Transfer News and Gossip George Moncur signs on loan for the season

Transfer news

Southend United are delighted to announce the signing of attacking midfielder George Moncur on a season-long loan from Leyton Orient.

Moncur has played well over 300 games in the EFL and joins the Club following two strong seasons at Orient.

Upon signing, he said: “I can’t wait to meet the boys, help them out as much as I can and get some goals and some wins.

“There are really good people here with the coaching staff and everyone behind the scenes. I know it’s a big Club and the atmosphere’s brilliant, so I’m really looking forward to getting out there.”

He appeared in 43 league games as the O’s won promotion to League One in 2022/23, scoring nine goals that season, before playing 35 times in the third tier last term.

The 31-year-old also has a significant amount of experience in the Championship, where he’s represented Barnsley, Luton and Hull City.

Moncur progressed through West Ham United’s academy, with his first senior experience coming at AFC Wimbledon shortly after the Dons were promoted back to the EFL.

He also made 86 league appearances for Colchester United in the 2014/15 and 2015/16 seasons, scoring an impressive 20 goals across those years. That earned him the move to the second tier with Barnsley.

Now Moncur arrives at Roots Hall, wearing shirt number 20, determined to do the same in the National League.

Head Coach Kevin Maher says Moncur will be a great fit. “When we heard that it might be possible, it was something that we wanted to do.

“He’s got loads of experience in the leagues above and he’s the type of player that I feel like we need. I’m sure he’ll fit in really well with the lads.

“We want to get the best out of him and he’ll get the best out of us as well I’m sure. Having someone with the knowledge and nous he’s got is something that we wanted to add. He knows the game inside out and he’ll bring another dimension to us.”

The midfielder is available for this evening's home game against Boston United. Welcome, George!

Super Kev is like the cat that got the cream!!

Gubbins, Walker and now Moncur, impressive COSU, and well done for being patient and waiting for the players that the football department want. These 3 must be plan A’s or B’s. Wind seems to be a project as well.

Now, it's patience until we get the striker we need.

Considering all the off-field stuff as well, impressive transfer window SO FAR.

From the pictures, he certainly doesn't look "Two stone overweight" etc which some O's fans were claiming.

Hopefully he's kept himself fit and can slot straight in. Could be our midfield maestro if he is on it.

Pre-emptive never fall in love with a loan player!
I agree in principal (and I'm sure you're being slightly tongue-in-cheek), but I always think a season long loan is slightly different. We've had permanent signings that have been here for less time. Welcome George!

Interesting question as we’ve two creative midfielders I suspect neither of whom are fit enough right now to play 90 minutes. Do we start Moncur tonight and bring on Noor when he fades or start Noor and bring on Moncur? Maybe they can each do 45 minutes.
To think wasn't that long ago we was wondering at what point the 1 substitute on the bench would come on. Now we are starting to have competition for places.

What a great time to be a shrimper
