People's Opinions on this board!

Guys/Gals that have played football do understand more about positioning/movement off the ball etc. I played for 15 years in quite good teams and although I never was/never will be as good as SUFC players etc etc, I can see from the South Stand when players are positioned badly/not following their man/ball watching/not playing a blatantly obvious ball into space for a player to run into/players not running into space etc.

I think there are a lot of us on here in the same boat and it frustrates us watching these things happening/not happening when we can see the frailties, even though we are not great players ourselves!!

I could see how good Maher was, as lots on here could but others couldn't. Sideways or backwards movement creates space for other players to move into etc.

I sort of half agree with you there. If you play a game then you will always have a better insight into how it works compared to someone who hasn't.

However, that certainly doesn't mean that if you haven't played that you don't know what you're talking about.

I was being sarcastic....

Hmmm, prepared to give you the benefit of the doubt, however not convinced - maybe the inclusion of a suitable smiley or exclamation mark might have helped.

Did think it was out of character though. I don't honestly think my opinions are usually that far off the majority - well, not as far as football is concerned anyway. On other things I accept that I might as well be from another planet!

Indeed after 20 odd years of watching football I would like to think I have a rough idea what i'm talking about!

Unfortunately I could never play when I was younger due to bad asthma, I would have made a mean centre-half too!

Also I've never played cricket either so does that mean I have no idea about fielding positions or can tell the difference between a yorker and a full-toss?

I could tell Beefy was being sarcastic! :p ;)

I didn't know Wiggy was involved in cricket !!

I think it makes a world of difference.

If anyone has been involved with a professional club, either on or off the pitch, they will agree with me when I say that it is a world apart from the local football set up that I figure most of us are more familiar with.

Again, if you have played at a decent level, say semi-pro, then there is so much more to the game than just going out and playing in a 4-4-2 formation or whatever.

The point is that the experienced eye will watch the whole game, whereas the inexperienced eye will follow the ball.

Excellent post.

I think it is also worth mentioning that just because someone has played at a certain level doesn't mean they've understood it all (Dominic Iorfa was an international but I wouldn't necessarily rate him as one of the most tactical astute players I've seen) and just because someone hasn't played at a certain level doesn't mean that they can't understand some of the more advanced tactical stuff.

In all seriousness, I really do think that only people who have guided Southend United into the Premier League on Football Manager 2008 should be able to pass comment on tactics and team selection.

:p Why do I feel in such a minority on here today - where are all the other ladies?!

Personally , I think a large difference between the posters is experience, the experience of seeing really poor Southend sides , having really poor managers and being in crowds of less than 2000 at home for a league game.
There has been high expectations of the club in the last 4 years or so and this has reflected its self in the postings when we do not achieve the expected results.
Imagine what the board would have been like in the Bate or Moore years (apart from a lot less busy that is)

As for picking up the tactics, apart from playing, there is years of watching as well as the position in the ground.
The biggest gripe for me though is those who comment on the referee yet obviously have no knowledge of refereeing. The tell tale sign for me is reference in the post to the Rules....

there are no rules FS they are laws. The strangest one to most people is that foul and abusive language cannot be given a yellow. It must be a red, which is why a lot of refs don't give it.

How narrow minded. I've never played football; but I did play hockey for Essex. I do understand the importance of positioning, tactics and TEAM spirit.
I do not appreciate being told my opinion is not informed because I've never played football. Grow up.
