SUFC: The Future The regeneration of Roots Hall

Our hopes and visions for the rebirth of Southend United, plus any plans published by the consortium for discussion
I'd urge people to remember the position we're in. Nobody with access to the kind of money required to put cantilevered roofs and Lord knows what else in at Roots Hall is going to be interested in this football club at the moment. The club has to live within its means and will have a small budget for this - no difference to many other clubs at this level and the level above.

Beggars can't be choosers. Let's just try to be happy that somebody wants to keep us at our spiritual home and make some immediate and future-proofing improvements to it.

Obviously some character might be lost, but character is only charming if it's not an unseemly health hazard. Character isn't going to win over the next generation of football fan in the local area and keep them out of the clutches of the London clubs. What will win them over (apart from a decent product) is clean, safe, comfortable stands with decent rake, sight lines and ancillary facilities. Nobody is really going to give much of a **** if there are a few beams or if it looks a bit "basic". Whichever way you cut it though, the appearance and state of Roots Hall does actively keep people in the town away, and many of them go up to London for their football instead.

We have an industry professional who is a fan, offering some great options and insight with actual knowledge and expertise. We'll be in good hands if Sherif and his company get offered the job, no matter how modest the budget.

This is absolutely spot on. Although I am massively happy we are to stay on the Roots Hall site, the current stands are simply not fit for purpose in the 21st Century. Am sure there are many people put off by the current state of the offering - clean, safe and comfortable are the buzzwords here and can't put the above message any better.

Chapeau, sir.

True but character and atmosphere must not be lost in search of the above.

6k at roots hall in full song is often louder than 10k+ at a bigger bowl like stadium.

Would we get away with the height increase, given the proximity of residential properties on Fairfax? Ditto if we reprofiled the West?
Height would be a restricting factor given potential issues with rights of light for the newly developed flats in particular. Wouldn't need to be a massive increase over the current though.

A silly question but would they still be looking to advertise at the roof line of the stadium? I think that part of the reluctance of wanting these new stands is because the photos are taken when the stands are empty, its like viewing an empty house in comparison to one that's furnished, it makes all the difference.

You take that relatively basic looking Bristol Rovers stand, stick it in Roots Hall with some advertising and maybe a score board at the top with fans filling it and I think it would look far different to what it does in the new photos that have been shared. Can't be worse than a falling down stand full of asbestos that no one is allowed to sit in!
