Post-Match Thread and Ratings Norwich City 2-1 Southend United

I no its painful would rather had been there instead of listening on the radio the attendance tonight was 20,000, but all credit goes to the non stop support from those who made the trip to Norwich right till the end

People have posted on this forum Im not going anymore this season to watch
us fall back into Div 2 its painfull - its up to them - but ill be there till the end and next season and the season onwards - sorry hooly you will have to put with with me for a while longer

i had a mild heart attack on the MK Dons home match and missed several games layed up in a hospital bed but i would have rather been at the game
supporting the team

there was 3/400 supporters there tonight who still belive that we can start to rise up the league lets get behind the boys on Friday night 100%

lets stop this constant whinging and moaning and get behind the team which we all love and support

Hope you feel better soon and get back to the Hall, Homer.

Mind you with the way things are at the moment, probably not the best place to be with a dodgy ticker ;)

Agree with the comments about 4-4-2 being played every game.

Patterson and Vernon upfront v Charlton please tilson.

ive been back for a little while now lost a little bit of weight and cut down on my beer intake only by 2/3 pints (real ale) and a big breakfast

while im still beathing ill be in my seat supporting Southend till i Die

Absolutly bloody gutted. Came away feeling we should have come away with at least a point. Outplayed Norwich for large portions of the game and we deserved more. How come this team is where they are in the league? Perform like that for the rest of the season and we will comfortably stay in this league. 9/10 for everyone, 10/10 for the support

Just got back

Best performance bar none all season

Maybe the pre match huddle did the trick, but from the start to the finish our commitment was top notch.

Some dodgy passes in the first 20 mins and I feared the worst, but when we went to 4 4 2 the silly errors mostly dried up and we got more into the game.

Second half more of the game and better chances and we should have buried them, they weren't playing well but that was because our commitment rattled them.

Special mentions to Macca and Scannell, but the whole team deserve credit.

I have become bored of Tilly's 'like I say we were unlucky' ditty's, but for once it really was true. However, the performance tonight can only give us heart, keep that up and the all too real the relegation fears we now have should soon ease.

Pre match I was seriously wondering whether I should just cut my losses re my tickets puchase and stay at home. Awful traffic and then sleet all the way up the A140 hardly helped, and it was just sheer stubbourness (and old habits die hard) that got us to Norwich, the rationale thinker (ok, the wife) would not have seen any logic in being there.

But unlike many many defeats in the past I am REALLY GLAD I was there. We sung our hearts out, showed the league leaders what commitment (and also in flashes some skill) was really about, and though the last second winner was a sickener I am proud to be a Shrimper after tonight.

I hate boring end of season mid table tedium anyway.

Roll on Friday.

Ditto, Support was superb.

I want to say gutted and poor SUFC but it just goes in that little file in my head as the should have, could have which is happening far to often.
At least we did not throw it all away five minutes into the second half like we normally do.

Er mate, whilst I understand appreciate the sentiment I think you could use a better phrase at the moment. Sounds a bit like tempting fate all things considered and I want you to be around next time I'm over for a visit! ;)

The results at the moment are painful enough with the buffer of thousands of miles, I can only imagine the agony of watching it happen before your very eyes. Whatever happens though we are Shrimpers through and through regardless of what division we're in and always will be!

Guys what can I say I am truly gutted for you (and us!), there I was celebrating like it was my team when Scotty Vernon scored and your boys sounded like they were playing very well. When they equalised I had a nagging feeling they would score again but at the 90th minute I thought your boys had done it, but the normal luck applied when you are up against all the odds and you left with a defeat. It sounded like the team spirit was back though so be proud of your team, it is Parky and Charlton up next they are on a wobble so you could do them!

Got an invite from some clients so was in the home end which was 'interesting'

- performance wise, well done to every one of them (though JFC continues to frustrate, why can a former premier league footballer not play a straight pass?). Macca and Scannell hassling and harrying them into mistakes throughout and Malone doing enough to keep their tricky right winger from creating too much. I wasn't overly enamoured when we signed Vernon but he's just what we need right now, an old pro to stick up top with one of the youngsters (442 with two strikers please Tilly!!!).

- Norwich looked poor, struggled to retain possession and couldnt see how they've been on such a run, though I doubt too many teams get stuck into them as much as we did.

- Norwich fans, what a moany bunch! 10 minutes in and they were on their backs, made me appreciate the solace of the East Greens! Well, almost. Didn't seem bothered that I was fairly clearly an away fan, managed to contain myself for the goal but was less able to contain my sighs and groans when JFC and Franno hoofed aimless balls or misplaced passes. Or when Scannell went into tunnel vision running mode. Of course, fickle as anything they're all going mental and loving it at the end while I'm sunk, head in hands in a sea of celebrating yellow and green. First time I've sat in the home end for an away game, not an experience I want to repeat in those circumstances!

