Let's get off Harry's back !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

To be fair ACU, there are plenty of 'Slag Matt Harrold Off' Thread's where people are defending him, so a little balance is fine by me :)

What balance, RC? The criticism of MH is, IMHO of course, unbalanced and not justified by the facts. CC51DAS started this thread specifically for people to comment on the positives - and it has been promptly hijacked. I don't think there is any reasoning over the MH issue, and I frankly have given up hope of seeing any balanced debate on the issue. I won't be boycotting SZ, but at the moment I think I have better things to do with my time.

But if people are entitled to their opinions about MH, and entitled to promote them in strong and straightforward terms, then I think I am entitled to say this. football fans tend to get the team they deserve, and I think that the sort of treatment handed out to Paynter, Harrold, Gower, to name but three, this season, is unlikely to encourage our better players to hang around, new players to sign, our (often undervalued) management team to turn down offers from other clubs, and probably the best Chairman we have had in living memory to continue to invest in the club as opposed to asset stripping it.

In my opinion, Harrold just isn't liked by some people on here, and Roots Hall. He could score 20 goals this season, win the FA Cup with an overhead kick for us, and win England Euro 2008 (If we qualify) but some people still wouldn't like him.

On saturday, when Harrold tried to stand the ball up to the back post (the right thing to do) and it went out of play the abuse he got was horrific. I defended him in East Reds but not many people would listen. 2nd half, we are on the counter and MacDonald does exactly the same thing, sticks it behind the goal, but the people around me rather than slag off MacDonald like they did with Harrold, they slagged off Tilson because MacDonald "wouldn't have done that if he started".

There lies the big difference. Two strikers do exactly the same thing, one is a "****ing giner ****, I hope he dies" and the other "Wouldn't have done that if he started". It was disgusting.

Some "fans" need to take a long hard look at themselves when they wish death on a Southend United player. I was disgusted and defended Harrold to the end, but no one would listen.

And I thought the Harrold-abuse was bad where I sat. God knows what he's done to deserve comments like that. :p

I had a similar thing at Cardiff (LDV Final 2) when I got a little bit frustrated with Maher and although not loud enough for the players to hear, was offered outside by a couple of knuckleheads pretending to be Southend fans!

Clearly, they did not believe in the validity of your opinion! :p
These people should not be let out on day release, let alone be allowed to go to a football game!

Possibly your best post on here ever mate!

Thank you sir. Its pretty obvious on here I am a Matt Harrold fan, and I accept some people will never see strikers as something other than goalscorers (or not in Harrolds case) but wishing death upon him is disgusting.

I don't know anyone that'd wish death upon a footballer (or, in fact, anyone!) simply because he doesn't like him. These people are a disgrace.

He is an enigma. He did 2 sublime touches one which led to one of the best goals I've seen at RH in a long time. On the other hand he never looks like scoring even when he's in good positions and hardly won a header on Saturday. However those "fans" (and I use the term very very loosely) need to appreciate in Vic Jobson's phrase that there are 91 other league clubs to support. I had words too before moving away from the fat ****, with a man sitting in front of me. Why oh why do these people who clearly have never kicked a ball in anger in their lives and would have a seizure if they ran for a bus think that other fans want to listen to 90 minutes of their drivel. Blue Voice is the way forward. Let the moaners have their designated part of the ground. I suggest the car park and those who want to support the team go to West Block V

I encourage people to get on his back even more now... let's hound him out of the club yeah?

Harrold was getting abused before he'd even kicked a ball. His signing was immediately questioned, even after scoring v West Brom on one of his first sub appearances and changing the Norwich game he didn't receive any praise from his critics.

The sad thing is that he's going to be a good player at this level. In fact he's already a good player at this level, but with experience he's going to be even better. When - its no longer a case of if - our so-called supporters drive him out of the club there will be plenty of clubs willing to take him on. Sadly his confidence is shot. You could see that he no longer wanted to be out on the pitch being abused, as when Tilly went to make his first sub he started running to the touchline.

If he returns with another club to Roots Hall he'll give our defence a torrid time, but our fans will no doubt reckon that he played **** despite the fact that he'll inevitably guide his new team to victory.

If I recall Ian Benjamin didn't score all that many goals. He made a huge amount for Brett Angell though, and as a partnership they were pretty awsome. When Angell left and we had just Benji, he was pretty mediocre to say the least.

It is not every striker's job to score goals, just like it's not everyone defenders job to stop the ball on the line. It is a team game, and getting the balance right is what counts. I posted on another thread that it was interesting that Clarke's goals have dried up since Maher has been out of the team, but it also coincided with Harrold being dropped in favour of Hooper, meaning that Clarke had to take on the "Harrold" role. Maybe Clarke needs someone like Harrold to pull defenders out of position and create space for him, as Benji did for Angell.

We often said last season that Eastwood should not be dropped because, even when he is playing badly, he has the potential to score, and if a player plays badly, but scores every game then he is worth his place in the team. The same can be said of a players that set up chances for others. I'm not saying this is the case, but if Harrold were to set up chances every game, then he would be worth his place in the side regardless of his actual scoring record.

