Michael Jackson Dies

Don't be sad Kay, our own Gary Glitter is still with us and Jonathan King will be putting out a new track next month.

Musically not on the same playing field though, or is that a bad choice of a phrase? Funny, though, how them two are much older and both proven guilty........

No matter what people thought about his personal life he was a musical genius and there will never be another like him.

R.I.P

As someone as said on here, some of the comments after his death have been way over the top. "The day the music died", King of pop etc etc.

While IMO Jackson is an important artist, and albums such as Thriller were groundbreaking, but he isn't a patch on many of the "greats" of music. Anyone who saw Bruce Springsteen at Glastonbury last night can surely testify to that.

Absolutely bang on, Harry! So inspired by The Boss that it got me writing 'Dancing In The Dark' (cf 'In A Broken Dream' thread) in the early hours of this morning

Being serious for a moment, was anyone actually shocked?

The bloke was clearly not in the best of health, his face was falling apart, he was neurotic and almost certainly had been pumping himself full of drugs every day for over a decade to the extent that his best friend was a chimpanzee. I don't think anyone actually believed that those concerts he arranged were anything other than a loan as there was no way he was going to be physically able to perform them all.

But the media coverage has been full of idiots saying they were shocked. Why? Did you really think he was healthy?

Anyway, he was a great musician and performer 20+ years ago. In some sense the tragedy was that he didn't die Marc Bolan style driving himself into a tree when in his prime and that we instead got to see the car-crash of his later life.

OK, back to the jokes and amusing pictures please.
You've summed up my own reaction perfectly. Learning of Jacko's passing was a surreal moment, not least because I was enjoying a night out with work colleagues and the atmosphere fell totally flat after that, but I wasn't ultimately shocked by the news at all. He's looked frail for years and has been totally out of the loop pop music wise for nearly a decade.

yeah Senna and Peel are the two that definitely upset me. Marc-Vivien Foe stands out as well (least of all because of the haunting images of him being stretched off)
Yep, definitely agree on all three. I'd also add Richard Whiteley and Kirsty MacColl to the list. Whiteley was a cult legend and someone I assumed would still be presenting Countdown in his 80s. I was genuinely saddened by his death. In fact, if you'd told me just beforehand that neither he nor Carol Vorderman would be fronting Countdown within five years I would have said you were bonkers.

As for MacColl, she may not have been a celebrity but it was still a shock to hear she'd died, and given the circumstances it just brings home how suddenly you can be wiped from the face of the earth. It also made me wonder how on earth she'd been outlived by Shane McGowan.

I went to one of those Pogues Xmas gigs at The Academy a couple of years ago and there were leaflets circulated about the 'Justice for Kirsty' campaign. Seems that there was some nefarious stuff going on with the owner of the boat scapegoating an employee of his for the accident...

Kirsty was killed by a rich Mexican playboy who was jet-skiing in an area that was roped off for swimmers only and as yet, due to his status, he's evaded arrest. Sickening.

Jacko was quality there is no doubt and he deserves to be ranked up there with the greats.

I must say, i saw Bruce Springsteen at Glasto on Sat night and he was absolutely awesome! Well worth staying up till 12.45am to watch.

I understand he did 3 hours at Hyde Park on Sunday also!
My god he has some energy!
