Matt Harrold - Why all the slating?

Personally I think Harrold's been given lots of opportunities and not made the most of them. I do think his confidence is largely shot, and what he needs is to go out on loan and rebuild it away from the boo boys (hasten to add I have never and will never boo one of our own despite comments I make on sites like this). A personal opinion, that's all.

I have to say that despite his mediocre display yesterday, he received a good applause when substituted so i feel this continued reference to 'boo boys', especially in relation to yesterdays game, is unjustified.

The lay off to Morgan looked pretty sweet on TV. And he seemed to be heavily involved in the goal build up where Francis found the net

Are you sure that wasn't the last echoes of clapping from the goal scored just as the substitution was about to be made?!

I'd love for the lad to come good, local boy and all that but I really think he needs a spell away from Southend to gain some confidence.

Poor Matt is not the best in the team by a long shot. He does try hard but unfortunately his best is nowhere near what is required for a League 1 striker.

Thought he did OK yesterday but even against a League 2 defence he was never going to score.

With Harrold up front we are far too static. When Hooper came on we were much more livelier up front and actually started to exert some pressure on Dagenhams back line because we had two strikers running at them. All Harrold does, unfortunately, is slow us down and then we become very predictable. I don't dislike Harrold as I think he genuinely tries. However I don't think he will make it here at Southend.

As I have said in another thread, he is off to Shrewsbury if he can agree terms.

Hope it works out well for him.

This is just much the same debate we had last year about BadBuy. Many people couldn't see what he brought to the team, but the statistics show that we did better with him playing, as we do with Harrold (or hopefully Fallon).

from what i've been told he had a decent enough game yesterday but still no goal threat what so ever and thats against a struggling league 2 side. personally you can't fault the guys effort and drive but his record is not good enough in my book. all for a striker to bring over players into the game and hold up play etc but striker are judged on goals. something harrold can't do.

I thought Matt Harrold had a reasonable game yesterday and fulfilled the role he was asked to do.

Against a poor Bristol Rovers team with Morgan and Macdonald up front we had no one to link up midfield and attack. Harrold perfomed that role yesterday with a number of headers and also with a number of flicks and short passes - as with Morgan's equaliser.

Its far too simplistic to base a forwards performance purely in the goals they score. If the TEAM scores more goals when they are playing than when he is not then they are playing a positive role.

I agree that long term we need a replacement for him but at the moment he is the only player we have that can hold the ball up and bring others into play.

Matt puts in lots of effort and sets up a few goals but unfortunatley he doesn't even look like scoring a goal. He is a decent sub though as long as Tilly will give him enough time on the pitch and not with 5 minutes to go. On the other hand Leon did score alot more goals when Harrold was up there with him...

I'd rather lose Hooper than Harrold. Harrold's awareness of other players around him is excellent, someone said to me yesterday he's got more assists than almost any other player this season, and nobody can deny he was good for Leon Clarke. That said, I'd rather see Rory Fallon up there.

get real - he's useless.

an uninterested leon clarke is still miles better than a huff and puff harrold

Spot on, what is all this protect Harrold crap. He has had more chances than anyone to prove that he is up to it and he aint. Poor touch, heading and movement, do we want to progress or not as League 2 beckons with lightweights like him!

As Fallon is signing tomorrow then luckily we wont have to worry about it anymore.

Harrold created one of the goals well and did a couple of nice lay offs other than that he was ****ing ****! Hardly good enough to be our first, second, third or forth choice striker.
