Post-Match Thread and Ratings Maidenhead United 1-0 Southend United

Well if that was the “reaction” to last weekend’s embarrassing result, then we might as well all pack up and come back in August.

This goes beyond bad days at the office etc. It looks like there’s far too many bang average players that don’t give a **** and/or are suffering a hangover from the Rat era. If we don’t find a way to “mutually agree” the termination of a number of these players contracts, then next season isn’t going to be much better either. No more sentiment, they have to go I’m afraid, as sad as that may be.

We still haven’t solved our goalscoring issues either. Frankly bar Bim, the recruitment of strikers has been especially **** poor. Yes the embargo proper done us regards Pearce etc, but Jesus there’s not one of our “strikers” I’d be that bothered about departing. No excuses this summer though, sign someone who can at the very least hit a barn door.

A managers job is to set direction, the target outcomes and expectations..

Their job is to set up the team for success. To continually learn, adapt and change based on results, learning and progress data.

Motivate the team and individuals to perform. A team is never perfect so it's their job to coach them, make the most of them and focus on their strengths or regrettably move them on if they aren't a good fit. Sometimes you have people that have excelled elsewhere and by applying them in a different role does not mean they will always be successful

To be on top of the data and be informed by this data (not necessarily to make decisions based purely on the data - human experience and intuition is still important).

They are also accountable for results otherwise their job should also be in question and given a period of time to achieve certain outcomes or visible change to a better outcome.

Now let's apply this to football and to football managers....

Sentiment is a powerful human emotion which is connected to memories and an emotional connection to the person or thing.

This explains a lot and I certainly don't think less of people that are supporters who favour sentiment.. Personally I don't suffer from sentiment.

For this reason,.when I scorecard Maher on his job performance it would mostly be fail.

For this reason, assuming that our ambition, objective and desire is to create a product that customers enjoy, that drives revenue and more importantly recurring LTV (long or life time value) customer revenue and also raise the company to new levels of potential revenue and success - I would say that we collectively are failing.

I therefore am and have been for some time in favour of a management and leadership change. No emotion or emotional reaction. My view is based on the decisions, product and output.

The reasoning for failure seems to lack vulnerability of failure.

If COSU really are of a commercial mind and experience then they will appreciate this too. The problem may well be battling a commercial mind v a personal money spending scenario. It's very different when you're spending your own money versus someone else's in business.

Do you know who Colin Murray is Stu?
no idea who is he. is he the Rangers man who is a part of COSU . If it is then that tells me that not all of COSU believe Maher is the right man for the job. And seriously Mahers constant failures is going to cost COSU more in the long run that paying him off and bringing in a new Manager, going to cost them in STH sales and falling attendances ,shirt sales etc ewtc etc .

Delusion or denial? Either way KM is the main culprit here and Maherball is as useful as stinging nettles for wiping your backside. Four strikers used today, all the managers recruits, and he takes them to the Gordon Connelly School for Scorers. The supporters are turning against KM in their droves and still he reels off stats as facts without saying just how many of our chances are next to useless, feeble and blocked. Let's have the stats for the season of how many saves we force opposition keepers to make.

He talks of positives and togetherness but, neither are evident. We are asked to play poor football and it will not get us anywhere. For God's sake let the players show what they can do and play to their strengths and not prolong the folly of the managers clueless, inept tactics.

The vast majority of fans would still love KM to be the one that takes us forward, myself included, but he takes our hopes and faith and evaporates them with this constant cr#p. Change or go.

No. No he isn't.

Took 4 non supporting friends yesterday and all of them said the same thing, they think they'd see better football on a Sunday league team. They were all asking how does Coker actually get paid to play football he can't even control a simple pass. They got bored and went for a beer and missed the goal lucky for them lol. The lads day out in pubs before and after as always was the best part of the day as the football is always the one to let the day down!

On the train on the way home it kicked off when we got to Slough with a load of Maidstone fans. Didn't even realise we had a rivalry with this lot! Was quite a nasty looking scrap

All those going on about "let's wait until Maher gets a chance to bring in his players over the summer".

I believe yesterday only 2 of the players that started, Ralph and Coker, weren't his signings.

