Is the New Ground Definate?

Interesting to note that Reading's gate actually fell when they first moved from Elm Park. They picked up only when there was a playing revival.

But, hey, why let facts get in the way of a theory?

We got more fans than the one we in 1st Div, but most of 3rd Div side only bring around 200+ away fans while the like of Wolves, Crystal Palace & Ipswich etc bring around 1000+ away fans.

20,000+ fans at Cardiff in LDV Final is not bad considering Borient bought 12,000+ for the play-off final Vs Blackpool in 2001. Cheltenham Vs R & Diamond got around 20,000 (or few more) for their Play-Off final in 2002. Image if we played LDV Final or Play-Off final at Wembley in 3 year time, and yes we have fans base, its up to Southend Utd to peform on the pitch - just keep the faith.

I reckon we can get 10,000+ for a top 3 clash & full house for the play-off semi final ... time will tell.

Your telling me its really naive to think doing well in Division two we would get 9-10 thousand.
Yes it is naive, I know you were just at test tube stage in your life when we were in the First Division, but on two different occasions we were top for several games. We still did not get capacity crowds at Roots Hall.

We are not a footballing town, wake up and smell the coffee.

So why the hell did 20,000 go to Cardiff, if its not interested in football?

In the past we have not shown support, and as you quite rightly said i was only a sprog but we now have a new generation supporting Southend.

a) for a day out

b) to be part of history

c) general football fans, not southend (I saw several other teams represented in our end)

d) Glory hunters

to be honest, the only ones out of that lot that we stand a chance of getting to support southend regularly are the glory hunters, and then only when we're on the up.

Mind you, with wet sham not promoted, and, bearing in mind they'll lose carrick, having missed probably their best chance for a while, I wouldnt be surprised if we picked up a few of their borderline fans.

May also find a few of their fans in Southend, that were willing to travel to Upton Park for premiersh*te teams wont fancy the journey for Div 1 teams. May get a few of them too. Mind you, would you really want people at Roots hall who really support another team higher up in the league structure?

In the past we have not shown support? Not entirely sure what you mean there, but if this town has never shown support for a football club then why are we to my knowledge the only football club to have its ground built by its own fans? We seem to have a small loyal base of supporters, but it just cannot increase on a constant basis past that!

I think the above posts quite rightly state the answers to your first question so no need to duplicate.

As I said FM, go out and buy the history book of Southend and stop pretending that you know everything as your making yourself look very silly indeed.

Einstein

FM we know you love Arsenal but face it we are never going to be as big as them, whoever plays for us, however good we are, and whereever we play so get over it.

Its not a question of knowing everything, look at the gates this season.

We have spent the whole season in the bottom half of the table yet we are getting 4,000-6,000

I still maintain if this club was in Division 2 and doing well i.e Hartlepool style we would be getting double the attendence.
No we wouldnt double the attendence because we are a small club and it doesnt matter what division we are in we always will be, the opposite to Sheffield Wednesday and Man City, whatever division they are in they will always have big gates. The only games we will get big gates for are the big games.
And I know at least two people who borrowed shirts for the big game and as i didnt know that many people there that is quite a high percentage, while also knowing someone who buys a shirt every season but hasnt been to a game for the last 3 years or so.

My god, how many times do we have to go over this. Southend has languished in the bottom division for most of its 98 year term in the football league and we still could not get capacity crowds when we were in the First Division! Stop reflecting everything to this season and 20,000 fans to Cardiff, and its not about me living in the past, its realism.

Yep. Because when we were doing well in the old Division Three back in 1990/91 (now Division Two for all you young pups) and I mean REALLY doing well (like running away with the title before we fecked it up at the end), we STILL only managed to haul in 6,000 at the most into Roots Hall. Times haven't changed that much ...

In a word? Yes.

All that money being spent on TV rights is designed to channel support into the big teams, thus going against your arguement.

You are basing your hypothesis on pure conjecture... whereas the counter arguement is based on facts... which you are ignoring.

There is no evidence that suggests we'd pull in 9-10,000 if we're doing very well in division 2 OR division 1.

We'd love to be wrong, but the evidence is absolutely, overwhelmingly against that.

What next? Are you going to try and argue that the world is, in fact, flat?

Our biggest gates last season coincided with :

a) games against local rivals, which will always get bigger attendances irrespective of position in a league table;

b) promotions put together by the club's commercial department, such as the Family Days.

We still barely got 4,000 through the gates for the bottom-of-the-table six-pointer against Macclesfield Town, a game that demanded the full support of the people of the town. That's the indicator ...

WS

This town is a glory hunting town you know that. Why do the people wanna spend £15 to watch a religation scr*p ?

New Stadium, Good football and a good day out and you may see some change.

a) ... because they SUPPORT Southend United perhaps and want to see them come out on top in such a relegation scr*p? Sounds to me like you're one of the glory-hunters, FM.

b) ... I know Fossetts Farm is on the outskirts of town but it's not THAT far out of town?!

WS

I have an idea that might help us get a capacity crowd.

All Southend fans have 20 children each, no matter who you are or what gender you are then in 5,6,7 years time we may get crowds of around 80,000.

I reckon we should get practicing.

How in gods name do you work that out ?

Why would i go to sh*t holes like Macclesfield ?
