Post-Match Thread and Ratings Norwich City 2-1 Southend United

Its easy to say that but people said that after the Col U game- if we play like that we'll stay up etc. The starting formation was a mystery, hopefully the penny has dropped and he will play 4-4-2 but the truth remaisn if we dont improve defensivley we wont beat those teams we have left to play.

Eh?

Looked like 4-4-2 to me with Malone in left midfield and Scannell up front. I think that was the intention anyway... any deviance from that was probably due to the players not keeping their position rather than trying to play a strange formation.

Mildy 6
Francis 4 (keeps giving the ball away in stupid positions, unlucky with free kick though)
Malone 7
Barrett 7
Baldwin 7
Scannell 8
Moussa 6
Macca 9 (MOM)
Christophe 5 (sloppy and without passion)
Vernon 7
Paterson 6

Mvoto n/a
Herd 6

It was bloody heart breaking after such a good effort from players and fans alike. Macca's best performance this season I thought. My optimism is going down quicker than Jordan in an alley.

Can't agree with some of those... Francis had the best defensive display I've seen from him for some time, although I agree his distribution was occasionally poor. I also thought JFC showed plenty of commitment... they all did. And finally, Scannell put the cross in for the goal but didn't actually do much else, apart from pull away from a challenge that led to their winner.

Spot on with Macca though.

If you were there I wouldn't doubt what you saw.......however, listening to 'Player',the commentators seemed to think that he had a very good match.

Well here's mine got back too late (45mins getting out of multi-storey)
Everyone 9 no MOM they all were. Strange formation to start, I think It was 5-4-1
we invited them on too much in the first 10-15 mins and looked very shaky at times.
But then Mvoto's injury mean't we changed to 4-4-2, and all of a sudden it was a different game.
These lads, loanees, unpaid, or whatever gave 100% for the cause tonight.

Mildenhall 9. Came and took some good crosses, and punched a few too, as the conditions meant the ball was very slippery. Only slight criticism was for the first goal pushed it out to one of theirs unmarked a la MK dons.

Francis 9. Goog game for me. What does this guy have to do to score a free kick!
Good save by their goalie. Stopped a lot of crosses this time.

Mvoto no rating. as went off early, didn't see what caused the injury. Hope he recovers, and is not now to be plagued by injury for the rest of his career.

Baldwin 9. A very good, calm no-nonsense display. I like him, can we sign him permanent please.

Barrett 9. Wholehearted captain's diplay, a very good game with the exception of Grant Holt turning him once and getting a shot away that I thought had gone in, did very well.

Malone 9. Up against the step over kid in their winger, who did more stepovers than Ronaldo. But mostly Malone coped well.

Scannell 9. Apart from a couple of blind alley runs, gave them a few problems, and now he has two strikers in front of him who are moving off the ball, delivered some better crosses/passes, and got an assist for our goal (albeit deflected)

Moussa 9. Best match I've seen him play. Got stuck in. Covered every inch of a big pitch, and another that benefitted having strikers movement in front of him. I remember one very good pass that was 6 inches too strong from being our match winner set up for Vernon.

Macca 9. One wierd clearence that went out for a corner to them apart, I don't remember him putting a foot wrong, got in some good challenges, and one wayward shot from about 40 yards in the first half.

Jeff 9. Did everything that was asked and some protection for our eventual back four
got some timely tackles in too.

Vernon 9. Gave the Norwich back four plenty of problems, scored. I think the goalie almost got to it and it went up into the roof of the net. Intelligent movement.

Paterson 9. Please leave these two together Tilly, let them form a partnership, they will give defenses a lot worse than Norwichs' a lot of problems. Good intelligent movement. won fair share of headers, tireless.

Heard 9. Came on for Moussa in what was an attempt to shut up shop that didn't work. When Mousse went off we lost a bit of our attacking flair. And when we eventually got a throw in deep in their territory and the our fans (who you might just have heard on the radio) were calling for johnny heard to take it just threw it to the corner flag, when we should have loaded the box and try to 'win it'. This must have been an instruction. That worked then!

Fans 10, brilliant turn out considering our plight, and the weather, and car parks.
We hope you heard us !!!

Ref 8.5 very good display from the sub.

Lino our side 2. failed to see how he gave them a corner in the first, half the throw ins he gave to them which were ours, the ones he gave to them, he let them take 5 yards further up the pitch. and let the ref make decisions before putting his flag up. Rant over........

Brilliant display, good night, proud to be a shrimper, Tilly eventually got the tactics right. (please leave the front two together). Thought we could have won, let alone drawn but never should have lost! If we play like that till the end of the season, surely we won't go down....will we?

