Echo News Hashtag Utd 5-3 Southend XI - Essex Senior Cup

All of Wood's goals have come in pre season or at a lower level, he played plenty at the start of last season and he didn't look physically strong enough to have an impact on the game.
We don’t play him in his position- we don’t play wingers or indeed a number 10 or three up top all of which he could be effective in.

He went to Tonbridge playing his natural position a got plenty. He had a chance last night and couldn’t do more than bang in a hatrick in a side otherwise on the back foot and letting in five…We have to decide what we are going to do with him. Not playing him is pointless and unfair and harms his development.

A very realistic outcome is if we loan him to a NL side who play him in his natural position he will score regularly, we can get a fee and watch him become another Gary Hooper. I have an uncharitable feeling we don’t like that idea either for no other reason than it would be embarrassing. It shouldn’t be- he doesn’t fit into our system.

BTW whilst it’s easy to question is scoring record for us

3 in 45
Is in fact 3 in 7 starts and 38 sub appearances
Indeed he’s only been on the pitch for 1017 mins which is less than 12 games..
Which again highlights how lack of game time will be doing him not a great deal of good.
Agreed massively better record than Bonnes who cant score for toffee record and far more energetic with a brighter future, still Kev rarely lets him off the bench for more than 5 minutes

What position did Wood play last night? What was the overall formation/system?
Wood played as part of a front two. The overall formation was essentially 3-5-2; the club’s U19s and U18s mirror the first team philosophy and systems, so three central defenders, wing-backs, a holding midfielder and two more advanced central midfielders plus two up front (plus a goalkeeper, of course!).

Many see Bonne’s worth, including importantly Kev who knows what he’s doing, and his views are the ones that matter. I don’t think that will change based on the expert views on this forum. FWIW I think Bonne will score plenty in due course. Anyway a mute point as Wood is an attacking MF / winger not a CF…so it’s not either or..

Laughable comment.
Bonne is a proven goalscorer at a higher level who contributes massively to our attacking play, even though he’s not scoring yet.
Poor Wood offers next to nothing at this level and I’m sure he’d be much happier playing the likes of Hashtag every week.

Does the management team see him being able to play there going forward? Or was it that he desperately needs game time and so the only option is to play “out of position” (again). Would playing either as the right or left attacking MF have been more beneficial if they believed he could play there and give n our system?

If they feel he ultimately will be better served up top probably definitely needs a loan to develop that- with Bim, Walker, Waldron & Bonne will he get game time especially as he would be more competing with the former three in style of play?

Will be interesting how this plays out. If having scored three he remains an unused sub on Sat then I don’t know..If we believe he is going to be in the front two we need to find him a loan at a club who will regularly play him there? He won’t learn that “trade” just on our training ground.

TBF if Barry C is a bit tough on Bonne then perhaps you are being likewise on Wood?
If for example he was playing regularly on the wing my feeling is he would do a decent job at another club in our division (certain bottom half of the division).

Anyhow something has to change you would think.

WOOD IS NOT A STRIKER.

Enough of comparing him to the other strikers.

He's a wide attacker who would suit a 4-3-3 formation that we sadly don't play. Or a winger in a 4-4-2

He's not got a natural place in the squad and in most games that we are chasing, the only position I'd play him would be wing back, but keep him further forward almost like a 3-5-2. But with Gus in the team, that's a very bold move to make .

I do however think he is underutilised and in some games that we have been chasing, I'd have brought him on for people like Bridge or Gus and gone more attacking out wide

I seem to remember earlier in the season when he came on putting in a few really decent crosses one of which we scored an equalizer from, thats something we seem to be not too good at putting in some decent crosses, cant say Bridge or Gus for that matter are really good with that part of their game . Ws really hoping after that cameo role that Wood would get more game time but alas thats not eventuated, unless things change for the lad and Maher and co give him some extended runs i think come January he will either be loaned out or moved on im afraid . Lets not forget this lad has now scored 2 hattricks with the club ,only Kanu when he was here on loan has scored a hattrick in recent seasons , Yes you can say one was in a preseaon friendly and this one in a local Essex Senior cup game, how many of the senior players in preseason matches scored a hattrick recently and as for the match against HASHTAG he was playing with 18 and 19 year olds beside him. To be honest i would have given Waldron and Cav a 60 minute run out also in that game to help their match fitness.

Pretty sure that when the right opportunity and time arises he will be going out on loan.
The question for me is have the club now decided what position see him as?
- winger
- L or R attacking MF
- forward
- wing back
I would hope when he goes out on loan it will be to play in the position we want him to play going forward- even if this means dropping divisions. Letting him go on loan to a club that plays him on the wing when we don’t play wingers would only make sense if we wanted to let him go…

I always compare him to Oli Coker. In terms of development. Oli has really made himself a mainstay and Jack hasn’t been able to. Coker has taken his chance and cemented himself. Wood hasn’t had the same level of opportunities and that must be down to position. Oli’s done great to establish himself, wish Jack could have done the same as he has a lot of talent in my mind. He'll leave and he will do well IMO.

And if Oli was a winger and Jack a CM, as you mention it’s more difficult to take your chance if, for example, you are a winger in a side that doesn’t play wingers. That said I think Oli is one of our players who could in due course play a division or two higher. BTW do you see Jack as
- winger
- L or R attacking MF
- forward
- wing back
And where would you play him in our system?

I’m really not sure. He has great feet and clearly looks more at home attacking right as a RF eg the ball in for Gus against Daggers.

I’d of tried to mould him into a Jack Payne role, I think.
