Is Ron saving his pennies to bring back Freddy ?

I agree that I'm being a bit optimistic and your point about the stability of the club is indisputable . My thought is that by taking a calculated risk ( and Freddie is a known quantity so the club can assess that risk ) we could actually make the club more viable by keeping ourselves in the promotion race and in the headlines . The other players I am referring to would have to be loan signings evidently

ahh right.. that makes more sense. It's an interesting argument, combined with what you've said about attractive football and attendances in the Gillespie thread. I don't know if we're in a position to take that risk now though- two years from Fossetts opening (so at a guess about 3 years from really starting to see the revenue streams come online to make an impact), losing cash from TV/away attendances etc due to relegation, and needing to find the capital to pay for the stadium. If that came off, great- but if we took that kind of risk now i think we'd basically be banking on getting promotion ths season, which is a huge ask. if we didn't, it could spell financial trouble.

in terms of Freddy- yes we know what he can do, but we also know he can get in a sulk for half a season if something ****es him off. that's got to be part of any assessment we did make (assuming the move is viable, which i'm not convinced it is).

I think it's not so much having to bank on promotion, more a question of making a serious challenge for it and being in the top 4 . Imagine if with a weakened squad we were in the bottom 4 this season - revenue would certainly tail off , just as the Sky coverage has since Freddy left .

Yes he did go into a sulk ( when RM refused to pay him more than £2,500 k /week I believe), but from the bits I've heard he would be happy living back around this way , he's earned already a fair bit of dosh and he's experienced a difficult year 'in the wilderness' . So I would like to think that he's earned and learned from the experience and that this wouldn't be an issue 2nd time round .

If the Club plays its cards right Fred is still young enough to command another big fee one day

I would have thought that having spent a year living in an unfamiliar area and being paid loads without actually getting a game would really p1$$ freddy off.
Maybe the chance to come back to a place where his name is chanted and people are his own would be a deciding factor for him.

I would welcome him back with open arms and would love to see him back in our team wearing a southend shirt.

He is a class act and the reason he threw a strop was because Ron Martin starting asking big money and we only paid 50k for him, so he was p1$$ed off that the club were trying to make alot of money out of his performances and then not let him speak to other clubs. TBH i can understand this.

If he wanted to come back last year and Mccarthy said no then he wants to come back. Maybe this time Mccarthy will say yes.

Please go back in for him because him and barnard up front would be the difference in top 10 to top 6 as far as im concerned maybe even top 4 if we can sign a quality left back and a top winger.

I have no doubt in my mind that at some stage Freddy will make a return to Southend. Probably not yet, but at some stage. And when that time comes Freddy is more likely to need us than we need him.

I think there is more chance of there being a Collymore/Angell partnership upfront next season.

I can see this pre-season being all about wheeling and dealing - trying to get some good players for bargain prices. I cant see us signing anyone above League 1 permanently. Personally I can see fully utilising the loan system again and also using some of our youngesters.

If we only finish mid table this season but gain some positives like giving some youngesters some experience than I will not mind.

of course i want to push for promotion - after getting so close last season. But just saying if we do not have a great season and do finish mid table if we manage to blood some youngesters in that season so they improve it wont feel like a complete waste of a season to me.
