My Dutch southend united flag

The end of the eredivisie season was really tight! It was basically upto three teams, psv, az and ajax. Az had the best position and just needed to win from Excelsior (who where in the relegation play offs no matter what they do) but they couldnt win agains Excelsior.

This gave room for Ajax to win against Willem II but Ajax kept screwing up while PSV where winning at their game!

Psv became champions again and to show their thanks they have been visiting Excelsior play off matches to say Thanks :)

Just for the record to, Ive had a bad season! Southend, Ado Den Haag relegated! Fc Eindhoven finished second from bottom but cannot relegate as there is only two professional leagues in the Netherlands! So no one can call me a glory hunter

I thought in Dutch 3rd Division only the winner from their play-off match can go up ..... Lucky old FC Eindhoven! If you have time machine, FC Eindhoven used to have a great side between 50's & 60's bit like Blackpool FC.

The KNVB requires all professional teams to play on sunday and some teams refuse to do this because they are either religious and dont believe in working on sundays or they just prefer saturday football. I dont see why these teams could not promote because the first division teams always play on a friday night, but for eredivisie I do agree with them having to play on sunday simply because of european games.

If relegation does happen (there have been talks about it) then I really fear for Fc Eindhovens future as they hardly have any money as it is. Season tickets are at an all time low (350 last season) and with loss after loss, fans will hardly come back, favouring PSV.

Cor, I went to Scheveningen on holiday when I was a kid. Is that poncy hotel the Krauhaus still there? Ah, happy days!

If you're going to be out there long-term why not think about joining the SUFC Exiles?

Blimey, I weren't the only one then. When I went there, there was some weird massive sandcastle competition going on.
But we stayed at a friends house in Mellistokelaan in the Hague.

Ah .... FC Eindhoven ?

Nostalgia alert !

Saw Southend play at the Jan Louwers Stadion in a pre-season friendly in, I think, 1973. Can't remember the score but I recall it was a "competitive" match and there was a sending off (in those days you had to work hard at getting sent off). Small ground, quite quaint, set amongst woodlands and difficult to find.

In a bid to remind myself of the score (which I think may have been a draw) I checked the foreign opposition section of Potted Shrimps and it's not there ! Strange! Either Messrs Goody & Miles are re-writing history, 1984-style, or I'm going completely mad. No not possible; I remember searching for the ground and resorting to the tactic of going to the station and finding people buying or looking at English papers so we could have a sensible conversation!

To be fair, it's still possible that you're going mad. And two months of "Eastwood set to sign for (insert average Championship team here)" may well be enough to push you over the edge.

the Exiles .... our sponsored player has only gone

:D

Wasn't that part of the Exiles' curse?

Its not just the Exiles who are cursed, its also Shrimperzone. I wouldn't go as far as to say Mark Gower has had a blinding season, but its certainly been an acceptable season, which is more than can be said for Shrimperzone sponsored Simon Francis.

I still say sponsoring a bluebelle is the way forward. Anyone interested in doing so, drop me a PM.

I know this has already been covered, but i asked Dave if he could solve the mystery and here is his reply...

Hi Lee,

4th August 1973 – Volendam (away) Lost 2-3 (Guthrie, Booth)

5th August 1973 – Eindhoven (Away) Lost 1-2 (Johnson)

When we wrote Potted Shrimps, we hadn’t had the time to research all the friendlies & Testimonials, so we went with what we knew at the time. That list in Potted Shrimps will certainly need updating now.

Cheers,

Dave

Thanks for finding out that result (will surely go on my Fc Eindhoven website!).

Excelsior have now managed to stay up (after a draw at home against rbc, winning on away goals), so I am now preparing myself to buy two season tickets!

I plan to go to a southend away game for sure next season! I will let drop you lot a line here if you wanna meet up with some of the Dutch :D.

Tot ziens!
