I notice it's a US census. So, is that population of the World as in teams that play in the 'World' series? Or, the 'New World'...

That'd be one busy fixture list!

My hidden meaning being of course that our transatlantic cousins do have a reputation* for not counting 'the World' as anything too far from their own borders - unless there's a valuable natural resource to control...

*amongst many other far more admirable traits of course.

And as for a baby born of rape - how do you think it would affect the child when he found out he was born of violence and hatred? This would be another child in care - which is far from the best environment for a child - as I doubt the mother could bond with the child, as every time she looked at it, she'd see the face of the man who raped her.

That is not always true. You hear about women who have children, some unfortunately the product of rape, but some of them keep the child as it is HER child, and will still love it, no matter how it was produced.

That is very true. I guess it comes down to the ultimate question -

"Is it nature or nurture that defines your personality". Time for another thread perhaps.

I'd imagine parents who looked at their child and could only think of them as a mistake are much more likely to be abusive or neglectful towards the child. One of the big reasons I'm pro-choice is that I think parenthood is something that needs to be accepted and embraced whole heartedly. I hate the thought of a child coming into this world only to live a horrible life because their parents aren't ready to accept their responsibility.

As you mention adoption is a great alternative, but there is no way to force people who are going to be horrible towards their child to give the baby up for adoption. A child is only taken away if abuse has already occurred in most situations, and by the time child services steps in it is often too late, the child is already dead, seriously injured, or irreversibly emotionally scarred.

Furthermore, a woman who has an unwanted pregnancy I would imagine is much more likely to do things such as smoke, use drugs, etc. during that pregnancy which, sometimes won't have a lasting effect on the child but can also lead to serious birth defects and often times the child not surviving past infancy.

Come on, I know loads of woman who've been desperate to have babies, but not that desperate that they've managed to offer their unborn the best protection they can by either stopping smoking or cutting back on the drink. Heck, I even know of children born to addict parents, who have been wanted, poor little mites going through detox at just a few days old.

No-one can predict what sort of parent they will make. There are so many outside influences that can affect this that it's an impossible call to make. You obviously hope you will make right choices for your kids, but no-one is perfect, there is no definitive guidebook for parents. What I am saying is that if a woman is fool enough to not be able to take responsibility for her own body then she shouldn't be offered abortion as a fail safe, and she should then be helped to make the right decision for her child when it is born.

I bet it's a tiny, tiny minority and would take one hell of a strong woman IMHO.

I agree, I honestly don't know how I would feel in those circumstances. Yes the child is genetically half you, but the other half is genetically the child of an evil b*****d. While I appreciate that a lot of women these days conceive through sperm donation, it's not exactly the same set of circumstances is it?
