Lee Sawyer on Bluesworld

Dont see why we cant get Sawyer. He is a class act but lets face it he needs game and with a young family probably wants to be close to his home. We can offer both of these things which i think will be a massive pull.

Cant see him wanting to go back to 200 crowds in Chelsea reserves and being a bit part player having been a big player for us. Class act but is he going to start in the championship for a bigger club....? Not yet in my book.

Some very good and valid points there Dave couldn't agree more and I didn't think about any of those before I posted my post.

I feel quite hopeful of signing him now.

Not too bothered about Federici, I'd happily stick with the cheaper options of Joyce & Masters backing up Mildenhall.

Sawyer & Christophe signing would be fabulous but I still can't see Sawyer signing.

I think that Fed would easily be the best keeper we have ever had and to not be bothered about him would be foolish

No problems signing Feds.............just find out who his best footballing mate is in Australia and bring him in......the rest is easy!
Look, I live up a mountain, a thousand kms away from the action and what do I know? It does, however, occur to me that some people on here are even higher than I am. As much as I would love it I just cannot see someone being groomed to take the No.1 spot at Reading.......giving up that chance, to join us.
I've listened twice to Sawyer's interview and i'm afraid, much as I would wish it, I didn't hear very much to justify such a confident headline. Young Mr. Sawyer doesn't have a great way with words and probably prefers to let his boots do the talking but from what I can infer he has enjoyed his time with us but will consider all of his options in January......thus, we can hope ........but not much more than that.
One thing for sure is that TM&B are well aware of the situation and frantic work will have already started, behind the scenes, for us to find alternative choices for replacing Harding and Sawyer.......should it become necessary.
I've already indicated on another thread, that I DO expect JFC to sign for us in January and hopfully we shall also be able to extend Laurents contract.......so it's not all doom and gloom!

i spoke 2 a current player on saturday night, and he thought harding would not be staying, but suggested he would be going back to ipswich? even though i herd harding had a falling out with the management there. on a plus note he thought there was a good chance of sawyer staying as he had a disagreement at chelsea. i already posted this in the harding thread before i saw the sawyer thread on here. i have been a memeber on here for a while but dont post alot, and not stuff like this as i generally dont hear much, but just passing on what was said.

It's scary to think that there is a whole generation of Shrimpers who will have grown up knowing only Flahavan in goal. It must be a real awakening for them to see proper keepers in Federici and Mildenhall.

Flahaven spent two years taking the rap for Adam "4 years contract" Barratt
and "oh look they have just run past me" Maher - nothing in Fumbleballs
appearances convinces me he is a significant upgrade - he's tall enough but likes two chances to hold the ball - just a good league 1 keeper. Federicci
obviously fancies himself but gets beat from distance and clearly thinks hes way above SUFC .....

Darryl did enough to see off Crewes Alex's new keeper and get himself a Palace contract - the people on his back were probabley the same deeply insightful crowd who began to turn on Mark Gower ....

I disagree personally RB. Maher's always been one of my favourite players, he's a link player. He plays the defensive roll of JFC but can pass and see the forward game too.

Flavs was fantastic in our promotion year from League One, hence getting player of the division I think it was. Monumental for a keeper. However, he's nothing compared to Feds.

Sawyer could sign for us.. First team footy, crowds of 8k not 200, proper competitive games week in week out.. Signs a 2 year deal, we dont get promoted, he leaves to a Championship club in the summer .. I never really got the signing players up being so much more secure than loanees.. When they want to go they go, all teams are constantly changing .. The only value is of course the hoped for fee when they leave

Ignoring the Flahavan angle, I've heard far too much before on his merits/failings.

If Mildenhall can keep to the level of form he showed during the game he got injured, where he was superbly understated; taking crosses cleanly commanding his area and making the odd save or two, that's what I want from a 'keeper*. Snuff out the danger early then you don't even have a save to make. I totally agree that his early form was poor, no question, but IF Mildenhall's regular level is the box-commanding, juggle-free 'keeper we saw against Hereford then Fed's is second best - albeit a very good second best - because, for all his good work, he does still get rooted to his line sometimes which can be worse for defenders that someone who is always rooted to their line and he does like the odd juggle too.

*-Needs to work on his kicking though.

Doubt we could ever get him but if we did get him leaves us with rather an ambundance of keepers.

maybe we can put two in between the sticks.. :whistling:

seriously though, I think it would be an amazing compliment to the club if we could get sawyer on full time here!

As said before.. why not at least push them to give us him?

I was reading that Chelsea may need to sell before they can buy in January. Perhaps a fee for Sawyer will go a way towards them putting in a shock move for Ronaldo or Rooney. ;)

In all seriousness, any fee that we can afford will be a couple of weeks wages for a player at Chelsea - so if they don't want him and he's within our price range - I cannot see them worrying about getting every last penny. Maybe a bargain to be had

One of the big features of our win over Leeds, other than our work rate for the whole game, was the fact that Fed claimed pretty much every ball that went into our box, especially at the end when we were under pressure.

I didn't have anything against Flavs but that night I felt like we would hold on whereas previously I'd always have it in the back of my mind that something bad was going to happen.

Sadly of the 5 loanees we have, I'd say he's the least likely to sign permanently.

The problem we've got I guess is that there's very little we could do to stop another Club taking him on loan on sunday.

We can by all means agree a deal for him to come in January now. Lets hope that this gets done, as I'm sure it will if Lee is willing. I guess he may want to see what happens before then though.
