original wolf in sheeps clothing crying crocodile tears as we speak....

I can assure people that chris phillips's hobby is to search his name on the zone, so watch out for a ****ed off PM from him!!

The fact that he has to try to justify his actions by saying how he's a superamazing fan of SUFC shows how he ballsed up big time. Those King quotes were obviously out of context, and he messed up about Spinner. I'd rather have a Col Ewe supporting reporter for the echo as long as they were objective and factual - Phillips is neither

Good post.

Which accurate, proven fact has CP actually come up with in the last few days? (One we did not already know beforehand)!

I believe the '40000' was a genuine error - just unfortunate how it looked and the consequences it had.

In fact, if Chris has printed the correct £4000 - dont people think this figure makes it look worse? I.e. why cant we afford just £4000 - 40,000 I could understand a delay, but to hold back a £4k payment shouts 'problems'.

Give the guy a break, he is a genuine fan just doing his job. As he says, he cannot print "everything is rosey" as he would get the sack and some other reporter will come in and print exactly the same.

The media will never change - a story is a story.

As for 'inaccuracies' - Ron's dig at the editor being a ColU fan is completely baseless is it not and now proven from various sources to be untrue?

Has he pm'd you in the past then Pubes?

1000% correct (I added an extra nought to make it more sensational)......