For what it's worth I neither like nor dislike Harrold. I recognise the amount of hard work he gets through. I see the amount of times he holds the ball up and creates space for, and brings others into play. I also notice his seeming inablility to get the ball out from under his feet when in a goalscoring position. All this makes him a very frustrating player to watch, but one I would certainly persevere with. Most of his inability to score at the moment (IMO) is a lack of confidence, and if the boo boys gave him some space I reckon he will come good. Sadly I can't see him being given enough time.

Top post, and I thought the same thing re the McDonald blast high and not so-handsome. Although I likened it to the stick Billy Paynter received from his very first touch of blasting it over the same South Bank bar. Some players are destined for 'stick' I'm afraid - Matt Harrold, Billy Paynter, and some never recive it - McDonald being the latest of that line, which included the inept Mark Rawle.

Or alternatively, they'll be reams of posts like there were about why we let Kightly leave!

I really like Ciderspace the Yeovil fan's website. Here's their take on their fans.
Sounds eerily familiar.

A Bluffers Guide to Communication at Huish Park You've read the Ciderspace Bluffers Guide to Huish Park fans, now understand what it is they're actually saying... What are they on about? Huge Huish Hugh is at hand to decipher the true meaning behind some of those words of wisdom uttered around the ground, and help make sure you fit in. It's got nil-nil written all over it.
We're cr*p. They're cr*p. It's cold. I wish I was anywhere else but here.
Oi! Fry! Get your chequebook out!
We haven't bought a player for a fortnight.
Refereee!!
Response to anything done by the man or woman in black not considered worthy of a torrent of abuse.
**** *** you ****.
Everything else the referee does.
Offside!
To be yelled every time the opposition cross the half-way line.
You're 'aving a larf, lino.
Use anytime the flag is raised when fewer than seven of your side are less than five yards offside.
Unlucky!
The terrace favourite is the only one of the twenty-two players in their half, stationary ball at his feet, two yards out from the centre of goal. He blasts it over. [As in: Unlucky Dazza!]
You couldn't hit a barn door.
The terrace whipping-boy throws himself full length at a ball fizzing across at mach 4, gets concussion from a size 12 straight in the face, breaks an arm, the ball ricochets off both posts and the bar and is scrambled off the line. He gets up and carries on. [As in: You couldn't hit a barn door, Pablo.]
N.B. It is important you get these the right way round. Any mistake and you'll find the entire ground staring at you in disdainful silence.
Off! Off! Off!
An opposition player has made a tackle.
Penalty!
Any of your team's players trips over in, or in vaguely close proximity to, the box.
Was that in the box?
If anyone needs to ask........ it wasn't.
Get a ****ing sub on, manager.
You're 1-0 down.
Get that ****ing sub on NOW, you w**ker!
You've gone another goal down.
Too bl**dy late, Thompson.
A third has gone in.
OoooooooohhhhhhhhhHHHHHHH!!!!!
Uttered by small boys and a few other cognoscenti of the beautiful game from behind the goal when the opposing keeper takes a kick.
You're sh*t, aaarrrggghhhHH!
Added to the above by small boys who have checked that their Dad has already sloped off early to join the queue for a Bovril before half-time.
She fell o-ver.
Use when an opposition player has been decapitated.
Animal! Bl**dy animal! (Alternating with "Off, off, off!.)
Use when an opposition player has helped your star striker to his feet after he has fallen over.
He mistimed that one.
One of your team, probably Milesy, has run thirty yards across the pitch to unleash a head high drop-kick at an opponent.
He's only in the side cuz he's the manager's son.......
Obviously this was reserved for Lee for four years. The little cliques that used it were appalled when Gary Johnson left. Sorry to lose Yeovil's best ever manager? Nah, it had screwed up their favourite catcall.
Fair play to the boy...........
This must always be followed by a "BUT".
He's more a positional playmaker these days.
Of an old favourite who hasn't been able to run faster than your Great Auntie for years.
Come ON, buck you're ideas up...... ("....... you ****ing waste of space" is a purely optional addition for added emphasis).
To be directed at any player in your team who hasn't scored a better goal than Michael Owen's World Cup effort in the previous two and a half minutes.
Get Gally On!
It has escaped my mind that I was having a go at him last week and telling the manager to sell him.
Get Gally Off! He's crap!
During the last 10 minutes I've not seen Kevin beat eight players and chip the goalie from 40 yards. He's losing it badly.
Our defence are so crap today. They couldn't tackle a five-year-old.
Rose is at left-back again.
Our defence are so crap today. They're all over the shop.
No one is at left-back.
TALK TO 'IM!
Directed towards our keeper at thirty second intervals.
I was just [insert from a wide range of excuses for not watching at that particular second]. Who got it?
Uttered by 90% of the crowd to the other 10% every time a goal is scored.
We couldn't score if we played into next week.
Usually true.
There's only one team going to go on and win from here.
Spoken by ex-England managers, and countless lesser mortals on the terraces, after their team has been encamped in the opposition penalty area for fifteen minutes............. about thirty seconds before the visitors break away and score.
Eeyore, eeyore.
Appropriate for any trivial mistake made by either side.
SHOOT!!
One of your team has possession in their half.
CLOSE 'IM DOWN!
One of their team has possession in your half.
You're all a ****ing disgrace.
To be used at any time your team is not leading by at least four clear goals.
We deserved it.
At the end of any match won.
We deserved it really.
At the end of any match lost.
If anyone deserved it, it was us.
At the end of any match drawn.
We were playing 12 men today.
The referee has sent three of their players off, awarded you four penalties and disallowed five of their "goals" but they still won 1-0.
I've paid my money.(Said with a look of triumphant smugness.)
Standard response when someone gets fed up with your constant moaning and whinging and tells you to shut it.
Right, that's it, I've had enough of this sh*t!
It's 4-4 in the Championship decider with 5 minutes to go but I want to get out of the car park early.
C'mon Yeovil, this lot are sh*t!
Yes, and we're losing to them, so what does that make us ?
Don't know why I bl**din' bother.
I'll be back next week to support the lads. See ya.
How to fill in half-time with a conversation :

Don't say: What colour are we?
Do say: Its the best/worst [according to aesthetic judgement] strip we've had since 1992. (You're quite safe. Apart from that totally hideous Ars*nal black and yellow effort and the fact that England wore red in the 1966 Final no fan in Britain can remember any kit older than last year's).
Don't say: I'm only here because my Sky dish fell off the wall and the engineers can't get round until Monday.
Do say: I hate those arm-chair Premier****e followers.
Don't say: I think David Beckham is unfairly treated by opposition fans, don't you?
Do say: I wonder if that Posh Spice really does take it up the ........
Don't say: It was nice to hear those jolly fellows down the other end singing in the first half. I thought they were louder than us.
Do join in: It's nice to know you're here, it's nice to know you're here, etc., ........... now F*CK OFF!
Then it's on to the next 45, and a chance to hone those ever fresh phrases to perfection.

My views exactly. When will some people learn that giving these young guys abuse will never improve the team's performance. I personally have no time at all for Lewis Hunt but try to keep my frustration in him to the ocassional quiet scream through clenched teeth. I'm far more likely to shout "Get into him Lewis", or "Forward pleeeease Lewis", than any abuse.

And I might be quietly pleased if Tilson subs off a player that I think hasn't had a good game; but to cheer and whoop, as some in the East Stand Yellows did) when a player gets subbed is stupid.

It's even more stupid of course when they get it wrong and end up cheering as one of their favourites (presumably only because they can shout Mooooosa at him, as he's been complete innefectual since making the first team) is actually subbed an not MH as they all thought :)

Absolutely. I agree it's frustrating and Matt Harrold is not a great player but he's giving his all, and if Tilson chooses to play him then let's encourage him.

The poor guy was desperate to get off when the first sub was made, his confidence is in pieces. I was really saddened to see the vitriol directed to him on Sat.

If it carries on like this he will probably look for a move.

Let's get behind him please people.

I'd love to know if any of the players lurk on here and witness some of the absolute drivel some people speak about them, particularly those more brainless posters who've not kicked a ball in anger in their lives.

I was reading an interesting article about Morecambe's preparation for their first game as a league club & their coach (ex Man City striker Mark Lillis) got them to write on a flipchart, the things they could control about their own performance & the things that were out of their hands. One of the items written down about things they can't control was "Internet Message Boards", therefore I'd suggest they do check sites like here from time to time.

Other than this thread, probably the last positive things said about Matty Harrold were when the girl he took to the Centenary Ball was analysed!

I dont think anyone in the right mind would claim Harrold to be a good stiker.

He is lacking in pace, dosent look like scoring from open play and seems to me to be a bit slow of foot.

I would however say he runs his tits off for the team, I think his touch and general hold up play are good and his ability to take a battering make him a decent player.

You also cannot argue with his current form of a goal and an assist in his past two games. For that alone he deserves to be playing.

I personally hope Leon and Dean Morgan become out first choice attack as both seem to be intelligent players but Harrold deserves to be in pole position at the moment.

Those who have a problem with his selection would be better advised moaning about Tilly for keep picking him than Harrold who clearly is going to play if picked.

Below is something I wrote earlier on the "Wiggy's rating's" thread, it will fit just as well in here.

I didn't go to the game on Saturday. and had not read any report or spoken to anyone about the game prior to logging in yesterday afternoon, all I knew was the score, and the order the goals were scored. The 1st thread that greeted me when I logged in yesterday was Wiggy's thread, so I thought I would have a guess at Wiggy's rating for Collis, before opening the thread. Guess what, I was spot on ! After seeing that and the thread about Harrold, I just gave up ! Some people really need to think about the damage that they can do to our team, before they post such spiteful and vitriolic rubbish. We've already lost one striker due to this, whose performances since he left have proved that he was far, far better than some of the knuckle-dragging neanderthals who post on here argued.

It appears from reading the posts on this thread, that Harrold was subjected to the same sort of abuse that Paynter received during the Cardiff game last year, if that's so, then we have more brainless idiots supporting our club than I thought.
