Jcr

Either way, we should be getting both things sorted now. By December, if JCR hasn't signed a new contract, we'd lose a good player and a decent fee. I've always thought contracts should be done 12 months before it expires for key players so we don't miss out on a fee or the player wont leave.

I'd imagine that the reason the club don't want to get into contract talks now is that they want to see whether we're heading towards getting back into the Championship. If this set of players are hanging around midtable then maybe a clear-out could/should be on the cards.

PS... Saw you on the way to Southampton last game of last season by the way, unless there are 2 suffolk shrimpers who have banners in the back of there cars? :)

There a quite a few Shrimpers in Suffolk actually so it might not have been Andy.

Never seen a "Suffolk Shrimpers" banner or flag yet though!

No it wasn't me, it was Suffolk Shrimper (who is also called Andy and who often travels with me and some other East Anglian Shrimpers to away matches). Andy is about a foot taller than me, and I'm about a foot wider than him; he's the one with the banner.

fyi: I was the incredibly good looking one who used to be on Anglia Soccer Night (when it was good :))

Does anyone else find it ironic that JCR is worried about our lack of signings so far? He, more than anyone, should know how long it takes to become a Southend player.

:D

Ha! Quality. And very true :) I can see why Jamal is concerned. It's disappointing to have not signed anymore players. But I am certain that here is activity going on, and I'm certain that, in the coming week/week and a half, we will be seeing a new player or two :D

He's right, you know. As another exile, I tried to get my old man to get me a ticket for the visitors' seats at Portman Road. As it was sold out, I had to settle for sitting with the home fans instead. Quite a few closet Shrimpers revealed themselves when those goals went in.

And back to subject of the thread... someone I know in Ipswich saw JCR play for Rotherham at Portman Road and says that the Ipswich fans applauded him off the pitch at the end of the game. The boy's coming good - we don't want to let him go.

Oooh, an Ip-exile! I'll be joining you in September...off to the new uni in Ipswich!

I congratulate RM for running a tight ship,in keeping the books balanced. But our lack of quality players both last season and so far this season in the transfer market is down to money. Im sure this wont come as a bombshell to anyone, but at the end of the day your not going to get quality players to come here for two grand a week.

But you might get decent players for £2k a week plus bonuses (thats still likely to be £150k a year which aint bad money!). Plus a decent signing on fee if we don't have to pay a transfer fee (free transfers or out-of-contracts). Especially if you can offer something that a player is looking for over and above the money.

There are players who can't get on the pitch at their present clubs but who might reasonably expect to becore first team regulars for us.

Others might be southerners stuck somewhere like Hull or Burnley, who want to move back to Essex, or be near London for family reasons.

There are also players who might be looking for a chance to kick-start their faltering careers, or perhaps squeeze a last couple of years playing at a reasonable level.

A few senior players might want opportunities to gain coaching experience, and need a club to help put them through their badges.

And we still have those undiscovered nuggets playing at Conference level who believe that a move to Southend is a move in the right direction and the opportunity to earn a few quid more than they're currently on for a couple of years.

And all of this is without factoring in new grounds, the Tilly factor, belief that we might be promoted again etc.

So all in all I believe we can get decent players in without spending money we can't afford to. And that's more important in the long run than mortgaging our future for the possibility of one or two years in the Championship.

That is 100% true. I met a couple of ITFC supporting friends before the gameback in March and they were honest and said other than Freddy they didn't really know who was in our team. As soon as I mentioned we had JCR their predictions changed from a comfortable 3-0 Ipswich win with comments of "I hope you like Chelsea Dagger as you'll be hearing it a lot today" to "oh well, we might just scrape a draw then"!!! Imagine how chuffed I was at 4.45pm that Saturday (Cousin Weir will back me up on that seeing he was sat a few seats down from me :D )

Ipshrimp, out of interest whereabouts in Ipswich are you? I lived there for a number of years until the small town mentality sucked the life out of me and still have family in the area! Oh & James, be warned an Essex accent doesn't go down too well in certain pubs/clubs in Ipswich (as I know much to my cost!)
