Greatest Blues Game

1989 Southend 3 Spurs 2 - Crown hitting the past which would have given us the tie on away goals. A Spurs team that included Gazza and Lineker - that team took a hell of a beating that night !!! Awesome game ..

Hope someone can assist, I'd love to see that footage. Am I imagining it or did Benji play for Northampton in that game?

He was indeed playing for Northampton in that game, up front alongside Richard Hill, who I believe finished top scorer on our league that season.

This game will always go down as my personal favourite. It was just an incredible evening, absolutely bucketing down with rain, greasy surface, and two teams just giving it everything - apart from much in the way of defending.

Even more remarkable was the fact that when we met Northampton at home on Boxing Day that season, they trounced us 0-4 on their way to the title, and at the time, a record points tally - we also got promoted that season.

Think I may have mentioned it before, but there was an elderly gentleman sitting next to me, and he went through an entire hip flask of Brandy with the excitment - I didn't see him for a few months - he eventually returned, and it turned out he had suffered a heart attack, brought on by the stress of that game!! He said it was totally worth it!

Not wishing to be pedantic, but it was Gary Bennett who hit the post in the last minute, which would have given us the tie 4-3 on aggregate!

Was a fantastic game though, and is certainly in my top 5.

Southend 4-4 Northampton in the FA Cup.

That was going to be mine, along with the 3-2 win at home to Hartlepool when we scored two goals in injury time to win it. John Gymer got the winner, and Richard Cadette the other two.

For some reason, that game sticks out in my mind - the reason being I turned to my Dad and said we're going to win this 3-2... that was with about 5-6 minutes remaining!! I think he just agreed to humour me as I was only a nipper, but low and behold, up stepped my name sake and Mr Gymer to win it for us!

This game is one of the reasons why I hate t*tt*nh*m with a passion.

I remember lineker running to the corner flag every time he got the ball in the 2nd half.

It also had the best tackle i've ever seen - Big Roy going in two-footed, about knee high, from behind.

Splendid!

We didn't score at WHL. I think you mean it would have stopped Spurs winning on the away goals?

As far as I remember the first three goals were scored in the last three minutes of the first half also. They scored in the 43rd, Cadette equalised in the 44th and they took the lead again in the 45th. It stayed that way until the 91st minute.

I also remember the Hartlepool fans racially abusing Richard Cadette from start to finish, and he repaid them with two goals.

Well if you don't remember it correctly, we're both remembering the same thing! :) That is, roughly, how I remember the scoring going. I do have the programmer from the following game somewhere in the loft, but not one single part of me fancies the thought of going in there and trying to find it amongst the junk!

Swansea away 8 man victory. Just because there was so little expectation, and it truly dumbfounded me, stepping away think what the hell just happened there? The Swansea fans were definitely a little more hostile then than the promotion 2-2 game. ;)

I remember that I had to go to a family party the day of that game and was looking on my phone and it said we had had 3 players sent off so i just though oh no and didn't bother looking again until after the final whistle when my mate texted me saying what a game how did we win that!

I've mentioned this game a few times but Newport at home. We were trailing 2-0 with 11 minutes left and we had been diabolical all night. Up pops Tony Hadley with a header into the North Bank goal, 2 from Gerry Fell and 1 from Stuart? Parker and Blues won 4-2.

Many buggered off to the pub and wouldn't believe us when we told them the result. They had to look in the papers the next morning for confirmation. One reason why I don't leave matches early.

Derrick Parker i think, this was my first season and i'm pretty certain he'd replaced Stuart over the summer

I've got that video somewhere, all from the South bank I think!

I thought I was the only one to remember that one!!