If you were there I wouldn't doubt what you saw.......however, listening to 'Player',the commentators seemed to think that he had a very good match.

3 times in the first 20 minutes he got caught on the ball and put our defence under pressure. He kept slicing the ball 40 yards straight up in the air. Kept playing passes into spaces where nobody was running instead of keeping it simple, for me he would be prime for dropping if we had any other viable option. Before people accuse me of being a knocker, I'm only saying what I perceive.

At MK Dons they obviously noticed how poor he looked because they swapped their wingers for the entire 2nd half, so that their best player could have a run at him.

Idid say that very thing after the Colchester, but to be fair we have been playing some of the top sides just lately, and i think playing better at that without getting the results we deserved. If Tilson can keep the players motovated, imo the results will come.

Not a game for giving individual ratings imo, the WHOLE TEAM were excellent as a unit.

Yes we did start 4-4-2 and even after the enforced sub we looked like every player knew what their job was, absolutely no complaints last night, I thought the ref was excellent until his huge error by adding 4 minutes on at the end, let's cut the we can't defend set pieces crap too please as we did defend them very well for 93 minutes !

If we can keep the same attitude for the rest of the season we will be more than safe, bring on Charlton !!!!!

Last nights defeat effected me more than any other result this season for some reason.

I had an arse of a journey up there, which included snow, sleet, sat nav breaking down and my oil light going off and I wasn't in the best mood for the game, but once inside the stadium with a coors inside me, I was bang up for the game.

We struggled early doors, and how their guys shot wide after turning Barrett, I'll never now but that, along with M'Voto going off seemed to wake us up. The passes that where going astray began to find feet. The second balls that Norwich picked up earlier on, we started picking them up. We started to play some lovely football in their half and defended like beavers (to knick a pharse from Soccer Saturday).

On the balance of play, a point would have been a fair result. They had their spells without hitting top gear, and we certainly had our spells. We took the lead with Vernon firing in after Doherty stopped Scannells' cross with his mid-drift allowing Vernon to finish very well.

They come out fighting in the second half, but the fans begun to turn on them with frustration and we still defended superbly. This was summed up by Macca tracking back covering Franics and winning a superb tackle on Holt (?) in the box. Malone, who I'm not a big fan of, played very well once shifted to left back. Baldwin was superb, Barrett was on his game and Francis, after a shaky first 10, performed very well at the back.

Mildenhall was unlucky with the first goal as he had pulled off a cracking save but Johnson fired home the rebound when we was caught on our toes.

As for the winner. What was that? 6th minute of stoppage time? Did the 4th official even show how long was left? Absolutely gutting. I was heartbroken. It was worse than being dumped.

I couldn't believe it. We outfought Norwich and deserved to take home and excellent point, but it wasn't to be.

If we carry that fight and determination into games when the pressure is on then we can stay up.

Keep the faith!

Indeed, exactly how I felt too. Just wanted the world to swallow me up. Felt lowest of low and it hurt more than any defeat this year.

I can take defeat normally, but yesterdays hurt. Alot. Ahh the joys of football, ay?

Fair play to the norwich fans though, I was meeting up with a couple of them after the game as I was staying with them, and whilst the gates were emptying plenty of fans come up to me saying things like;

"That is what you call an undeserved victory."
"I'd take a point in this match, if it means you'll survive come the end of the season."
"You were the better team for 89 minutes of the match, but 2 lapses in concentration and you blew it".
"Perform like that, with that level of passion and commitment in the coming games, and you will have no problem with survival."

Yesterdays game left me heartbroken. I never want to feel like that again! :'(

Unlucky Guys! To be honest NCFC didnt deserve anything from that game. We have been playing very poorly recently, but all teams have these 'ruts'. Playing how you did yesterday, im 110% sure youre going to survive the drop. Coming out of carrow road yesterday me and the people I was with actually felt sorry for Southend (although we were obviously delighted with the win!). I was impressed with your number 6 last night, he seemed to have Holt wrapped round his little finger. Hope you enjoyed your day despite the result and weather. Hope to see you fighting at the right end of league 1 next season!

Anyone seen the match highlights. Doesn't corrospond very much with what I heard.
................is this a correct summary? Apart from our goal it's all Norwich until they equalised and then they showed a couple of our attacks. Commentator of the opininion that Norwich got the victory they deserved ???

Poor defending from Norwich and a good finish from Vernon. Good work from Scannell to get the cross in.

Harsh on Mildenhall for the equaliser as he pulled off a good initial save.

Yet again poor defending for their winner, I think it's Vernon who Johnson lost.
