Ref Watch .... Kettle

A reasonable performance by any standards and a very good one by Kettle's standards.

He was helped by the fact that, for me, this was a very low key derby mainly due to the abjectness of Orient. When I went to Brisbane Road last season I thought the two teams on display at that time were two of the worst I'd ever seen at that level. Stoppage time apart, it was dreadful. Happily we improved on that performance last night, whereas Orient certainly did not; they look a good bet for relegation.

I don't think we'd have been at all happy if that penalty had been awarded against us but we were owed something by the refereeing fraternity from last week.

The two yellow cards could not be disputed and he got most decisions right so probably Kettle's best performance at the Hall.

He kept getting in Moussa's way in the first half when Mildy was kicking out, and completely got in Macca's way at one point in the first half too. To be fair, I was livid about the pen that wasn't in the 1st half, that one looked more giveable than the one he did! I was also pretty mad about the retake of the one that was given - but then he completely exonerated himself by disallowing the equaliser.

He did seem to be taking up a very wide position near the half way line for goal kicks etc and not quite the prescribed diagonal.

Why were you "mad" about the retake? He took the trouble to go round to all the players on the edge of the box and the "D" telling them not to encroach, so what do they do? (It should have been a re-take if he'd missed too as there were several players from both teams encroaching.)

The equaliser was disallowed by the Assistant Referee as the player who latched onto the rebound from Mildy's important save was off-side at the time of the original shot.

Your views on Scannel's run into the box and getting tripped possibly sticking us 1-0 up nicely in the first half Mick? Looked nailed on to me, defender committed himself to the challenge and in the words of the fanzine, all at sea.

From the West Stand, it was impossible to be sure. However, it looked more of a penalty, much more, than the one that was given.

I didn't see anything wrong, though not easy from my perspective I will admit. Being as the keeper was jumping up and down to try and put him off as well, he shouldn't have had to do it again - but cool as a cucumber he slotted it away beautifully both times.

Not sure what that has to do with it. As long as he stays on his goal-line, he doesn't have to remain motionless.

If an infringement is committed by players of both teams a re-take ensues regardless of the outcome of the kick.

His flag went up against the player who was initially played through to shoot. The guy who put the ball in was miles onside. It looked very tight to me, but as others have said on here we probably deserved one after last week.

As for the scannell 'foul' it was either a penalty or a booking for simulation in my eyes, so the ref got it wrong one way or the other.

The retake was probably correct, but with every penalty nowadays you get encrochment so it's just inconsistancy that infuriates the fans and gets the refs the boos.

Overall, I thought he did OK

The flag went up very early for the disallowed goal. Several seconds before the ball went in the net. Looked like they could have no complaints to me.

The first half 'penalty' wasn't - I had a great view of it, and it was an excellent challenge from Daniels that happened to take the man after the ball was won. Pity that was the only tackle the useless Spud reject made all night.

Our 'equaliser' looked offside even to me (Patulea who had the initial shot, not Smith who followed it in).

No view on the penalty as I couldn't see the incident properly.

Thought that was probably the best I've ever seen Kettle ref, but may well change my mind on viewing the highlights...

Won the ball? He never got near the ball.

You're 'avin a larf Stokesy.

Er, no. What would be the point in that? I was a) closer, and b) on the right side of the incident to judge it.

On the other hand, I was mildly inebriated. :D

Yeah, i too was midly inebriated..with joy at tonking the East End slummers:support:
