Hillsborough anniversary

It appears Sheffield Wednesday FC couldn't really give a **** about what happened in their stadium. There is no permanent monument or plague in memory of the 96 who died despite numerous attempts by the families and Liverpool FC to try and get them to put one up.

there is a memorial at Hillsborough

OK, I stand corrected. Must be new, it wasn't there when we went in the CCC year.

It's not at the Leppings Lane entrance (not sure why), but around at the main entrance. Usually has flowers on it when I've walked past.

Can I ask that we all observe a 2 minute silence (e.g. no posting between 15:06 & 15:08, tomorrow Wednesday 15 April)?

I know it's not directly SZ or SUFC related but wanted this post to be seen by all. I feel it's worthy enough of observing, like we have done in the past for Rememberance Day, the 7/7 tributes etc. Benitez has also come out today and said all football fans, not just Liverpool supporters should remember tomorrow.

My dad said it was 3.10 because that was the time he was walking up the aisle, but all the same doesn't matter what time it was still a great idea!

I will be taking some time to reflect on those that died today.

During these past two weeks there was an important date for Leeds fans as well, NOBODY should lose their life watching a game.

RIP

ido we hold a minuites silence for those who died at Bradford in thier fire?

Extremely good point indeed. We never hear too much about that day anymore do we?

I am saddened so many lost their lives at Hillsborough as for anybody who followed football in the 70's to 90's there but for the grace of god go I.

Truth is Liverpool fans killed those Juventus fans at Heysel and had English clubs banned for all those years from Europe and are hardly the angels they have been portrayed as.

Bloody disgraceful that the police got away scot free that day at Hillsborough when it is obvious that many of the deaths that day were down to them and that nobody has ever been held to blame for this due to various cover ups at top level no doubt to stop the truth from ever being known.

I'll be taking a minute to consider the poor souls who lost their lives 20 years ago today.

I do though feel uncomfortable that there is barely ever a mention of the disaster at Heysel that led to the deaths of 39 people on 29th May 1985. Is there a memorial of any kind at Anfield for those lives? Remember that these folks died as a direct result of the actions of Liverpool fans.

I'll be interested to see the media coverage next year on on the 11th May on the 25th anniversary of the Bradford Fire in which 56 died; and I don't recall much mention at all over the years of the 66 who died at Ibrox on 2nd January 1971.

I'm not intending any disrespect at all to the memories of those who died at Hillsborough. But there will be some fans who were at least partly to blame for the incident standing in the crowd there today never having had to accept responsibility for their actions.

As with all things similar though it's about remembering the innocents who lost their lives not remembering the guilty who may have been partly responsible.

I hear what people are saying about Heysel, Ibrox and Bradford, I think the significance of this though is the sheer number of fans that died at Hillsborough, many of them youngsters (I didn't realise that the youngest one, just 10, was a cousin of Steven Gerrard) and the circumstances, which were largely preventable.

I suspect that most right minded people may also allow memories of these other tragedies to cross their minds during any tribute they may decide to pay today.

RIP the 96, God bless their families who have had to cope with their losses.

Totally agree

"Truth is Liverpool fans killed those Juventus fans at Heysel and had English clubs banned for all those years from Europe and are hardly the angels they have been portrayed as"

not wanting to start an argument on a grim old day like today - but the liverpool fans did not kill anyone at Heysel - there were crowd disturbances in a unsafe stadium and a wall collapsed resulting in the tragic death of 39 fans -

Not only that but Peter Robinson told UEFA not to hold it at Heysel as it was unsafe

Reality is that both Heysel and Hillsborough hosted lots of big games without there ever being a disaster before- Common denominator?
Net result - Banned from Europe
- All seater stadiums ( although the Kop still stand throughout every game)

My thoughts exactly SB, though not a popular one.

The fact that Liverpool fans have never accepted even 0.00001% of the blame for what happened made me turn over the TV at the weekend every time I saw pictures of the Kop, most of whom can't even work out which way up their scarf was supposed to be held.

Sorry if it offends, but to me that they've never accepted any responsibilty for Heysel either is a factor to dislike anything connected with Liverpool, although it was clear that no game should ever have been held in a place held together by scaffold poles in the 1st place.

Bradford is a far more moving football related event IMO as it was utterly accidental so I shall reserve my tribute for them.

the Bradford fire is always on my mind whenever I am trapped in the crowded corridors of the wooden East stand -

sitting in your seat you always feel you would make it onto the pitch but elsewhere

I think some Bradford fans were intructed to head out of the stand via the usual means.. i.e. into the narrow corridors, before the true extent of the fire was apparent..Yes you'd think most people would make it onto the pitch, well those able to step over the seats in front, there quite a few in the East stand that dont look that nimble though!

I do think we as a country are getting obsessed with mourning (jade goody for instance). There should be a service and minutes silence at liverpool for the affected to grieve but a 2 minute internet silence is going a bit too far in my book!
