Past Southend goal-keepers

We lost 4-0 to Stoke.........
Think CP'smate is probably thinking about the home game to Stoke in our brief stay in the Championship under Tilly where we did indeed beat Stoke 1-0 IIRC after beating Sunderland at home early in the season, causing Roy Keane to lose his job before we lost at Palace after Freddy Eastwood. had scored in the first half to put us ahead.

There's always one. Fortunately their perception wasn't shared by others -those who really can judge his peers....

"winning the PFA League One player of the year and was named in the League One Team of the Year in 2005–06; he was also named Southend United supporters' player of the year in 2002–03 and Players' Player of the year in 2003–04 and again in 2005–06."
I'm almost certain that's a myth based on an unofficial poll rigged by us!

Flavs was half-decent but froze on his goal-line on too many occasions. Good reflexes certainly but didn't command his area as well as the likes of Sansome did. He'd probably be my second choice after Federici, who was both a fantastic shot-stopper and a great commander of his area.

I'm too young to rate Cawston although on the one occasion I saw him - an away game at Scunthorpe - he made an outstanding double save from close range. Sadly we lost that game 2-1.

Niall Quinn I think.

I saw Neville Southall at Carlisle when we lost 5-0 - the only good thing about that day was the trip on the Settle Carlisle railway!

Ha-Ha! I knew Stoke came into it somewhere!

We managed to ship twelve goals in four days whilst scoring none - four at Stoke on the Saturday followed by eight at Palace on the Tuesday!

We played well at Stoke though despite the scoreline - particularly in the first half hour iirc.

Definitely Sammy for me. But that is probably coloured with child like nostalgia. Closely followed by “ohhhhhhhh it’s Roycey!!!”

Remember Roycey’s first game being in the North Bank and every time he came to kick it we just willed it to go further than 35 yards. Turned into an absolute legend

As you know I saw that Palace game.Must say I thought Paul Clark was past it by then but I believe he went on to play for a couple more seasons. Not every day you come up against Bright and Wright in such goalscoring form I suppose.

I let in 2 against Arsenal youth team back in 1962 ,we lost 2-0 at RH,First was no fault of mine ,defence went missing left there player to come through without being challenged , 2 nd one i should have saved though ,went up a fraction early for it and it sailed over my head on my way down grrrrrrrrrrr. But i was never a goalkeeper my mate Steven Clark asked me to come there and try out as a GK because they had no GKs at that time,But i tried.

This has been given a good airing on ChitChat, but by the very nature of the thread it belongs in Ex Shrimpers now.

When I attended regularly Trevor Roberts was outstanding.
Having moved out of the area I only see the occasional Southend game, but an ex player, Glen Morris has been outstanding for Crawley and must be the best goalkeeper in league 2.
I never saw him play for Southend. How good was he when he played for SUFC.