I've had enough of this "yeah, but he missed out on his top targets' - you never get a chance to sign all your top targets and stop going on about Olly Pearce - even he would struggle in this style of play.

It doesn't matter who Maher brings in over the summer, it will not change this style of football he's dishing out!

SOUTHEND United boss Kevin Maher admits he understands the frustration of the fans following Saturday’s 1-0 defeat at Maidenhead.

But the Shrimpers head coach has stressed the club must stick together to get back on track.

A second half header from Magpies defender Will De Havilland condemned Blues to a disappointing setback at York Road.

However, Maher still believes there are signs of positivity from his players – despite the criticism coming his way.

“I understand the frustration and I'm the outlet for it now again,” said the Shrimpers boss.

“Six months ago we nearly didn't have a football club and when the results don't go well the manager takes it.

“That’s fine but we're doing a lot right.

"The squad is stronger but we've got to turn performances into wins.

"We've got to keep working hard and stick together.

"If we do that it will change."

Blues – who were beaten by Sittingbourne in the FA Trophy last weekend - are now 12th in the table, six points below the play-off places.

And Maher felt Southend paid the price for not being clinical enough in the final third against the Magpies.

"We're trying and we're creating chances believe it or not if you look at the stats and data on where we have the ball” said Maher.

"But it's that final moment we've got to get right.

“We had 15 attempts at goal, it was 20 something last week but we’ve come away with no goals and that’s not good enough.

“You can dominate a game as much as you want but you’ve got to get it right in both boxes.”

However, the Shrimpers were also unable to shut out the opposition.

“When you don’t score you put yourself under pressure to keep a clean sheet,” said Maher.

“It was the same as last week, we haven’t taken our chances and a set piece, which looks a foul on Harry (Taylor) watching it back, has cost us.

“But that’s what you lead yourself open to when you don’t take your chances.” Blues will now bid to bounce back at home to Halifax Town on Tuesday.

And Maher still has belief in his players.

"We've shown we can do it and we've been on good form,” said Maher.

“If you get the result today then you really are looking up.

"It's something the team has get to get better at, it's those moments.

"There's a bit more pressure this year which you've got to deal with and that's football.

"But we're looking for the characters to stand up at the right moments and do that."

The Shrimpers were unable to do that against Maidenhead.

And Maher seemed disappointed with Blues’ reaction to going a goal down.

"We spoke about it and we came off the structure a bit,” said the Shrimpers head coach.

"You can feel the lads' confidence drain a little bit.

"That's when you have to use your calm heads and wait for the moment to create a proper chance.

"We still did that but it was a little bit disjointed and there were some bad decisions after that sometimes."

However, Maher still thought there were enough opportunities for Blues to have avoided defeat.

"I think we slashed at things too much in and around the box but at the same time we had some great chances,” said Maher.

"We hit the crossbar and the keeper made a good save from Gus (Scott-Morriss) in the first half.

"So many balls went across the ball in the first half and in the second half Hops (Tom Hopper) has had a chance and Macca (Bonne) has too.

"You’re away from home at a tough place you dominate the game and create that many chances but you don’t win.

“That’s the frustrating thing.

"We just didn't have that moment of quality to take a chance or that coldness you need in front of goal.

We've got to get ourselves together and go again on Tuesday."

He must be looking at the wrong stats. Passing the ball backwards and sideways when under no pressure in your own half does no way count as 'dominating the game' in my mind.

Can't remember what exactly; might have been a England game and Henderson's passing stats - but it was like a 99% success rate. However it was always passed about 10 yards to a player next to them - even I could get high stats doing that!

Stats etc is ok, but you have to have data around it

I experienced it first hand and told to **** off for daring to criticise Maher. I’ve missed two games all season. The fans are turning for sure
I understand everyone in football is entitled to their opinions, personally I completely agree with you and Maher needs criticizing as again yesterday there was no in game tactical changes, all subs again were like for like, and after the first 10-15 minutes Maidenhead dealt with everything we had to offer, maybe some fans are happy with these performances and will clap them whatever.

Two losses in a week to part timers- time for a change. We can't score and we can't defend.

We are being out worked by a bunch of part timers.

I have been supportive of Kev for a long time but I think his time is up.
Done by a set piece yet again, 8 useless corners after over a dozen useless corners v Sittingbourne
