In all seriousness...

and before people have a heart attack...

Is Tilson's time up? Poor in defence, poor in attack, no clue with substitutions, staying down this season.

Is it time for a change?

His last Striker signings....

Harrold - ****
Forran - OFF
Paynter - Gone
Macdonald - Non league Freddy Eastwood - **** off.

Tilson in or Tilson out?

What about the poor signings he has made?

I do agree he has made some crackers but surely 4 poor players and possibly more is quite upsetting.

Simple.
We haven't got the money to throw around yet to buy at the top end of the scale so it's the up-and-coming bucket or the mediocre L1 or L2 bucket to choose from.
Which bucket will you dip your hand in because that is your only choice?

EnglandShrimper essentially what your post seems to be suggesting is you want a League 1 manager on a small budget both in real terms and comparatively with other teams in the division to never make a mistake in the transfer market when the best he can realistically hope to do is take a chance on a player seemingly on the way up from the lower leagues, or somebody with experience coming down.

We cannot buy the superstars of the lower leagues and having just been relegated I think we're in a fantastic position.

If you're expecting miricles, such as instant promotion with an array of 25 goal a season strikers at our disposal then you need to get your head out of your **** pretty sharpish.

I was actually at a game tonight, Corinthian Casuals v Met Police and I spoke to a Dulwich fan who was there. App they had Scannell before Eastleigh and he was the best player for them.

I hope he turns out to be amazing for us too!

I think I am being a but harsh on Tilson. he definitly has done brilliantly with what he has had but are we stagnating? Are we moving in the right direction?

Don't forget that with the window not opening 'till Jan,you can't just sign the players you need to change things, makes life ruddy difficult for manager and supporter.
We can all see where we are going wrong!!
Whoever we sign,we are stuck with for half a season at least.
Oh and there's a reason why players get loaned out, they're not good enough to play!!

Im with ES. i tjink its time for tilly to go. his tactics are poor, his timing of subs, if made, are wrong and some of signings are awful. for those that go on about shoe string budget, i agree its tough at our level, but he has wasted money on paynter, foran, harrold to name a few. so he has had money to spend and in some cases has got it wrong. people on here seem to caught up in sentiment. we have the nucleous of a good team they just need to be jelled together properly, motivated right and tactically sorted out. we are making the same mistakes that we hae made over the past few seasons time and time again. thats not just down to the players, its up to the management team to get it right as well. despite my commens i will support tilly all the time hes in charge, i just feel that mayb he has taken us as far as he can. utb

Tilson out, ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha ha. You are either on a wind up, a complete fool or one of the 'new supporters' if we lose Tilly who else would come in and care as much as tilly, or actually do as good a job as tilly, are you blaming tilly for all those missed chances at gillingham because personally I blame leon clarke for those misses of his and the oldham game too. Have you forgotten the back to back promotions or the two LDV finals, I been supporting for 25 years and seen many a manager come and go, do you remember murphy, whelan, martin, little, newman, wignall, the years of struggling at the foot of league two, Tilly must stay for as long as possible that way I know Tilly sending out a team that cares as much as I do. And as for bad signings what about the good ones... Macca, bailey, barrett, some bloke called freddy another crap signing that goat bloke.

I wonder if the Crewe fans had spates of Gradi Out campaigns when their team wasn't performing as well as they all hoped?

Face facts, hitting the playoffs this year is a good season. What we didn't want to happen was a similar freefall to the last time we dropped out of the 2nd tier.

I'd say Tilson has at least got until Xmas 2008 before he needs worry about his job, unless certain "supporters" hound him out like they have people like Matt Harrold!

not another "should tilly go" thread... what is wrong with you? some people need to take a reality check and look at the bigger picture... given our attendances, budget, etc, etc we are in a healthy position in the football pyramid... although i guess some people on here think we should be challenging for europe!
:thump:

One of the problems with success is that it breeds expectation. People now expect us to repeat the feats of the promotion seasons because we've just come down, when in reality life and football are not that clear cut.

Every manager makes signings that don't turn out like they'd want and Tilson is no different. If you weighed up good v bad signings I'd wager they good signings column would be longer than the bad signings. I agree to extent that his substitutions are somewhat lacking or poor, but when you have your best 11 players on the pitch and your subs bench is made up of squad players, it's not easy to say to someone like Hooper and say "go on Gal, give us a goal" when in all honesty he's worse than what's on the pitch.
At times I do think he's tactically limited but when we've tried new formations (i.e. Oxford away) this season we've looked utter rubbish. We look okay with a 4-3-3 (i.e. Norwich last season) but if you look around the lower divisions most teams plays 4-4-2 and don't deviate too often from that.

Tilson for me is still the right man for the job, i think some of the criticism he's had this season has been awful. He's still young in manager terms and (hopefully) over time he'll learn from his mistakes.

Bingo. Some people don't seem to be able to see the wood for the trees. I hope we go up this season but we have no divine right to go up, we're not one of the three biggest clubs in this league, we've not got one of the three most expensively assembled squads in this league and we've certainly not got one of the three biggest wage bills. Promotion should be a target and an aspiration but it shouldn't be the sole standard against which we judge the manager.

I think Tilly should stay no matter what for at least two reasons:

1 - Steve Tilson is an intergral part of the long-term plan for Southend United and him refusing to put Gary Hooper on until 20 minutes after some people would like really doesn't change that.
2 - I don't think that there is anyone out there who could guarantee anything like the success that Tilly has given us and if there is then he'll **** off to a bigger club as soon as he starts to do a good job leaving us back at square one.

Managerial jobs at Clubs like ours are either stepping stones for promising managers, one more haven for failed managers or are play-things for bored ex-Pros who fancy having a crack at being 'The Gaffer'. It beggers belief that anyone who sat through the years between Barry Fry getting the job and then Steve Tilson getting it would want this Club to go back to those days.

Barry Fry getting the job and then Steve Tilson getting it would want this Club to go back to those days.

Managers since Fry:

Taylor
Thompson
Whelan
Martin
Little
Webb
Newman
Wignall

Some horrific memories come flooding back when I type that list out. Even the return of Webb saw him do some horrific things at the time like picking his own son and subjecting us to the likes of Pony Richards and Jason Harris. Although to be fair, his main remit at the time was to do something drastic about our ludicrous wage bill that John Main had run up.

You will never be a succesful club if you keep chopping and changing manager look at teams like Newcastle, Leicester, Fulham. Tilly has to be given 5-10 years to build a championship team. With the new stadium (hopefully) and Ricky Duncans good work with the youth team the future is very bright and we have one of the best young managers in the country.

I would quite happily replace Tilly with anyone who I know will get us promoted without putting us in too much debt, then consolidating our position in the championship.
As I don't know anyone who will do this, I am content with the current situation.

And before anyone starts posting lists of names, please note that I said will, not could or is capable of .
