Matt Harrold - Why all the slating?

I agree with this up to a point. The trouble is that the obsessive slating of one player on message-boards will inevitably affect the more easily influenced of our support. So, on match day, a misplaced pass by Harrold will not be greeted with a groan but often with a: "**** off Harrold! You're ****ing useless!"

These message boards are absolutely for analysis, positive and negative, but this Harrold obsession has mutated into something more unpleasant than that.

I can't subscribe to this theory, there are hundreds of Southend supporters who probably don't even know these boards exist, and I can assure you that huge numbers of those are berating Harrold every time he gets the ball with no influence from anything said on here. Where I sat on Saturday we had quite a lot of old gents around us and they were probably the worst I've heard. At least in South lower the support is largely encouraging.

Yes there will be lots of supporters who don't use the boards but the chances are they will sit near someone who does. If you don't believe the effect the board can have just remember the number of people who turned up in hawaiian shirts to mark the Goat's last game. It started off on a thread and grew. Word of mouth is still the most powerful influence.

That was promoted elsewhere. I wasn't on these boards then but I read about it either on the website, the Echo or in programmes (can't remember which now).

Everyone knows my feelings on Matt Harrold and some of the stick he gets is well over the top. I thought he played quite well Vs Dag & Red, during his spell on the pitch we scored 3 goals, 1 of which he set up.

The idea started and evolved on here. Most people knew of it thru word of mouth and it was always going to be done whether the club made it official or not. It wasn't till a short while before that SUFC made it official and the idea had been around for weeks before. There's no denying that ShrimperZone has a huge effect through word of mouth on SUFC supporters.

Certainly is. I always make a point of telling the people around me of the latest topics.
