Has this season been a failure for you?

Having reflected on everythin we win sat and results go our way right back in the mix.

No we are not mate. We have played one more than most of the side above us, were in relegation form at home having not won at Roots Hall in six or seven. We would need a Roy of the Rovers type turn around to get anywhere near the play offs.

I believe Mr Kavanagh reported by making the Wembley final Southend financially would break ever this season ,which means that part of the equation as been a success,no we dont look like we will be promoted and that from a supporters eyes is failure,To me the failure is reading how woeful and gutless the home performances have been by the team,Its a failure whn they continually fail to give the supporters at home anything to cheer about, its after all you people who pay their wages.I know we cant always expect or get promoted but to see or read about so many woeful home displays is gut wrenching even to me and im 28000miles away , how you fans who work hard for your money and pay 20pounds out so often to see such rubbish , the players are the failure .

Sorry im speechless , I just pray they find the pride in themselves to give each one of you something to sing and cheer about at Wembley in April.

I agree with leeblue: if we finish the season with our first ever domestic trophy then I don't think it can be considered a failure. A cup final at Wembley with 30,000 Shrimpers there will be a day to remember and would be a great gift from Sturrock if he does leave at the end of the season. Of course I would take promotion over winning the JPT but another top 10 finish and a cup final certainly doesn't constitute a terrible season. And at least there's a chance we might be playing Col U next season!

Did we not get any pots or anything for winning Divs 3 or 4?

This season is not a failure. It's much worse than that. Its a massive lost opportunity.
PS out now Jackson in.

Michael? Janet?

On this thread yesterday I responded to a post by Smiffy and no one provided any answer to the question I posed. Perhaps it was just too ridiculous to deserve a reply but as, at my age, I fear ridicule a lot less, I'll ask the question again.
In brief, I was asking whether Ron Martin would honestly consider this season a failure because we haven't gone up?. Paul Surrock has seemingly failed to get us promotion but he has got us to a Final at Wembley which, from what we hear, will enable us to balance our books for the first time since the stone age. IIRC Ron arrived here with the object of a commercial venture, he has later said to have been bitten by the bug of supporting the club. Nevertheless, his prime aim (some would say, only aim) is certainly still the eldorado of FF. Seeing that is still some way in the distance, can some one explain to me simply, what benefit would Ron Martin gain from us moving up to League One?
Is there not a case to be made that Ron Martin, much to the contrary of what I read on hear, should be quite satisfied with the job Paul Sturrock has done this year? A (comparatively) financially successful year without out the added expenses of running a League One outfit next season.

from RM's perspective this all rings true other than the fact that while 3 points is 3 points home or away RM will need increased attendance for the masterplan to work and so home form is crucial or crowds will drop

I'm sorry, but I cannot bring myself to even entertain the idea that this season has been anything but a failure.

Whilst the Tinpot is a trip to Wembley for our fans to see our team play on the hallowed turf, it means very little in the overall scheme of things. Take a look at every team we played on the way to the semi finals. Every team we beat fielded at least three yoofs or rezzies. Does that sound like a trophy that was top of anyone's agenda?

And to add to that, how many of you think that Ron Martin sat down with Sturrock in the summer and said "I really want to win the JPT this season, Paul"?

Promotion was the prize, the JPT is just a rather glamorous "Wooden Spoon".

Yes, it's a bit worrying reading on here the number of people talking about not renewing their ST's. Perhaps we will now go on an unbeaten run, including a 'par excellence' performance at Wembley, which will lure some of the 30K Southend 'supporters' present, into purchasing them? :winking:

I would certainly agree with you and have already stated on here that the only visit to Wembley I really wanted to make this season, was one for the 'play-off' Final. A Final that REALLY meant something. I was only viewing the situation, as it could possibly be seen, from Ron Martin's point of view.

I wasn't actually replying to your post, but I can see how it reads that way :smiles:

I was just commenting generally to the thread.

Spot on superblue and Yogi .. We have failed this year end of ... I will be treating it as a day out at Wembley nothing more .. The league is the priority for every club we were a playoff team last year we are not this year bar a miracle thats failure
I may well be daft but I would have taken 3 wins in the last week and coming into form right now as Forest are in the championship over the JPT

Dont get me wrong I will be screaming for us at Wembley and want us to win as I do every game but for me and our 4k hardcore the league is the be all and end all

I think whether people are happy or not with this season has a lot to do with expectation. When I started supporting the team the aim was not to be relegated. We'd never actually been relegated or promoted, we'd always been in the third division. The second division was the promised land which I never thought would happen and relegation was too awful to think about. Then we started the yo yo years between the third and fourth. Now the expectation is higher as we've been to the promised land and we want more. I guess it's youngsters who are less satisfied. For me a Wembley appearance is a dream come true. A successful season for that reason alone.

Dont think it is just the youngsters that are less satisfied mate ..I have been going to Roots Hall since the mid 70s !! Its true what you say about expectation though and of course Wembley would have been seen as laughable back then for sure !! However we have gone backwards this year both on and off the field if we go backwards again next year we could be in a relegation fight thats why I think although the JPT final is good it just hides the fact we have gone backwards in the last 12 months overall

Despite the fact it's looking very unlikely we won't make the playoffs, by the looks of it this fact cheers some of you up tremendously. It's not actually over yet. I always say it, it's not acceptable for the players to give up so why should it be acceptable for us to give up? Just a thought.

.

MASSIVELY agree with this , I think on Saturday those with this view were in the minority though

I will judge the season once it is over and see how I actually feel at that point .

I'm not sure the seasons over yet... looking at the fixture list for all the top teams, I still think we can sneak a play-off place.
Look at Crewe last season! UTB

I won't be giving up on the team and I'm not sure many are. There are a lot of frustrated fans and I can understand that given the recent performances. I think your undying support is admirable but I can understand fans not turning up when they pay for mediocre football and leave frustrated when they do turn up. I have been put in terrible moods for the weekend by the few matches I have attended lately, I probably shouldn't let it get to me but it does. I think it is acceptable to not attend when it makes you feel like that, it's not giving up on the team it's just not paying out for something you aren't getting enjoyment out of. The players are a different kettle of fish, they are paid to do a job, if they give up it is unacceptable.

I don't always go along with the fact its the managers fault if we lose, sometimes it has to be down to the players. If we are good enough to beat Port Vale away then we should be good enough to beat plymouth at home.

But, to those of you who think the season has been a failure and that Sturrrock should be sacked, would you also expect every team that finishes below us to also view their seasons as failures and sack their managers too?

Unfortunately only 7 of the 24 teams can finish in the play offs or better. Not everyone can be promoted every year.

You've hit it on the nail there. Whilst some of us dream dream of the promised land (and why not.........it's good to dream sometimes), I reckon the majority of us on here see our rightful place as a third division (League One) side. In that position we can from time have aspirations of moving higher, even if it never comes to pass.

Completely agree with this. I find it far less supportive for people to turn up and hurl abuse at the players, which some people seem to go for. If my heart is not in it i'm not going to put myself through it. I'd far rather go to away games make a weekend of an away trip and have other things to distract from if the football is poor. If we weren't so skint as a club it wouldn't make a difference if a few didn't go now and then.

Wembley = Excellent unexpected bonus

League Posistion = Major Failure

I personally think that not getting out of league 2 this year will have a big effect. Firstly the attendances I think will get even worse and I also think that our best player who arent even performing will leave.
