Gary McAllister

We took 2k but thats not the point. We have sold out nearly every away game since we have the premiership. We have of the highest home gates in UK still to this day despite prices and Bates etc.

My point was that we have a fan base that travels in huge numbers usually in good spirits and voice EVERY week. We get abused, shunted and herded. We get very few kick-offs at 3 on a saturday yet people still do it. Its to them that i take my hat off to.

See that's the problem. It's time to lose that hat mate!

What a knob...reckons other teams playing leads treat it as a cup final.

Living in the past....Leeds were a big club once, now a L1 club like the rest of us.

I hate Leeds scum, and his comments sum it all up!!

Leeds may not be that good a team any more, but they are still a big club.

McAllister's views are borne out by all the occasional fans who turned up last night in the Southend end (and great to see them there might I add) and the thousands of away supporters who made the trip.

And dare I say the players seemed a little more pumped up than they have been for other games this season...

I don't see how he can complain.
On the minus side it's going to be hard as smaller clubs will raise their game, but on the plus side Leeds will have a more massive advantage of spending more on players and being able pay a bigger salary, and when a sought after player is given a choice of club's he will usually choose a bigger one over one like Southend.
And then there is also being roared on by over 20'000 to 30,000 at home.

So it's clubs like Southend that have to play and trade under a big disadvantage.

Not sure he can be too criticised for these comments. The attendance, effort and general attention to Leeds seems to back up what he says. They are a big pull to some who remember the 70's, 92 team or 2000 team.

I can't be bothered to look up the stats but I wouldnt be surprised if their visits add on 500-1000 onto teams' average attendances.

Leeds United have played seven away games in the league so far this season. Every single one of those matches has brought about the highest attendance for the home team so far this season.

Working out how many are added to average attendances would have taken far too much effort, so what I've done is to look at how many more people were in attendance at the Leeds games than for the second-highest home league attendance for each club so far:

Scunthorpe 2,645
Yeovil 832
Swindon 5,026
Carlisle 5,229
Peterborough 6,127
Millwall 3,170
Southend 871

The second-highest attendance for both Yeovil and us were for games against local rivals (Bristol Rovers and Leyton Orient).

I think it would be fair to say that despite their large travelling support, Leeds do still manage to draw in considerable numbers of home fans wherever they go. I guess this is what Gary McAllister was trying to allude to.

But, hand on heart, purely based on the result and putting performances aside, have you derived more pleasure from the fact we beat Leeds than Hereford / Swindon? Did the Leeds fixture stand out above other fixtures such as Scunthorpe, Oldham Huddersfield at home? I suspect for a number of people the answer would be yes (even if only slightly....) and therefore McAllister was right in what he was saying.

Nope, 3 points is 3 points nearer promotion/avoiding relegation

Great work and a great point mate. I'll repeat myself i don't think he meant it as any kind of slight against any club in league 1.

Leeds are no differnet to Forest, Leicester etc....

All the sides that have once had some history think they have some god given right to be promoted out of this league. If football was based on support and past glories then Leeds would be a premier side. Sadly for Gary Mac etc is based on ability.

There supprt is good but then when you consider they are probably Englands 5th/6ht largest city and a one football team town then so it should be.

People seem to be missing the actual point that Gary MacAllister is trying to make. He says that they "can’t hide behind teams treating games against (Leeds) like a cup final". He's not suggesting that Leeds should be sweeping all and sundry aside, he's pointing out that other Clubs will naturally raise their game for Leeds and that it's up to him and his players to raise their game accordingly. It was a criticism of his players rather than our Club.

He was quite complementary about us in his after match interviews as well.

Does anyone here sit next to the away dugout? When Federici handed over the lighter thrown at him to the ref, a few people shouted at McAllister and he turned round to say something to them. Just wondered what he actually said?

Fair point Dave, but don't forget t' rugby league team. Super League champions two years in a row and they get average gates of about 16,000, much of which is during the football season.

Personally think its great for the league when big teams like leeds and the like are in our division. Its a great buzz to test ourselves against a team with the kind of resources that leeds have.

Fantastic support from leeds supporters last night (well in numbers anyway) and i might add that our support was great.

Yes last night may have been our highest gate of the season (maybe saturday) but we are averaging around 8k this season so given the fact that leeds bought around 2000 and the average away gate is probably 3-500 i would hazzard a guess that there was only maybe 500 extra home fans.

Leeds with there support and resources should not be in this division , but whilst they are there big time attitude will only serve to make us want to kick them while there down and i for one loved it.

We all know hand on heart that leeds will not be league one for to long so whilst they are we should all lap up the gate receipts and enjoy any points we take off them.

If he is suggesting that teams raise their games as they view playing Leeds as being in a cup final, then he is putting his club on a pedestal and mocking other teams as lower/inferior!

oooh, we are playing the Mighty Leeds, what a treat, it's our cup final!!

Playing Devils Advocate here I don't really see any difference in what McAllister has said as to what Tilly has supposedly said to anger our inbred neighbours from up the A12.

And to be fair and has already been stated clubs will appear to be more "up" for their games against Leeds. I like Gary McAllister I think he is a decent bloke and will be a good manager for Leeds, they are certainly a top 6 club, and easily the best side to have visited Roots Hall this season.

But why should players raise their game...If they can play that good, they should bloody well play that good every week!!

You obviously forgot about one of the worst performances in years against Bristol Rovers at the weekend.

With all due respect mate, you should change your name. Webby had a brain & you probably haven't as you've spouted a load of biased bollocks on this thread so far.

I think the stat that Hell & Back may not have mentioned is that all but one team had their highest attendance against Leeds last season. Also, cast your memory back to the pages given up on SZ to Leeds subjects last season e.g. 15 points deductions, promotion, play-offs etc. How many clubs can "attract" that kind of reaction? I include the Premiershite in that too.

Leeds are where they are for a reason we all know, they lost too many games & got relegated, just like we did. Leeds will go up eventually, probably this season, but on last nights showing, only if they get at least one decent wide player! After that, who knows. I guess they will go back up to the Prem, but only as a Bolton/Blackburn type club.

No he's not mocking other teams as inferior. Its like Telford raising their game against us next week. Its their Cup Final. Its the game that will attract more fans than any other game. As I said earlier, most teams will have their highest crowd against Leeds.

Also, ask any NON-diehard fan & most will say the Leeds game is a bigger game than the Col Ewe game. Think logically, until recently we were rarely played Col Ewe, this season they're low down in the League, Leeds were 2nd & USED to be a big club. They also have a reputation for playing excellent passing football, even if it had no end product last night :)!!
