I remember that game well, it was my first trip to Exeter. They were struggling at the time and when we managed to get a draw, a number of their supporters WALKED to Roots Hall to raise cash for the club. I believe that the team had to travel in a fleet of cars to Southend as Exeter had not paid their coach company. The one thing that I do regret was they were collecting bottle tops to save the club (it was in the days when you got money back for empty bottles etc.) We gathered quite a few together and before we got on the coach home, in full view of the Exeter fans we tipped them down the nearby drain!!!! I feel ashamed now but I was young then (13) and knew no better!

Whatever happened to Paul Pacey, I remember picking him up in my old car from Pentland Ave Shoebury once and then he dis-appeared from the scene?

Yes, I was there. We went down by train I seem to remember - a family day out! I remember chatting to some nice, young men on the train behind my dad's back! Don't remember much about the game though tbh, priorities were a little different then!

I love reading stories like these ... i've often thought about writing-up one of my lots days out ... but then again i forget everything after 30 minutes .. quite how BBBL can recall this after 30 years is staggering to me !!!

I could write a book of games i recall in detail from 1968. However the other half gives me grief because she reckons i forget things which she told mr half hour ago!!!.

As Glasgow just said .. i know for a fact that SP would be more than interested in helping you get this idea off the ground .. they have a profile set up on here, so you could PM Dave, or just send me an email and i'll pass it on

As for the second bit ?? thats called selective memory, and there aint anything wrong in that !!!!

Think you are getting some of facts mixed up with the Newport game in the 2nd round. I recall they had several fans who spent over a week walking here from south wales with buckets collecting loose change. If you think about it as the exeter replay was only 2 days after we played there, any fans who decided to walk would have probably not got as far as weston super mare in 2 days!.

I think it would be a great idea if somebody could co-ordinate a book of memories of our time at Roots Hall to be published around the time of the last game. Both a combination of rare photos and articles about great games, memories, things like that.

I know Man City & Arsenal did a similar kind of thing around the time they both moved grounds.
