Post-Match Thread and Ratings Millwall 2-0 Southend United

There is wrong on both parts here

1. Having a go at Mildenhall is just plain crazy.
2. I do think he needed to be a bit more professional about it.

It was painful, I really didn't think it could get worse than the Wycombe game but it did.

The most frustrating thing was that Millwall were another very average side and we made them look good.

The only time the 4-5-1 has worked was against a poor looking Orient side and we only just got through that. For that formation to work you need a big lump up front and two pacey wingers with the ability to beat a man and put in a cross either side of him which we obviously don't have.

I feel sorry for Paterson, he must wonder what the hell he's come into. Give Spencer a start with him and lets see what both of them can do.

Mildenhall 5 - Kicking was woeful, when he had to ball in his hands he looked to release it early then didn't and let the whole Millwall side get there shape back and then hit a hopeless punt and we lost the 50/50.

Sankofa 4 - Usually I think he comes in for a bit of unfair criticism but I cannot defend him after last night, skinned every time and scuffed every attempted clearance.

Barrett 5 - Had a couple of runs into the Millwall half but no one was up in support for him to do anything with it. Backs off his man far too much.

Francis 5 - Won a few headers but his distribution was shocking. Has to be back at RB as we have no attacking threat with him at CB.

Malone 6 - Pick of a poor back four but it still wasn't a great performance from him, he also joined in with everyone scuffing a clearance.

Scannell 4 - Got himself involved in a couple of unnecessary spats with Craig, really struggle to think of anything else he done.

JFC 4 - Fantastic at breaking up the play - and then giving it straight back again, don't think he completed a pass to a yellow shirt the whole game. His second half performance was laughable.

Grant 5 - Couple of good tackles and I actually think he should have been sent off for the tackle he was booked for, it was two footed and over the top of the ball, I'd be very unhappy if that was the other way round and it only warranted a yellow.

McCormack 5 - Bit of energy and got stuck in but another needless booking.

Moussa 5 - Any time he got forward with the ball, once again there was no one up and we ended up losing possession.

Paterson 5 - I feel really sorry for the bloke, when he signed he said he likes to get the ball into feet and run the channels, so, we stick him up from on his Sweeney and lump high hopeful balls up to him.

Subs -

O'Keefe 6 -Was quite impressed with him, only player in a yellow shirt that looked like he wanted to be out there. Reminded me a little of Sawyer.

Freedman 5 - Left wing ?

Spencer 5 - Give the lad a start, the game was gone by the time he came on but he brought a bit of pace and energy on with him.

Morning all, my first ever post, though I have watched from afar for a long, long time!

Thought that we competed very well for the first half of the game. Millwall did not look the threat that I thought they would, we coped and had a couple of half chances ourselves.

The 'foul/off side' goal was a killer though until the second goal went in I thought we were still in it.

As for our players, we are a very small squad with very limited resources. Defensively we need a commanding centre back and we are lacking an attacking midfielder who can 'pick a pass'.

I am a huge admirer of Mr Tilson, and believe that he has worked miracles over the years, but with the players we now have, we have to start playing a more attacking 4-4-2.

Good first post and welcome to the board mate.

Thank you. I like to think that I am a 'levelled headed' sort of guy, so will always give you my honest opinion. I do not expect miracles by the team, because we just do not have the money to give us better options. As long as they go out and give 100% then we as fans need to be happy (or as happy as we can be).

Thought Malone was pretty solid last night and O'Keefe got stuck in when he came on. Paterson is obviously a 'ball player' and sticking him up front on his own completely wrong! Think he and Spencer together needs to be tried.

I am sure Tilly is looking for a dominating CB, this is where we need to strengthen, a good commanding CB and I am sure we will stop shipping soft goals, because last night, both goals were very, very soft.

Perhaps Macca's suspension will force Tilly to go 4-4-2, and also put Moussa in the middle where he might be capable of picking a pass.

If we presume Osei is unwell, how about we line up thus:

.......................Mildenhall......................

Malone.......Francis........Barrett........Herd

Grant.........JFC.............Moussa.......Laurent

.................Paterson......Spencer..............

At least that way, we might actually score. A 4-3 win is better than a 0-0!

Matt

By the way, the comments about Francis returning to RB are spot on. We need him essentially being our winger too if we're going to score right now it'd appear...

We were awful last night just terrible the only player to come out with some dignity is OKeefe. I spent £50 last night on what? just crap football.

Ok the ref and lino was poor but we hardly attacked there goal and the we gave the ball away for there second. Barrett was being roasted all night by there new striker.

Tilson didnt change anything. If were going to play 4-5-1 we need to have 2 decent supporting midfielders on the wing i would play laurent and walker with pattinson or specener up top. scannel was dredfull and so unfit but the team is crap and the only person to blame is Ron. For lack of investment when a club is going backwards we have to look at the hierachy and who is in charge of that. We are too close to the relegation zone and i cant see us winning are next few games with the fixtures we have.

Like i said to you on Saturday after the game, where i ain't got a job i just can't afford to pay that kind of money out, to watch a gutless, undesirable performance.

Its not often I am lost for words, but last night I was. That performance was simply unacceptable. There was no fight, no desire, no ambition. It was just 11 blokes going through the motions. And that was Millwall. We were worse.

I could pick so many holes in individual performances, I'd probably run out of space.

Patterson was getting barracked in only his second game, remember guys he is here for 2 and a bit years. JFC did absolutely nothing. Malone is out of his depth. Sankofa is similarly out his depth. Grant and Moussa are not even half the players they were a few months ago. We appear to have no money to improve things, so this is what we have.

For the first time since the dark days of Vic Jobson, I am really angry about what I am seeing. I don't mind seeing a poor Southend team (I've seen plenty), but we should not be in this position. We should not be selling our leading scorer and replacing him with a 19 year old. We should not be accepting offers for Francis, for whom we have no replacement and are currently relying on midfielders or loaness to cover the defence.

We look like a team ready for relegation. There is always someone who falls down the table after Christmas, and I sadly think it is us this year. We have been desperate for an injection of flair and creativity all season, and the solution apparantly appears to sell the only bloke who had any idea what do with the ball when in front of goal. We are desperate for defenders who know how to defend, and our response is to seek to off load a fairly decent right back. We now desperately need for Tilson, once again, to weave his magic in the loan market.

The coming few months really worry me.

Moussa has been part of a 3 man central midfield for several games Matt and has looked awful. Grant cost us last night, and if it were down to me I'd definitely have O'Keefe in. He looked our best midfielder all night, and I'd keep Jeff in - he was at least winning the ball.

Probably because he only has one striker infront of him instead of two. 5 across midfield can be crowded, and with no forward passes on (i.e. The striker is usually marked) it's no surprise he can't get into the game. He's out of form, but I think Tilly is right to persevere and hopefully Moussa will play his way back into form.

Id look at going back to 442 with scannell-moussa-jeff-grant across the middle and laurent alongside paterson