- Southend fans, loud throughout, credit to the team. Well done guys. The team will need the support in the upcoming away games, especially as most of the remaining games are against lower placed teams.

Overall I was sick as the proverbial parrot, especially as it took ages to get out of the stand so had to stand there and listen to all the Canaries all happy while I just needed to share my pain. Post match curry was crap as well.

BUT, we need to build on this performance. My support has been somewhat lethargic lately, the flaccid 4-5-1 home performances sapping my enthusiasm and putting me firmly in the 'unsure about the ST next season' camp. But if we can raise our game like that for the remainder of the season we should stay up no problem and it will make a big difference to the number of bums on seats next year as I'm sure I'm not the only one having doubts after the gutless efforts of recent weeks.

Roll on Friday........

So gutted.
Journey 2 Went through blizzards rain sleet going rain and fog coming home and getting out of Norwich 1 what a terrible ground to get away from.
Team 10 Dont want to give individual marks as every one of them sweated blood and went the extra mile for the team last night. All petty arguments and trauma off the pitch seemed to be behind them and they seemed a tight unit. Well done to each and everyone of them. To see them on their knees at the end was heartbreaking.
Just hope Tilly can pick them up after that kick in the teeth even thought in the last 5 mins we looked like the only team who wanted it.
Officials 3 Linno in front of us did not have a clue just waited for the Norwich to ask and he gave it them also thought the ref was swayed by the crowd too many times and how they got away with the throw in in extra time I dont know went out at the corner flag and Norwich took it nearly at the halfway line.
We were the better team the wide pitch suited Scannell who looked a world beater again and his crosses were superb. Well done lads you really can hold your heads uphigh so proud of you

What a night.

Me and my mates were expecting a drubbing - as I'm sure we all were - and the first 20 mins were shaky and nervy.

Then the key moment for me - Mvoto went off.

Although we were already playing 4-4-2 (Malone in left midfield) the rejigged back four of Francis, Barrett, Baldwin and Malone suddenly looked solid and we looked like a TEAM.

Macca was fantastic all night. Anyone who thinks he isn't committed to the cause wants their head examined. Both he and JFC got under the skin and in the faces of their midfield opponents.

The goal wasn't exactly deserved but it wasn't against the run of play either.

In the second half, being fair, Norwich were clearly a far superior outfit and they never gave us a second on the ball. Every player they had wanted it and whilst that can be said of most of our lot, there were a couple of exceptions.

Scannell, for instance, bottled a 55/45 challenge on the halfway line which led to the move giving them the corners where they scored the winner. He simply wasn't brave enough and their guy was. We had the ball in their half for most of injury time - where the hell did 4 minutes come from with only 3 substitutions by the way? - and that moment of weakness is why he will not be given a new contract next season in my opinion. You cannot teach commitment - you either have it or you haven't. When it mattered, he let us down.

Aside from that, special mention to Baldwin and Vernon who don't play like loanees, both were superb all night, and as gutting as it was it surely bodes well for the rest of the season.

so gutted! Im not going to hear the end of this at university, I was just shaking off the Barrett/Colchester incident. 94th minute, ouch. If we can play like that against top of the league then we can do exactly the same to charlton on friday! we have the team to stay up!

We aint down yet, loads of games to go,if we can play like that against other teams i can see us picking the points up we need, but please Tilson 4 4 2 its the only formation that works for us.

Its easy to say that but people said that after the Col U game- if we play like that we'll stay up etc. The starting formation was a mystery, hopefully the penny has dropped and he will play 4-4-2 but the truth remaisn if we dont improve defensivley we wont beat those teams we have left to play.

Mildy 6
Francis 4 (keeps giving the ball away in stupid positions, unlucky with free kick though)
Malone 7
Barrett 7
Baldwin 7
Scannell 8
Moussa 6
Macca 9 (MOM)
Christophe 5 (sloppy and without passion)
Vernon 7
Paterson 6

Mvoto n/a
Herd 6

It was bloody heart breaking after such a good effort from players and fans alike. Macca's best performance this season I thought. My optimism is going down quicker than Jordan in an alley.

Thats the turning point.. we will start picking up points from here on in.. Journey up on the train was fine so the grim weather was irreevant.. had a lift home , had a couple of pints to mwait of rthe traffic to die down then was asleep before we got out of the car park so the, er grim weather was irrelevant.. Roll on friday...

To be fair to Tilly, it seemed as though he tried to match Norwich's formation, but they changed so we changed. Seems good tactical nous to me....
