Post-Match Thread and Ratings Millwall 2-0 Southend United

Tilly's comments on BBC

Tough place to go
Officials poor
A foul & offside for their goal
Cant fault commitment
Boys doing a man's job
Call at 12.30 re Laurent felt hamstring
Sankofa not well during game
Plugging holes & using stop-gaps
Felling sorry for lads as they are giving everything
Cant do anything more
Ask lads to keep going
Not easy to get people in
Still searching for players
Need to be realistic
Some he wants cant get in
Tough as it
In it together need to pull together

Alliker picked up on the use by Tilly of the "can't do anything more" line as at the end he almost used it again & basically NA thought Tilly was saying "literally" there was nothing he could do about the situation.

Worrying times.

Well where do you start?

No-one played well. No-one. I'd give maybe Malone a 6 for being ok first half and at least trying second. And Paterson had nothing to work with but ran a lot first 45 before getting sick of every pass missing him by 15 feet.

Osei was terrible. So terrible Tilly subbed him at half time. Yes... THAT bad.

Francis and Barrett were terrible too, getting in each others way, wasting every pass forward and hoofing it high EVERY time.

And for a 5 man midfield, why didn't we ever have the ball? No one was any good. Two yards late, too heavy with every lay off. Special mention must go to Scannell who was spectacularly awful. Conference level awful. He didn't track back once (leaving Francis covering him and the inept Osei at times), didn't take anyone on and at times actually turned away from goal and ran towards the sidelines.

Everyone has a bad game. Everyone deserves a chance. But the guy is still two days off the pace and not a League One professional.

When the second went in we bought on Freedman and Spencer. Neither did much right or wrong but did both at least look to pass to feet. Osei was replaced by O'Keefe who also deserves a 6 for effort and venturing forward. He tired and not much came off for him but he had a pop.

But having a pop didn't seem on our agenda tonight. Neither did passing the ball to each other. Or defending. Or tackling. Or talking to each other. We've forgotten the basics and look like a poor League Two side right now.

Both of their goals were utter gifts. The first from lazy defending, waiting for the offside that never came (rightly or wrongly). The second we actually played it to their feet from a throw in, failed to track back - hi again Damien - and that was that. Mildy didn't have much chance with either but even his distribution and area commanding was fraught with indecision.

We're in trouble. Not just of playing bad football or scoring goals, but doing the basics well. The ref didn't lose that game for us, or an injury to a player.

That was an abject performance from a team, and fanbase, short on ideas, ability and confidence. And we're going to be in a relegation scrap in 2 weeks time unless Tilly performs a(nother) miracle.

Malone / Paterson / O'Keefe - 6
Everyone else - 4 or 5
Except you Scannell. I've saved that 3 for you...

To be fair Tilly said in the post match interview that Sankofa was not well. Perhaps he only started as we had nobody else or felt ill during the half.

If Osei was ill, then that'd explain a lot. However I question why we didn't have Herd in instead at left back and Malone at right? Osei was 2 yards from the nearest man or the ball all night.

But what positions those guys were playing in baffled me. We need to put our best players in our best positions and work around then. We need to bridge the gap between the back and front. We need a disciplined holding midfielder to cover. And we need to get on that practice ground tomorrow, relearning the basics and remembering how to talk to one another.

It was just kinda sad to see us out classed in every department. Millwall were far from spectacular just a solid committed team running rings around our dire performance.

Malone is a 6 for a couple of nice moves
thought Spencer and O'Keefe both lifted the team and done ok 6 too
everyone else is a 4 or under I can't be bothered to go into it all.

I was sat in the home end but I was still yelling at JFC for his countless **** ups in the second half, absolutley dire.

Millwall is a tough place to go but it could/should have been 5-0 we were that poor we deserved nothing more.

I got a text from a mate at the game saying the second was Grants fault. Once again we lose and some people who dont like certain players have to blame them such as Scannell. Seany if you dont like him then fair enough but dont blame a conceeded goal on him when its not his fault, i.e Grant.

Think Grant had a half decent game but yes he gave it away for the second goal.

On the bright side I thought O'Keefe had a good game when he came on and certainly made a difference. Perhaps Tilly should give him a run in the side now possibly instead of Moussa who at the moment looks way off the pace and lightweight.

He does give another option which is something I think we're certainly lacking, but as Tilly said Boys doing a Man's Job him and Moussa a bit on the young side.

like you said though, I think he made a difference too.
