I know theres quite a few NFL fans on here.

Everyone looking forward to the new season?

Anyone got any tips on who from the Draft will be worth a watch for this year???

I'm very much looking forward to it. I'm not sure my wife agrees, given that Sunday night TV in the Welham household will now be dominated by gridiron. Oh well.

All the talk over here has been Favre this and Favre that so the rookies havent had much of a mention. I didnt see too many pre-season games, but HBO did a series with the Cowboys training camp which was pretty interesting. Based on the 5 weeks worth of shows i saw of them their RB Felix Jones looks pretty good (even though he'll be spotting Marion Barber) and they have a TE who looks useful.. but probably wont break out this year.

Only other big story is Matt Ryan starting for the Falcons, but they will be terrible so its gonna be a rough season for him!!

What is it with you and egg shaped ball sports :thump:

You need some sense knocking in to you boy, I will speak to Lord Walker who will be sending the butler round to your gaff shortly to pinch your inner thigh with his sugar tongs.

Doubt you are interested in any offensive linemen, so that is the top pick and about 5 others first rounders down. First year QBs and WRs are rarely any good, although Flacco looks likely to start the season because of injury at QB for the Ravens, I think the only other first round QB pick was Ryan at Atlanta (good luck!) whilst no WRs were taken in the first. Cornerbacks often struggle in their rookie year as well.

The position you are most likely to get a rookie make a big impact is at running back. Derek McFadden is probably the most explosive prospect, but he's gone to a poor Oakland team. Otherwise I'd look out for the powerful Jonathan Stewart at Carolina, probably the most complete running back in this year's draft or the speedy Chris Johnson at Tennessee (a 4.2 second 40 yard dash is seriously good). Rashard Mendenhall could be another one to look out for, but I don't fancy the Steeler's offensive line. Dallas' RB Felix Jones is likely to share time and may make more impact at a punt/kick returner, as might CB Leodis McKelvin for Buffalo and WR DeSean Jackson for the Redskins.

On the other side of the ball Derrick Harvey for Jackonsville, maybe the most exciting defensive rookie, but he had a long holdout before signing which will hinder him. The likes of Glenn Dorsey (Kansas), Sedrick Ellis (New Orleans) and Vernon Gholston (Jets) are all very good players but maybe without the talent around them to make a massive impact.

Of the linebackers Jerrod Mayo (Pats) and Keith Rivers (Bengals) will probably slot in and do a nice job for the team rather than stand out.

Mind you, last year I said that the NY Giants were a poor team and they won the Superbowl, so you may want to take what I say with a pinch of salt. For the record, I expect the Giants to struggle again this season and may even finish bottom of the very competitive NFC East if QB Jason Campbell becomes consistent for the Redskins and the Phillie Eagles live up to their potential.

Very true. I did this quiz the other day (badly) and as you can see, although, two of the last four have been QBs, it's nearly always a RB who wins the Rookie of the Year (offense).

We've got McFadden as the 3/1 favourite to win ROY.

if its overall rookie of the year i wouldnt be surprised if it was Mayo at NE. Linebackers are always favourites for the defensive ROTY - and playing in the NE defense will give him lots of oppurtunity to shine.

Obviously deep down im hoping Matt Forte will win it smashing all of Peterson's (Vikings version) records of last year.
And Hester to win MVP.
Orton to win Comeback player of the year. Most of this has already happened on Madden09 when i smashed the Steelers in the Superbowl for my perfect season.

Ahh, Thats the beauty of the NFL though - The Draft. Poor teams get first dibs on the most promising youngsters so over time there is a gradual powershift.

Caught the Giants v Redskins highlights this morning. Quite handy NFL.com gives you some freebies!

I'm a big fan of the draft, that and the salary cap are amongst of the reasons I now watch more NFL than Premier$hite football. However poor teams remain poor if they are badly managed like the Raiders are. Without an offensive line blocking even the best of running backs are going to struggle. To be fair the Raider's line isn't as bad at run blocking as pass protection, and with an easyish schedule McFadden will probably have a decent year but if I was going to build a franchise I'd build it up front rather than on the sexy picks of a QB and a RB.

As for the Giants, I was pretty impressed - at least with their first half performance. Eli Manning actually looked quite good, linked up well with Plaxico Burress and the Giants' offensive and defensive lines looked very, very good.

Brady possibly out for the season. The Bills win 34-10. This could be the year the Bills get back in the play offs.
Go Bills!

The Bengals had a shocker losing to a rookie coach and QB at the Ravens.

When half your punt returns go for negative yardage, when you allow a rookie QB to rush 38 yards unopposed for a TD whose previous longest rush was 25 yards, when your strength is offense and you score 3 offensive points with your pro-bowl QB throwing 10/25 for 1 INT and no TD and your RB grinds out 37 yards in 18 attempts you know its going to be a long season waiting for that top 5 pick.

The big surprise to me is the Bears comfortably beating the Colts. Presumably Peyton Manning was a bit rusty having missed the entire pre-season, but it seems to be the running game that hurt them as Manning racked up over 250 yards in the air, whilst Bear's rookie RB Matt Forte picked up 123 yards.

This was the sunday night game - and the Bears looked good.... (save for the first snap Orton took which he fumbled - that had me worried).
Manning didnt look comfortable all night, the commentators just felt he didnt look comfortable with new linemen and no pre season. That said the Bears defense looked back to their old selves, putting pressure on the qtrback, getting a couple of sacks (which happens rarely with the colts) and even a safety.

Matt Forte looked pretty good, strong in the run and a burst of quickness... not saying he is going to be an allstar, but definately an upgrade. Orton "managed" the game and didnt have too many risky throws...... with the fact we now having a decent running back it opened the passing game up a little.

Definately not going to get carried away, but im much more confident of the bears having a good season now than i was 24 hours ago. Just need to keep injury free !!!

The Broncos game against the Raiders on Monday night was awesome. The Broncos tore them apart all game long. I'm trying not to get too excited however, since at this point the question is are the Broncos really good, or are the Raiders really just awful. The answer probably lies somewhere in between. Plenty of positives from the game, Jay Cutler looked sharp, and Andre Hall looks like he might be a very effective running back. But that all pales in comparison with the play of rookie wideout Eddie Royal. Him and Cutler look like they already have a formed a good partnership, and with Cutler's favorite target from last season, Brandon Marshall, returning from suspension this week, the Broncos might just have one of the best passing offenses in the NFL this year. Of course, the Broncos success this year will be decided on the other side of the ball, if they can't stop the run again this year, they will likely miss out on the post season once again.

great start for the Eagles, although I'm not sure (not being overly well-informed about these things) how much of it was down to the Rams being poor- they looked pretty ropey on the highlights. If McNabb has got over his consistency issues and Westbrook stays fit, we should at least be scoring at quite a regular rate.

Bills 20 Jags 16

Bills 2 and 0

Go Bills.

I happen to be in Florida in October, just when the Bills visit the Dolphins.

Anyone been to a Dolphin game? Do they have crowd segregation there?
