My new way of thinking - SUFC wise

I'm sorry, but I really don't agree.

OK, my use of the word decent might be arguable but we could put out a team that shouldn't disgrace themselves.

Not my first choice obviously but we'd be able to field 11 experienced players in positions they've played in more than once for us, and fill the bench with enough players to enable all positions to be covered somehow.

Mildenhall
Herd Barratt Francis Sankofa
Moussa JFC Macca Betsy
Barnard Freedman

Joyce, Revell, Grant, Laurent, O'Keefe

Please don't get me wrong; in my opinion we need new blood at LB, CB, and LM. But we need to ensure that anyone we bring in is better than those above.

Fair enough, but we need two more subs - Tilly and the kit man?

No-one is saying we don't need to strengthen the squad by 2 or 3 players. What we're saying is that there is no need to panic in doing so.

One essential arrival is a tall centre half and we will have one by the time we kick off.

However, if necessary we can play Barrett and Francis in the middle with Sankofa right back and Herd left back.

In fact, swap Barrett for Clarke and that is the back four we played against Northampton on boxing day when we won 1-0.

A midfield of Betsy, Macca, JFC and Moussa is not too shabby at all and we have Scannell and Walker who can come in as well. They may have knocks now but they'll probably be fit come August 8th.

Up front we have Barney, Freedman, Laurent, Revell plus Scannell and Walker who can play there as well.

Come on people for Gods sake this is not a bad nucleus of a team we have here. If this was August 7th I agree it's not ideal but Dervite came in at a days notice and look at the immediate effect he had.

Lets face it - 9 of our probable starting 11 we already have so the team knows each other pretty well. It's only one or two players to slot in rather than 5 or 6 as per last year.

THINGS ARE NOT THAT DESPERATE!

Spot on fbm, all this doom-mongering is getting right on my tits tbh.

HAVE A LITTLE BIT OF FAITH FOLKS!!

I forgot Grant as well in midfield. Plus the youngsters of O'Keefe and Calver with maybe Hazell too.

We're better off than we think - but I agree we do need strength at the back and I'm sure come kick off v Huddersfield we'll have a big CB and a new LB as well.

Absolutely spot on, but there really is nothing like a bit of pre-season panicking, so I'm going to panic just for the hell of it.

Well I wish I shared your confidence.

Rusty, do you (or anyone else for that matter) seriously seriously SERIOUSLY believe that when 3 o'clock on August 8th arrives we will not have a replacement centre half?

If Tilly hasn't signed a permanent player or long term loanee in that position by August 7th he will get a short term loanee in.

If he is making a decision on a decent permanent player he is going to have to make sure he gets (as far as possible) the RIGHT player. This takes time and involves not just diving in on the first player to become available. the deal has to be right both ways.

What I don't get is exactly why people DON'T think it will all be ok come kick off.

I firmly believe that we will have a replacement centre half by the time we kick off against Huddersfield. My worry is that we will have signed him the night before on a short-term loan.

To give a bit of balance to the discussion, the squad at the moment is pretty similar to the one that was staring a relegation place in the face minus our player of the year. This was just before Dervitte and Robinson came in.

I say don't judge anything until the whistle signals KO of the first game of the season. Lack of movement is always disappointing but it's something most of us are surely used to?!
Fingers crossed something happens soon. Until then be positive.

with most of our strikers injured.

Just looking back through it, the bad run started end of October and stretched until beginning of February and in every game we always had two of:

Freedman
Barnard
Walker
Laurent
Revell

Maybe but it was constant chopping and changing. We never had a consistent partnership until Robinson came in and played most of the time with Barney and they both scored goals.

Who was our best keeper last season, i think Fredric. Best centre Stanback, not many would argue with Dervite. Best left back, no doubt Harding. Best passing mid fielder, again a poll would most prob name Sawer. Best wide player Stanislas, sorry if i have spelt that wrong, but you no who i mean, and finish of Robinson poss our best forward, although if someone said Barnard i would not argue with them. My point is i doubt any of these players will be turning out for Southend this season,so what are we left with, minus our player of the year of course. Well a side that struggled last season, and imo will again this term, unless ST works the oracole in the lone market again, but the clocks ticking.
