Im actually glad this topic was raised, as im at university in Sheffield there is an abundance of away games I can go to, Rotherham, Chesterfield, Doncaster, Barnsley, Huddersfield etc
However was concerned about going on my own as i have never done this, but reading that many people do go on their own and feel fine I think I might just make the trips now! Good topic mate !

p.s if any1 sees me, (tall wearing a southend shirt now doubt) at the bar on his own at any of the above venues, please come and talk to me

I have been going to football on my own since i was 14, trips to london (to watch Spurs) were a lot safer than today. While a spurs fan i spent about 5 years going around the country on my own, i was there to support the team so having people around was not an issue, but i did make friends as soon as i started pubbing before and after games (does this sound familiar to some of you). It does add something to the whole football experience if you go with friends or family.

I am now fast approaching forty so it's in the family stand with the kids at the Hall now. and i would not swop it for the world, seeing their faces light up when that goal went in on saturday was priceless.

If you go on your own just go to a singing section you soon get caught up in it all and you suddenly become part of the group.

Home games i go with my Dad, so no problems there, being at uni in Kingston tho is sometimes a problem with Away games. Have Alex to go with for shorter away games , but for instance Bury last season went on my own on the Train, overslept and only just got there at Kick off, On the way back got drunk on a bottle of Vodka and Red Bull with these 3 Norweigan guys who had come over to see Spurs at Man City, they were happy with a win, and so was i with ours so that was fun. Any way its just something you have to do!!

At Roots Hall, you might go on your own, but you'll leave with a few new friends most of the time.

Also, the good thing about a community like SZ is that you can always arrange to hook up with people you've only got to know on line.

If I can go to a Southend game, I do so. Having decided to go, I then worry about whether or not I have someone to go with. If I don't, then I will still I go on my own.

Of course, it's much better to go with a crowd and have all the banter and suchlike - luckily, I've met a few more fans over the last year or so (including a good few through SZ) and nearly always have a few people to sit with now.

I'm schizophrenic so I always have someone to go to the matches with.
Unfortunately they rarely let me out of the sanitorium so we have to listen on Blues world whilst bouncing off the walls of our padded cell

There's no doubt that going to games with your mates is a hell of a lot better, but as most of my mates support Premier$hite teams I have a right task in convincing them to come n watch Southend. At the end of the day, I'd much rather go to the game on my own n feel like everyone is staring at me than stay at home because of people cancelling at the last minute

Thats a good idea though. I think that if you want to go to a game but no body can make it then you could post on here. Like car sharing etc. Would save £ etc. Thoughts?

Been to so many games on my own, Love it as well, its always good to go with a few palls, but I do enjoy going on my own sometimes and doing what i want top do,and just keeping myself to myself, quite abit last year I would drink with the chaps down the pub before the game but just go and sit in different stands just to see what the facilities are like and the view etc.

Wanted to see more games this year so I bought a season ticket, but as im surrounded by Man U/Arsenal/West Ham/Spurs and yes 1 Orient fan, I'll be on my odd most of the season.

A lot of my friends......even hate football

I too used to be schizophrenic, but I'm alright now.

So am I.

Well I often go along with one of my brothers, and having four of them I tend to have someone to go with. I also meet up with a few of my team mates in the pub before hand so its very much a social event for me.

But on the odd occassion last season, I was often going to games alone but I don't mind it one bit. There are a few guys around me that I can have a chat with during half time etc. But when I watch a match thats all I concentrate on for the 90+ plus minutes, I'm kicking every ball, winning every header and tackle and contesting every decision so I don't like talking during the match so its sometimes better to go alone.

Have found it difficult. Hard core of 6 filtered down to my Dad and me and then he died. I found it hard to go and was part of the reason for my five year exile and returned beginning of last season and worked my way back into it. Getting to know new people, but going to Cardiff alone for play-offs was very strange as was Grimsby.
True fans still a great bunch of people, so you are never really alone.

Ditto what he said...

As someone who is the only Shrimper in his family, I owe a considerable debt to the advent of the internet. Until I discovered the yahoogroups list in, what, 1999 (?) I went to all games alone.

I then met my first batch of SUFC regulars, most of whom (with the exception of Robin Michel, who is an East-stander I think) are South Upper regulars - so that's where I settled in the ground.

I then discovered the joys of ShrimperZone - through Scriv, I think (who I'd met during the days of the List) - and I've never looked back, really. From there, it was a short step to meeting people in the Spread, and inflicting myself on that group... poor souls that they are, having to put up with me...

So, although SUFC-watching was originally a very solitary pursuit for me, it has turned into a very sociable one, all thanks to the world-wide web. And that's fab!

Well take pity on me, I have to go to matches with Shrimpboy! Could be worse I suppose, could be Wiggy, throwing her knickers at Flahavan.
