Obese kids 'not obese'

And on an aside, but perfectly relevant point, I was amazed to see good old Katie Price a while back on her documentary programme thing (not on out of my choice, I hasten to add), allowing her eldest son, who has loads of problems, not least of all his size, eating almost a whole packet of mini kievs and a pile of some sort of chips/smiley faces "because it's his favourite". So there you have it, someone who's made millions out of her own body yet she can't apply the basic rules to her own child who needs it more than she ever did.

Isn't this obesity epidemic natures way of killing off the underclass pikey scum swamping the country? And how come the parents need a letter???!!! Wouldn't you notice if little Beyonce or Tyrone were lardy bins?

I blame those cheap and nasty fried chicken places:

Southern Fried Chicken
Dixie Fried Chicken
Dallas Fried Chicken
Tasty Fried Chicken
Chick Stop

I also blame the man who came up with the idea of donner meat and chips.

I work in health care and deal with a lot of fat people, its not rocket science eat less krap and take a little excercise...........shock horror weight loss ensues, the trouble is that many people get sooooooooo lazy, parents need to start taking control and also setting a good example themselves, My son has strict time limits when on a computer/console then its off and he out over the park or in the garden BEING ACTIVE too many parents accept that their kids play x box all day while eating crisps/chocolate/fizzy drinks I see it every day, also why be so protective, teel the kid he/she is overweight and could lead to them being unhealthy etc in later life, why beat around the bush be up front and frank rather than pussy footing around

Not sure I like the tone of your post there, bordering on offensive.

What parents need is to take responsibility for their children from a young age, as Sam said earlier, and to lead them by example into sensible eating behaviours. They also need to spend time with their children rather than leaving the TV/computer/DVD to effectively babysit, and they also need to learn how to say "no" to their kids and to mean it. It is largely the parenting that's at fault.

I don't agree with what's being proposed here, what we need is to return to the old checks that were done at regular ages and which identify the correct percentile of growth for a child from birth onwards. The old school checks were ditched about 7 years ago I think, so where the health visitor would be seeing children she may have known from babies, in infant school and then at the beginning and end of the juniors no-one was keeping an eye on the trends in weight. Let's face it, parents who don't care about their children's excessive weight aren't exactly going to care about getting a letter.

Kids fall into two groups, those who think sport is cool and those who don't, and it all depends on where your friends are (unless you are absolutely brilliant at it) as to whether or not you keep it up.

To be honest it doesn't have to be an organised sport, two hours of runouts a night sure as hell burnt off that packet of spangles......

Walk to school, let them out to play 'till it gets dark and if your kids are fit enough they will be able to out run any Paedo should you be the overworrying type

Just reminded me of another Peep Show quote

It was old style paedoing. Before it got such a bad name.

I agree, I used to walk miles to school, but too many kids are over protected, even at senior school and taken to and from the door by car.

It does have lots to do with your friends though, you don't get too many Emos or Goths who are into sport, so other than your compulsory lessons, if that's what your friends are you aren't likely to be indulging in after school sports.

Posting that gave me an idea for an incentive campaign....

A survey today found that 78.3 % of Convicted Paedophiles targeted overweight Children,
The majority of those questioned (A sample was taken from convicted offenders currently serving their sentence in UK prisons) felt that the overweight child was more susceptible to inticement by cheap sweets, easier to grab hold of and less inclined or able to run away

True but the overweight thing is usually well on its way before they get into yoof culture.

surely you only become a Goth in the first because you are ridiculously skinny or absurdly fat anyway

Don't know, the ones I've known through friends' kids and my own have all been pretty normal sized. I think in both cases it's insecurities about something.

There are definitely family tendencies towards weight issues though, and unfortunately it is often those kids from the most difficult backgrounds which seem to live on a never ending diet of frozen rubbish or takeaways.

I just think the whole thing needs to be thought about a bit better, there's been this thinking for years now about not giving children "labels" because it's bad for their self esteem - calling them obese/fat/overweight is surely giving them a very definite label, and therefore is another case of an about face in relation to education.

If the legal age for smoking was reduced to (for arguments sake) five I bet there would be a lot fewer fat kids around.

1) force fat children to run on treadmills
2) connect treadmills to national grid
3) sit back as children get fitter and energy prices come down, all without any nasty carbon emissions.

that's what we call joined-up thinking.

As long as they're British treadmills..

BTW, I see Jimmy Carr made a decent joke...

Just hours after imposing a 35 per cent price hike on their cash-strapped customers, British Gas spent an exorbitant £25,000 entertaining 1,000 staff.
The personnel attended a conference in Birmingham, in order to train staff how to explain the huge price rises to customers. But the managers and sales advisers were treated to a champagne reception followed by a four-course meal complete with free wine and beer. The lavish dinner was complimented by entertainment and a free bar all night.
Jimmy Carr was a surprise guest at Birmingham's International Convention Centre, while Steve Ryder compered. Carr even reportedly joked about the price rises - saying he was going to put his fee up by 35 per cent in line with British Gas.

Its interesting how papers and websites report things these days. £25,000 mere hours after price rises does indeed seem "exorbitant". But then, between 1,000 staff that's only £25 per head. If this was a Christmas party, then you'd probably fork that out per person attending, so in actual fact it's not THAT much.

I know this is just a news worthy attempt to cash in on British Gas cashing in and drum up vitriol against them (not necessarily a bad thing agreed), but I just hate the way the facts are being distorted.

However, if I was Centrica I would seriously fire my marketing team.

"Hmmm... We've just put prices up. Again. By ********s this time. Do you think tomorrow would therefore be a good day to have a big party and publish our profit margins? Good - me too..."

I would be concerned about parents being satisfied that their child is "only" very overweight and not "obese"!!

This subject always really winds me up and not just the political correctness gone made element. There are so many factors, some interlinked, that contribute to this. In no particular order

Parents sheer bone idleness and ignorance
Food manufacturers overloading with wholly unnecessary additives
The lack of cheap natural fruit and veg - low income means budget buying which tends to mean cheap additive loaded c+ap.
When I was a kid a take away was a once a week (at most) treat
When I was a kid there were school dinners - not even a hint of bring your own and as for bringing ANY food or sweets in or leaving school premises during the day it just was NOT allowed
The lack of sport and exercise in schools now compared to 30 years back - and you won't get many volunteer teachers to push the extra curricular side any more (why has this happened? I'm guessing the me culture in current society.
The couch potato society leaving kids in front of computers all day snacking on sh!t.
The inability of some households to sit down as a family for a meal.

couch potato society.
