money meltdown !!!!

but having considered it further, I go back to my point that it works for income tax, however for local services it is far more likely that the 10k worker can;t afford books so uses the library, can't afford decent gym so uses council facilities, surely flat rate per adult is even unfair, but only acceptable solution

Well actually more to do with you pay sod all in tax really , and more in back handers allegedly .

Now, I'm not justifying those who pay no tax (In otherwords the lefties idols who stay at home all day).

But - the guy who earns £1m and generates jobs for many - so what if he pays an effective rate of 20% rather than 40%? He has still contributed 200k, which pays for 10 public sector workers.

The **** who stays at home drains from society and moans about him :madman:

Why shouldn't people on benefits also pay?

would imagine their benefits are already taken into account?

indeed its a very complex issue, finding the fairest system to suit everyone is near on impossible.

last 10 years the council tax has virtually trebled which cannot continue.

I agree that the trebling is unacceptable given that wage inflation is nowhere near that, so there is no reason for that level of increase. Ripping off those more fortunate is not how to address the problem though - surely cost control is the solution?

Might want to change the spelling there - I assume you do mean those who are idle rather than one who is idolised, or is that Freudian?

FWIW, I thought the poll tax was a brilliant idea but completely mishandled. I think our whole taxation, benefits and rates systems need an overhaul, the 40% mark is no longer a marker of "wealth" in taxation.

and I think we need to review the female vote!!! ;) just kidding of course...

You're right about the overhaul, it says somehting when 40% taxpayers are still eligible for child tax credits up to another £20k of earnings!

As for idol, I was actually referring to the undeserved high status that the lefties seem to be placing on those who refuse to work - shamefully I didn't even see the potential for punning!

That's because you're not in the SZone Punbase! It's right though, like this initiative for kids in college to get EMA "funding", how fair is it that some get it but others don't? Explain to my son, why most of his friends do, but he doesn't and that he's not going to get it from home as his father's a skinflint.

Not sure where you get that from? Yes, the lazy aristocrats born into wealth but most trade unions would back a return to apprenticeships and training schemes but it's the owners of companies who won't put their hands in their pockets to fund them. For example my 17yr old nephew was recently made redundant through no fault of his own literally just weeks before he would have been protected by the law. He was doing a woodworking apprenticeship and working bloody harder than I did when I was 17 - and now he's tossed on the scrap heap and now has no motivation.

but it's the owners of companies who won't put their hands in their pockets to fund them

Perhaps they cant afford it. Funding an employee is expensive. Training one even more so. You could easily fin yourself in a position where you fund someones training for 3 or 4 years, then they qualify and leave. Its easy to assume a Company owner is rich - thats not always the case.

On the other hand if a company invests in it's employees then perhaps those employees won't be so mercenary and jump ship at the first opportunity?

I work with many people who did British Rail apprenticeships who are still working on the railway some of them now nearing retirement.

Do they have many alternatives though? Ford Motor used to do fantastic apprenticeships which were considered among the best in the World. After 5 years, the apprentices all left and went to work for other companies who paid more money.

Its a tricky one, and I agree paying the right money to keep your employees is important but as I said before, employing someone these days is expensive and if you want to get rid of someone its very difficult, whereas an employee can just quit and walk away leaving you in the lurch.

Another serious effect of the current financial crisis will follow on soon, when all the people badly affected, i.e Estate Agents, removal firms, Construction workers,Car Salesman etc etc, wont have any money to spend, which in turn will affect hundreds of other business'. The futures gloomy and opportunities for training will be almost non existent.

i know a brickie who was earning 50k per year, his accountant managed to get the brickies tax bill down to around 3k per year or £60 per week from nearly a grand is not sad.

I bet he spent all his free time moaning about how the country was going to rack and ruin as well.

cheers mate.

steveo,

water metres are good and very soon every dwelling will have one installed.

the more you earn the greater the tax,its the way its worked for a very long time.

low paid persons need as much help they can get,so if people earn very decent wages they should contribute more.

If all you had was a metre of water, you wouldn't need a meter.
