Musicians that "lost their way"....

That got me thinking about my record collection and , with the possible exception of The Jams Setting Sons I don't think I have got a great Album which is past anyones 3rd release (maybe Green Day but as I "discovered" them so late on I bought them totally out of sequence and almost all in one go)

The 2nd Album has always been a sticking point and often bands don't recover from a poor 2nd Album

Green Day....American Idiot was a straight marketing ploy, nothing to do with musical credability at all..(saying that, there are a cpl of good tunes on it)

China Drum(they supported GD on their 1994 Uktour) had two great lp's, then went up their own arse by changing their name to 'the Drum' and went all loops, samples and remix's...what a waste.

which then leads me to, Ian Dury...'new boots and panties' was a classic lp of the time...after that..?

Morning Chaps,

Musicians that lost their way?
Hmmm, you could make a case for pretty much all of them.
The only ones I can think of that didn't **** it all up are Captain Beefheart and Kurt Cobain and only because Beefheart was a one off and Cobain topped himself before he had the chance to lose it.

Oh, Climie Fisher, Shaky and Phil Collins of course, nothing but genius all the way there...
And Max Bygraves.
Ha Ha. No, but seriously, I'm insane.

Kind Regards

good point, i often wonder at what point Nirvana would have 'lost it'. Although I think early Foo's were equally as good.

Ian Dury - Well, that was his third album, he released two under his guise as Kilburn and the High Roads. NBAP was the first one with the Blockheads.

Do It Yourself, the next one, was a gold record, and included my favourite single - Inbetweenies. The one after, Laughter, was OK - still a silver record, though.

After that, they had a bit of a downfall - but resurrected marvellously with
Mr. Love Pants in 1998, a classic, and Ten More Turnips From The Tip - Ian Dury & The Blockheads (posthumous, 2002)

The Stones did quite a few albums before a duff one.

Sly Stone.
Went from being a funk behemoth with what was undoubtedly the best hair of any musician ever, to a frazzled coked up mash of gubbins, with really **** 80's ringlet-style hair, living on benefit in some kind of council housing for the addled and confused.

Hmmm... depends what you make of ("the sprawling classic") 'Sandinista,' the 4th album of "the only band that matters," as NME used to say about The Clash when I were a nipper...

yes, i am aware of the Kilburn projects...and i actually prefer nbap, so there fore, I didbt think he'd got worse on that point.

a bit like Jor strummer and the 101ers..they were a diiferent style of music like Killies..ie pub rock.

I liked Kylie Minogue when she was an unpretentious pop princess but when she was repackaged as a credible artist, I really went off her. Artistically. I went off the idea of ruining her when she got ill. But now, I would again. So swings and roundabouts really.

The Manics

Yes, completely agree. Compare the raw genius of the early stuff with the sad parody they've become.

Bit ironic quoting Noel Gallagher's lyrics when speaking about musicians who've lost their way but I think he summed it up with -

'Please don't put your life in the hands, of a Rock & Roll band, they'll throw it all away.'

It would be easier to talk about bands and musicians who haven't lost the plot over an extended period of time. I'd suggest Primal Scream who've stayed true to themselves over their whole career...any other suggestions?

I don't think the Manics lost their way, they just lost their guitarist

Nobody mentioned U2 yet?

Used to quite like them up to, and including Rattle and Hum, but after that they just became, well, rubbish.
