Bull crap. IMO, the club needs to take any money coming its way.
Exactly!

I don't give a monkeys arse whos shirt they are wearing money is money!

If fans of other teams such as West Ham, Spurs, Chelsea, Arsenal etc want to come down to The Hall to watch a bit of football I don't mind what-so-ever but I'd rather they didn't wear the shirts of the teams they support. At the end of the day though money is money no matter where it comes from. If we have to see a couple of Spurs shirts at the Hall thats not too bad seeing as they have had to pay to get in.

What a load of crap! Does it REALLY matter who comes and pays £16 into the club's funds and what they fecking wear? No, it doesn't. One could apply the same principle to the wearing of burberry and its association with hooliganism ...

Irrespective of what he got up to when he was alive, he is no longer here to defend himself, but members of his family are... where are the moderators, when you need them?
With respect mate - total b******s! We achieved what we did despite him not because of him and his bullish and down right arrogant attitude caused a few die-hard fans to walk away from the club and cost us many times more in potential future fans.

The fact that his is the only minutes silence I can recall not being respected at Roots Hall says a lot about the man - I and many other Southend fans were not unhappy to hear of his death. If that sounds cold-hearted then so be it!

Whilst I never wished any actual harm to Vic I must confess that during "his silence" I, and quite a few others, found myself in the west stand toilets.

That silence was badly respected!

Quote"If we got promoted our average gates would be smaller next season. "

I find this very hard to believe. We would be striving to acheive promotion to a really good league. There are a hell of alot more better supported teams in the division above. The level of away supporters over the course of a season would at the least double. And with a continued home support of around 5500+ i think our average gate would be atleast 1000 people more than this season. If we were just mid table going nowhere then maybe it would be around the 4500-5000 mark. Our average last year was around that and we finished in the bottom half of our league. you cant compare previous years attendances in those leagues because the club is now different. Anybody who honestly beleives we would only get 5-6000 average in the championship is mistaken.

Nothing untrue or defamatory has been posted, to my knowledge.
Not least because it's impossible to libel the dead. Unfortunately for dead people, you can say what you like about them and they can't sue you... because they're dead!

ghostface.gif

Of course, you need to be careful not to libel the estate (e.g. it may well be libellous to say "VJ's money came from his pimping & drug-running") - since the estate might then suffer loss of reputation, in that you might be suggesting that the assets within the estate had been obtained illegally.

However, even if it was untrue (e.g. "VJ was a coke-snorting whorer"), VJ cannot sue you for damages for libel / defamation, because he's dead - and that right to protect himself against defamation of his own character dies with him.

So, Matt, if I say 'Vic Jobson looked like Jabba the Hut but had fewer manners' it's OK?

But you can be sued for blasphemy which presumably equates to defamation of Jesus Christ even though he is dead/never existed in the first place depending on your point of view.

Not sure I "get" how gates would reduce if we went up next season. Common wisdom suggests that League 1 is a more "southern" league; and/or has bigger clubs in it with better away support. Teams coming to the Hall in League 1 with sizeable away support would presumably include:

*Gillingham (if relegated)
*Notts Forest (ditto)
*Cardiff (ditto)
*Luton (unless promoted)
*Sheff Wed (ditto)
*Hull (ditto)
*Brentford (ditto)
*Bristol City
*Bournemouth
*Swindon
*C********r
*Peterborough (unless relegated)
*Yeovil (presuming they're promoted)
*Swansea (ditto)

Whose big away contingents would we be missing out on if we went up? Orient, of course. Bristol Rovers, Oxford, Wycombe and Northampton too. But who else?

And think of all the travelling "armies" of Bury, Boston, Macclesfield, Rushden, Cheltenham and Kidderminster...

Of course, the ideal situation would be for Gillingham, Forest and one of Cardiff or Brighton to be relegated from the Championship; Tranmere, Hartlepool and Bradford to be promoted from League One; MK Dons, Stockport, Wrexham and Port Vale to be relegated from League One; and Yeovil, Swansea, us and Orient to be promoted from League Two.

We'd then get enormous gates next season, wouldn't we...?!

Because (I think) it's effectively defamation of the Monarch, since the Queen is the church in England & Wales...

Matt

P.S. Of course, even though I may say things like "you can't libel the dead" on here, you must not rely on what I say, and should instead take independent legal advice as to your rights and liabilities - not least because you may, in your comments, be defaming others.

And if you think I'm exaggerating on that, see the story in today's Metro about the guy who, following a pub quiz, posted on his website that the quiz-setter was a cheat... even though he subsequently removed that item from his website, a court found that he had defamed the quiz setter and ordered him to pay £5,000 damages and £12,500 costs.

So, I ain't kidding folks when I say:

*think before you post
*take a solicitor's advice before potentially incurring liability.

Matt

P.S. Of course, it should be remembered that if your statement is true, then that is a defence to a claim in defamation...

Hang on, I used to watch Spurs in early 90's, when I went to my first Southend game & I enjoyed it & its local for me - I end up as an Season Ticket holder for the last 4 season.

Try telling that to FM (an A***nal fans & an SUFC fans).

I would guess ORM thinks we would struggle in Div 3.

Its the old argument, you are better off fighting for promotion in the 4th, than fighting off relegation from the 3rd. Personally I think there is an element of truth in it.

Ah, I see that point.

Trouble is, there are no recent stats on the sort of gates we'd be likely to get in that division if we had a mid-tablish season.

Our last two visits to that level have been one-season stays, in 1990-91 - when we left via the right end of the table, and in 1997-8, when we left via the wrong end of the table...

The older stats (early 80s) don't really help, since the average crowd dynamic is pretty different now from how it was then...
