Is Ron saving his pennies to bring back Freddy ?

If Coventry can't afford Eastwood's fee plus wages, then there's not a chance in hell Southend United in their current guise can.

Please can all this "Eastwood to return?" bolleaux stop?
I understood that Freddy is owed money by Wolves if he leaves and the stumbling block was that Coventry offered to pay 50% of this but Wolves would not stump up their share so FE stayed put
Fee and personal terms were agreed

Ah OK, hadn't seen specifics as to the glitch which scuppered that deal. Ta!
Still no way SUFC could afford £750k to £1m plus £8k a week though plus any necessary bonuses.

you are all blind he dont love southend for football just for building on .i no money dont grow on trees (buying season ticket early didnt help me) but he said he had a war chest (not my words his) ! If he does get this stadium built how much money will end up in his pocket 10 20 30 million or more when we were in the championship at christmas he should have spent some money out of that war chest .

He hasn't made anything yet, he's just got lots of bills to pay.

Money doesn't grow on trees, especially for a recently relegated club £millions in debt.

Then he shouldnt have come out and say "this club belongs in the championship" when clearly that is not true when we cant even compete with the teams in this league for players. I doubt we fought off much competition for Osei Sankofa.

Whatever your point of view is .I know this as fact ....We were down 3 million last year due to our fall from the Championship. Ron did not cut any staff in fact he took more on and took the club further forward as we see now with the planning granted...How much do you think that piece of land cost from Southend Estates to allow the progress to continue? You are I am afraid talking rubbish if you think he does not have the club at heart. For sure he will make money out of the building of Fossetts and RH..Since when did you work for nothing?

I hope not,

Which is entirely the point of building the new stadium and accompanying complexes, we will have a firmer financial footing to allow us to become that Championship team.

I'd rather be in the Championship in a few years time with that added stabilty behind us, and struggle for a couple of years before then. Rather than spend ridiculous money on players to get in the Championship now and then have no club to support in 5-10 years time.

What if a month goes by and no-one has bought Freddy?
He's not going to play for Wolves any more so won't the loan deal that nearly happened at the end of last season becoming a possibility again?

What if a day goes by without a bunch of Freddy related threads somehow still dominating the boards despite his departure now being a very long time ago?

Can't help wondering if all this 'lack of activity' in the transfer market points to us pulling off one or two big deals .

Tilly evidently and correctly has been told to cut out the dead wood and trim the wage bill to a minimum .Progress has been made .

Bringing Fred back would guarantee extra bums on seats and TV revenue and he is one of the few CCC level players who would consider playing for us .

After a year under Mick Mac , Fred know's where he is well off . With a Goat style player along side him he will get chances . And Barney when fit will provide competition for places and options during matches .

Seems like a win win situation all round to me and with Freddy back and the right support, win win we will - especially if we can strenghten the midfield and CB if Bailey and Clarke move on .

C'mon Ron splash the cash and splosh the dosh - you know it makes sense !

Light blue touch paper and retire immediately. Caused quite a stir with your rod and hook H.

so you expect us to spend at least a million on Eastwood, about 8 grand a week on wages, and then have enough cash to spend on comparable or better replacements for Bailey and Clarke? No wonder people moan at games if this is the kind of expectation level that people have.... I'd rather have a club to support in 10 years, to be honest :stunned:

I agree that I'm being a bit optimistic and your point about the stability of the club is indisputable . My thought is that by taking a calculated risk ( and Freddie is a known quantity so the club can assess that risk ) we could actually make the club more viable by keeping ourselves in the promotion race and in the headlines . The other players I am referring to would have to be loan signings evidently

This would be an ideal option and if we are to believe the comments made recently when Freddy was at Essex Car Rentals , then the salary was not an issue although I doubt that SUFC would have been picking up all the tab .

As for jealousy amongst the other players , I am sure that they are sensible enough to recognise a gifted player when they see one and realise that with the firepower of someone like Freddy in the side the win and hopefully promotion bonuses would be much greater.

One thing is for sure , we are not the only club that is going to have to rely heavily on loan signings this season .

I'm not so sure about the salary not having an impact. I raised this issue with the club in our relegation season and said that if we got someone big on loan for 3 months and they helped save us from relegation then it was money well spent. Forsell for example wanted £10k a week. Although I argued that everyone would benefit if we stayed in the Championship I was told that the salary would upset the other players.

we was told at a shairholders meeting while in the champ-- that we went for forsell on a season loan from brum at £27k a week ,ron and tilly said this is what we are up against. lets hope 1 day to be bigger not to long in the distance future i hope.

Well I'm sure there must be some resentment but I would like to think that we have learned our lesson from what happened in the Championship year . At that time I ws encouraging the retention of Fred and accomodation of his wage request ( £5 k / week I believe , not the £8 k he is on now ) on the basis that if we drop aout the CCC it will cost us more than we could get for Fred . A year on and RM is essentially confirming that and giving the loss of revenue as a reason for needing to have the share issue .

Its a tough one !

Maybe £10k I was told was the amount we had to pay towards his salary if we had him on loan. £27k a week for a player who spent a lot of time in the reserves - crazy money.

Absolutely - and if the effects of recession starts to put a squeeze on premiership clubs' attendances , Sky TV subscriptions etc then maybe we will see some return to more sensible salary levels .

Overall these tough times could work to the benefit of a club like SUFC if we can skilfully navigate the choppy waters .
