Musicians that "lost their way"....

MK Shrimper

Striker
Listening to a bit of Rod circa early 1970's and it's superb. Since about 1976 or so he's just sheee-ite.

So I give you the following who lost it big stylee.

Rod Stewart.
Stevie Wonder.

Any more?

A bit recent here, but The Killers... Hot Fuss is one of, if not the best album of the decade. Sam's Town is downright awful.

Also, Oasis haven't released anything worthy of mention since Morning Glory.

Aren't they their first two albums though? A bit harsh on them when the thread was begun by mentioning someone with 30+ years in the business as a solo artist. "Second album syndrome" is a fairly common ailment anyway.

I'd perhaps nominate REM but that's also perhaps a bit harsh as they had to deal with losing 25% of the band just when they were beginning to recover some form.

Indeed. x 1000.

I'd argue Morrissey too, but then I never really liked the Smiths that much.

Finger hovering precariously over the neg rep button!

Weller may have made some ****e post The Jam, but Wild Wood & Stanley Road are up there without a shadow. And not liking the Smiths! Lost. For. Words!

I always like to throw a bit of Smiths-hating into the fire. Gets everyone worked up! Just never really got them myself.

Critics often say that Radiohead are whiny, miserable rubbish but most people generally love the Smiths. Hello?!?!?! His voice is what puts me off. Songwriting wise I think they're great...

Others you could add to this list:

Lou Reed (later years has been dire)
Mike Skinner / Dizzee Rascal
Bee Gees
Prince
The Fall between 2000 and 2007 (until this years record got good again)
